Default Introduction

Hello to all! My name is Justin, but I go by my nickname more than my real name. My nickname is pappasmurf, but you guys can call me smurf for short.
I am NOT new to weapons, As I have a 9mm handgun and have already had a .22 caliber rifle, it was a GSG-522. I am now looking into getting the mp 15-22 as my new toy from taxes. I want it to resemble my M4 carbine from the military but would love to hear members suggestions for what to look for and stay away from.
From what I have read on this forum and what I can remember from falling in love with the 15-22 at the store was that it has the a2 flash hider and also I believe the barrel that resembles the barrel off an M16 a2.
I do plan on buying a threaded short barrel shroud and also a threaded long barrel fake suppressor. It just looks badass. Also I plan on getting some good optics (any suggestions welcome) along with a red dot sight for quicker acquisition. I would LOVE to have them coexist but not sure what works well with one another.

Well I am off to lurking in the shadows...lol

Welcome aboard the good ship M&P Tacticool 15/22, will post a picture when I get home.. You will love the M&P 15/22 since you can mimic your full size AR15, and save money on ammo while doing it.

tacticaledge,
Thank you for the welcome but didnt you mean; what color do smurfs turn when you choke em? My answer has always been Stainless steel silver! Cause thats exactly the last thing anyone trying to choke me will see. Now that I think about it, it might be the orange flash. LOL
I am already planning on dropping about 1000 to 1500 bucks into my new "toy."

Welcome aboard from St. Louis! I agree gentlemen, I too would not choke a smurf that was carrying a gun. Especially if it were a 15-22, I mean, I still wouldn't with something chrome and boomier but you know what I mean. I would how ever say to him, "Hey! I'll show you mine if you show me yours" keeping that in mind, "and not other more inappropriate things," post pics of your new baby/addiction, and that's a good idea by the way tact! As soon as I get my ejection port cover I'll show ya'll something real nice and fancy like! Maybe a special sneak preview if anyone is dying to see her, but again, welcome and get ready for a blast! Pun completely intended

Welcome and I too had hand guns and just recently purchased the 15-22.
I already have added a RDS, Scope, and Laser and find shooting it with each, iron sights, then RDS, take it off and put the scope on, then the laser, it is a different gun each time.
It gives me confidence each time to graduate to an AR in the future.

Welcome aboard!

Just one word of caution. The M&P 15-22 can lead to an intense desire to own a 5.56 M&P 15.

Thanks for all the welcomes. I have been scouring the pic threads and others and now have a dilemma along with some questions; The dilemma is, All of you already have a decked out mp15-22 and I DONT, you guys suck! LOL

Naw, seriously though my dilemma is that I dont know if I should get a 4-32 scope and mount a red dot on top of the scope for CQB (or Close Quarter Combat for those that didnt know) or just a red dot with a 3X magnifier. I want to be able to put some lead down range at 100 yards but at the same time feel comfortable at 12-50 yards with the red dot. I need HELP, I am shopping as IF I already have the weapon, lmao

The main question is the 15-22 I am looking at is the mp 15-22 A1 style with the fixed rear sight and front A2 post sight, would I have to worry about the blue spring problem or any other things I need to look for or avoid?

My personal opinion is that you dont need a magnified scope or a magnifier in order to get good hits at those distances. A non-magnified red dot should be sufficient.

Look at the PA micro dots, its a quality optic, 2 MOA dot, which is small enough to allow you to see targets out to 200 yards. I have no problem shooting a steel plate at 200 yards and getting hits repeatedly without magnification.

Bullitt,
thanks for your response. I am also looking for just a little advantage when I aim for the 300 yard mark. I am also looking at the PA icro dots as you suggested

You aren't going to hit anything at 300 yards with a .22. Max effective range is around 150 yards for most loads.

What's your MOS?

Yeah but the max effective range for the .50 cal is 1.1mile yet many soldiers have surpassed that mark and set records. I believe (last time I looked) the current record is held by a canadian soldier at 1.54 mile during "Enduring Freedom."

I was a 91W (combat medic) but switched to 19D half way through AIT. What you in Gordon for?

Tac,
As soon as I get it I will post pic of the build and also the "what use to be targets" in your thread. I was wondering if S&W actually know what they have done by manufacturing this weapon. I see that CCI has even made a special ammunition based on this particular rifle. I am actually reading http://www.cci-ammunition.com/produc...=1&loadNo=0953
