Painting 15-22
I dont know if this has been discussed before, but I have a few questions about painting the 15-22.
Is there a specific spray paint that needs to be used? Does it cause deterioration?
Would I have to add a "texture" to the rifle to get the paint to adhere correctly? Does the painting create a different texture to the rifle after it cures/sets?
For the people that have done this, what kind of precautions need to be taken while doing this to not ruin the rifle? What specific brands were used? What type of finish ,if used at all, did you use?
This isn't something I need to do, but I am interested in the information because I think if done right, it will set my rifle apart from some of the other ones I have seen.
I also would have figured that this practice might not be recommended, but I have not seen anyone correct those who have painted their rifle.

Paints like duracoat are tough as nails, but are expensive and permanent. I recommend Krylon's Fusion paint. It is made to adhere well to plastic, is easy to find and relatively cheap. It is also easier to remove if you decide you don't want your gun this that or the other color anymore. It will also wear more than the gun paints and create interesting wear patterns.

i prepared my surfaces by wiping them down with a VERY lightly wetted rag and come Acetone...then used some very fine grit sandpaper to rough them up...wiped again with Acetone...let dry overnight and painted allowing 45 min of dry time between coats and a minimum of 3 coats on mags
I used the Krylon Flat paint with little issues--when it wears simply respray

Just a little word of advice on the painting of your firearms.
If you use Krylon, keep in mind that it will only hold up to about 120 degrees F. So, if you will be shooting a lot of rounds through your rifle at one time, don't be shocked if it starts to melt away. I used the Krylon Camo spray paint on my .30-06 hunting rifle, but I won't be shooting several rounds through it at once.
The Duracoat is the way to go if you want a durable finish that will stand up to the heat of hundreds of rounds at a time.
I hope this helps.

I used the krylon light tan to paint my 12g, I did the whole thing, it has held up fine to be shot alot and at high rates of speed. no melting to report. i used soem rustoleum for the 15-22 and its been holding up great after 2 years of use i guess

I really like that pattern on the .30-06! I've never been big on the digital camo, but the .40 looks good too.

Thanks Unit505. I'm not a real big fan of digi either, but i thought it would look good and I'd never painted digi, so I gave it a try. I use duracoat for my customers though. IMO it is more reliable and even easier to use than a spray can.

After a couple days of research, I think I am gonna bite the bullet and do the duracoat. I don't know if I will use their stencils, but I am all in for the paint.

Duracoat is more expensive, but it is also made for firearms and will last longer. So, I think you made the right choice. Good luck and post pics when your done.

Had a guy thread the barrel ½ x28. nice part is the dye goes right on. No need to had the barrel turned down on a lathe, just thread
That can is fake. Waiting on paper work for the real deal, and it won't be painted
