Default sightmark red dots

Looked this weekend at Academy sports at a sightmark reflex sight for 50.00. This for a M&P 15-22 for range play. Anybody have one,and how do youlike it?

I had one when I had my GSG-5. For the price you pay they are decent. I let it go with my GSG because I wasn't crazy about the amount of parallax. Never lost zero over the few hundred rounds I shot with it on the gun and leaving it on the gun in the range bag/transporting it. If you are still really new to shooting I would suggest you use your irons for a bit before moving on to any kind of optics.

The pic below? It's ok at an indoor range, but in direct sunlight the reticle fades out. I recently gave it away to a guy who thought he wanted one. My guess is that he'll give it back. I've been quite pleased with the Primary Arms MicroDot.

Not to hijack but this brings up a question that I've always had. A red dot similar to the PA Micro Dot vs. a reflex sight. Both are considered red dot sights right? Is it just user preference as to which route you go?

Hope Academy Sports has a good return policy. Bought the $100.00 model. Got it home and it want turn on at all. Put anew set of batteries in it and still a nogo we will see.It looks like it is built really good.

Technically, all are "red dot" and "reflex" sights. They are similar and work with the same technology.

For a crazy in depth description of red dots and the differences between them, look at this.

Not really. The red dot is emitted from the side of the sight closer to the shooter, making it a red dot.

The only true holographic sights are EOTechs (and possibly their clones).

ragingyeti knows what he is talking about. A lot of these cheaper manufacturers market them as holographic sights, but they are not. EOTech and some of the higher end clones are true holographic sights. The sights like the sightmark, aim sport, truglo, etc are "reflex" sights. "reflex sight" is short for reflector sight, the image is reflected back at the user.

My question is how much experience do you have shooting with the iron sights? IMHO I would learn to shoot tight groups with irons before moving on to optics of any kind. I only ask because I don't know what kind of experience you have shooting and typically it is newer shooters that lean more toward the budget brands when it comes to optics. I know because I was guilty of it when I started.

I agree about using irons. I have irons only on my 15-22 so that I can practice fundamentals regularly.

I have a Primary Arms Micro (Aimpoint T-1 clone) on my 5.56 and it has been simply fantastic. It is sub-$100 and it has been a workhorse for me. Any of the red dots from Primary Arms will be good.
