I mounted the Primary Arms M3 to my son's stock model 15-22 last night. This version of the 15-22 does not have the folding sights. I am leaning towards just removing the stock sights (front & rear) and running just the M3. I am not concerned about the batteries dying during the zombie attack as we just use this for plinking. I have read about cowitness but this seems to just confuse the sight picture a bit. What kind of set up do you use? Where specifically on the top rail is the proper placement for the M3? I'd love to get some feedback from folks who have tried it both ways and where they are mounting the M3 (or similar) red dot. Thanks

I mount mine on the most forward point of the upper receiver. If mounted on the hand guard, the point of impact can shift just from something like resting on a fence or using a bi-pod.

You could just get a rear folder. I like having the front post always there. I guess I'm just use to it with my AK though.

There is some debate on where to mount your red dot. The only answer that is never wrong - mount it where you want it. If it is comfortable and works for you, then it isn't wrong. I like mine right about where it is posted above.

As for co-witnessing, it is mostly so that if the red dot fails you can still aim at your target using your back up iron sights. This means that you are not supposed to use the iron sights while using the red dot, but rather look over the top of them (or flip them down if you can) in order to use the red dot. Looking through the irons and red dot seems redundant to me and quite confusing.

i took the irons off my 15-22. if the battery dies, ill just quit shooting. but on my go to AR i have a folding rear.

as for location i mount my red dots forward on the upper receiver. maybe a notch or so from the front. like what Gopher Slayer said.

As Glockeyed said, if your red dot stops, your ability to shoot is over. Understanding your not taking this weapon to battle, you still want to have fun shooting. So get a MBUS (any brand you can afford), install it, flip them down, if your Red Dot fails, you can keep on shooting.

One word on the cheaper Red Dots, they do tend to fail a lot. I've had very good luck with SightMark, Vortex and of course Aimpoint MLX series, but all others that I had failed on me at the range shooting them on AR15 5.56 cal. So good luck.

I agree with ragingyeti. Just make sure the you get maximum eye relief for your son sight picture. You may have to move the sight forwards or backwards. As for a rear sight get a MAGUL BUS (under $40). This rear sight folds out of the way when not needed. This is the sight S&W mounts on the 15-22 MOE.

my daughter is running the M-3 on her 15-22, and we're more than happy wiht it. We've gotten it up to the front of the upper, then behind it running one of P.A.'s magnifier on one of their swing-out mounts. Due to the space taken up, we've not re-mounted the factory irons or went with any BUS yet. we've not had an issue with battery life, but we check the switches religiously.

If pictures are worth worth a thousands words, that one with a hole in the Aimpoint, well it just says it all. Learn with iron sights first, have them as backup to your optics. If the Zombies do come true, you will want to be able to deal with them.. that includes Aliens, like in Battle LA.. You never know.....
