Default Hammer Pin Broke

After many thousands of rounds fired thru the FDE 15-22, I managed to shear the pin. I thought it was something more sinister when it wasnt firing. But I'm chalking it up to how many rounds I've put down range. Its gotta be around the 10k mark.

That's kind of weird. I'm not sure how much force is really put onto the hammer pin. At least they are cheap and easy to replace. If it happens again, you might have an underlying issue at hand.

Don't have mine in yet, but I have to ask,,, are the pins plastic or metal on the 15-22,,, if metal,, its a safe bet it was a bad pin,,, or the lower would show clear signs of ware where the pins resided

The pins are metal - standard .154 AR15 pins.

I'm way past 30,000 rounds by now. That sounds real odd that it broke, has to be defective. But as stated above at least it's a cheap fix

I shoot federal bulk 525. The pin sheared at its weakest point, the groove that is machined into it. Nothing is missing or misaligned, it just seems pointless to put a machined groove into the pin.

Just got done building my AR-15 and I planned on putting anti-rotating pin set into it, so the 15-22 will get the same treatment.

Don't remember having a groove on mine. Have to take it apart and check that out. Is there a radius at the bottom of the groove or is it flat milled.

Morning RedmistofIdaho

While I haven't broken the hammer pin on my S&W 15-22 (but it has a larger diameter .160" hammer pin I made from drill stock as the original .154" was a bit loose in the lower's pin holes).

I have broken 2 hammer pins in my RRA M-4 lower when used with my CMMG dedicated 22 upper. In talking to RRA they said that when their lower is used on a .22 upper that happens frequently. They seemed to break around the 8,000-10,000 round time period.

The groves are there for the primary reason that the trigger pin and hammer pin are identical and interchangeable. The center groove is there for an internal spring in the hammer to lock into, preventing the pin from coming out. The outer grooves are there for the legs of the hammer spring to lock into preventing the trigger pin from coming out.

Without the grooves, there's nothing to hold the pins in place.

Morning RedmistofIdaho

Make sure you check the length as those pins sit a bit recessed in the 15-22. Regular AR/M-4 anti rotation pins might be a bit short to work in the 15-22 chassis.

Anti-rotation pins are unnecessary. Just a way to take money from your wallet. Lubrication, on the other hand, is necessary.
