Default Gauging intrest for drop in ambi safety

I designed a drop in ambi safety selector for the 15-22 and had it 3d printed to see how well it will work. I received the prototypes today and mocked it up. It is designed to work with the Battle Arms Development ambi safety levers. The safety selectors look fairly rough do to the low resolution of the 3d printer used. The fit is a little tight but it functions like it should.

Let me know what you think.

Hey "That Guy", good job, hats off.. I'm a righty so no need for me but it looks good enough to install. Great job... I would do the ambi if I were back in training, so I can let a righty or lefty use my weapon and take advantage of the ambi. For my own weapons, they are for me, a righty, therefore I don't plan on going the over side... but that's just me..

I thought that standard AR ambi safety drop ins work in the 15-22?

Thanks for the reply's everyone.

The 15-22 lower receiver is wider than the AR15 lower receiver so this prevents you from installing the AR15 ambi safety.

Install is simple, you rotate the old lever between safe and fire, pop it out. Install the new center into the receiver then bolt on the end plates.

Brett248Vista is right on how to do this with your regular safety selector and the ambi safety selector I have made.

Just in case anyone is not familiar with how to swap their safety selector around here is a quick how to.

I only have a cell phone and trying to do a video would be frustrating, so here is a quick run down with pics.

Step 1
Rotate the safety selector where it is between safe and fire.

Step 2
Use a punch or something similar with a flat bottom, such as a hex key, to push the safety selector out.

Step 3
You will insert the factory safety selector with the lever to the desired side of the receiver as it will have a groove for the detent to ride in on both sides of the selector.

My safety selector detent groove is located only on one side and must be installed with the detent groove on the right side of the receiver to match up with the detent. Install the lever on the right side before inserting the selector.

Now it may be tough to push the safety selector in past the detent, you can either use a small flat screw driver to push it down or loosen the handle via the screw in the bottom of the grip.

Step 4
Install the lever on the left side of the selector and you're good to go.

I will be shopping around with some local CNC shops to have this made. I plan on having it made from 6061 aluminum and hard coat anodized. As long as the price is reasonable I will move forward with this. If you have any questions fire away.

ThatGuy,

I wouldn't rule out plastic either. Depends on price and quantity. Once a mold it made it may be cheaper to mold them. But if you can get enough orders it may be cost effective (and certainly nicer) to have it CNC'd in hard anodized T6.

I am so glad to see this finally happen, it's been a long time coming for the 15-22.

Great work!

I will keep it in mind. But I think the initial cost will make it not worth doing. I have a local shop that I am going to talk with and they also do injection molding. So I will see what they say. Thanks for the input.

The alloy route will certainly wear better than plastic. The stock safety selector gets pretty tore up by the metal detents. So far I've not had to replace my stock safety but if you look at the grooves they certainly do get worn from the detent. Alloy would be a great way to go, if the cost isn't nuts.

It's pretty easy to make your own using the existing safety as a base for the project.

Sure it isn't super hard for someone to sit down and file away at their factory part. But the idea of a "drop in" especially one that is CNC Machined out of hard anno'd T6 is a great idea!

I have one of the proto's and as soon as my Bad "***" levers get here I will be doing a full video review and high res photos

Thanks Jon!

Jon was kind enough to send me one of the prototypes to test fit and function. My Battle Arms Development Bad A** Levers came today so I took a few photos and shot an install video. Assembly was a piece of cake and the new unit performs flawlessly. Can't wait to see the final aluminum piece! I'm on the list!

Brett248Vista thanks for making a great video of installation and review of the prototype!

I am making a few changes to the design for ease of machining and updating the blueprints to send out for quoting. Hopefully I will have time to submit them tomorrow.

Still not sure on pricing yet and won't know until I submit the blueprints.

As far as shipping goes, I will ship these anywhere in the world.

If you have any questions let me know.

Thanks
Jon

*Waits in anticipation* You took the effort to make a drop in solution for the community, I commend you on your forethought and ingenuity!

Even the proto, works like a charm!

Not to put a damper on things, but isn't this a patent violation since Battle Arms Development has a patent pending and this thing is damn near exactly like it, right down to the diagonal grooves?

Jon is not making the "levers" he is making the selector, the piece between the levers, he just chose to use Battle Arms Development Levers.

Hey Jon,
I came over here and made an account JUST to talk about how bad *** this ambi-selector is! I saw Brett248Vista's video on Youtube and he pointed me in this direction. How can I get a prototype of this thing?

Hi Scoal Infidel, glad you joined us. I do not have anymore prototypes to send out. However I just finished submitting blueprints to a few local CNC shops. So hopefully after Thanksgiving I can get a production run going.

Good video brett, seems pretty easy to install. My safety got worn down and doesn't work anymore. I think the metal version would be nice. Btw off topic beautiful challenger. I have a black '70s one that I got restored.

.50,

Thanks, install is super easy even in the plastic prototype it went right in. A T6 piece will hold up forever, the plastic does get worn down, I believe the detent used in these, is standard AR15 fare, and as such is pretty "sharp" and cuts into the plastic over the long run.

We wouldn't have that issue with a T6 part!

Thanks for the kudo's on my baby! PM me with photos of your 70's I'd love to check it out!

I joined just to get in on this. I've already got levers, so shoot me an e-mail when you pin down the price. Thanks!

I just purchased a 15-22 and happened on this thread. I will definitely purchase one so that my new rifle can match its big brother!

You got some great videos on the 'tube! In fact, I was watching a review of your on the NCStar mark 3 that I actually found one on Craigslist for 85 bucks. I scooped it up on Tuesday afternoon and and (STILL) trying to get it sighted in correctly. It's shooting a bit left, any suggestions?
