After buying a new to me 15-22 and putting a free float handguard on it I decided I would give the old 15-22 a makeover. Previously it had XTM and ladder rail covers. No complaints with those just wanted to try something else. After checking out some of the great pics on this forum I had decided on trying the Larue index clips with handstop and had them in the basket on Larues site until it figured shipping at almost $20. I just couldn't justify $50+ for small parts just for a makeover. After a little searching I found some knock-offs for airsoft for $14 shipping included. They seem to fit fine with little to no movement. The only colors they had were black and FDE. I wanted OD Green because that's the color my son likes and the grip is that color. I dyed half of them with Dark Green Rit dye and they came pretty close to the Magpul OD. I also dyed some of the Magpul ladder covers. The rifle these are going on is with S&W for repair but I put them on my spare forearm just to see how they look. Pictures have the original Magpul covers on just for comparison. I won't know exactly how they'll be placed until I get my rifle back.



The handstop even says Larue.

I never would have thought the plastic would take a stain from the dye. Looks like it did, very nicely. It will be interesting to see how it holds up.

POU is philosophy of use. It basically means, what does it do.

Handstops are my preferred handguard attachment over vertical grips or AFGs. You can either use them to mark your hand placement so that you have the same grip on your rifle every time, or do what I do and use them on the 9 o'clock rail. This will enable you to use them to wrap your thumb over to help manage recoil. It provides a very steady and comfortable grip. The OP actually is using it both ways, which is quite nice.

This wasn't something I came up with. I had read about it other places on internet. I don't know how deep it penetrates but probably not that deep and scratches will probably show original color. I'm not worried about scratches showing through, that's what I call character.

As far as the handstops, I just thought they looked cool. There functionality will be for repeatable hand placement, as stated above by ragingyeti. This rifle is going to be set up for my son who is young. He doesn't neccessarily need the handstop's but I think they will have some usefulness. If not we'll pull them off.

I've used the Rit dye to color plastic parts on my 45 mph remote control 4wd truck. The dye actually goes in pretty good, small scratches won't show. You want the dye very hot, then let it soak until you get the desired color. Some of the blue parts in this pic were originally grey.

Does the original plastic need to be a lighter color or can you dye black into tan or something else light?

I don't think you'll be able to lighten a color. I started off with FDE. It doesn't take much dye and I had the water almost to the boiling point. I'm guessing 190-200 degrees.

It needs to be lighter. The dye just adds color, it can't remove it.
