Really, i reload so i can reload a box of 45colts for about $8.00[not counting brass ] i shoot 4 times a week and i had my routine down to 100 rounds a week, also i would throw in some 44mag and some 45acp and some 357mag, well now i got back into my 15/22 and i cant stop, it seems like if i dont shoot a intire bulk pack of cci blazer i am not satisfied. Well at $15.00 a box [on sale at dunhams right now] its actually costing me more, but its worth it , pghrich

what is the secret to loading .45 for less than 3cents a round?
i love to shoot both, i just do not shoot the .45 as much, do to cost...

Actually thats .16 cents a round, thats using lead bullets at $40.00 per 500, primers at $28.00 per thousand and powder at $23.00 per pound, i use 6.2 grains of titegroup so a pound goes a long way, i also reuse my brass many times so that cost is not in the equation.But i only shoot 25 rounds at a time not 525, pghrich

You're comparing apples to oranges, err, rounds to boxes - which really isn't a fair comparison.

I have found that reloading doesn't save you any money, it just lets you shoot more.

Just be thankful you are not using expensive .22 ammunition, Eley Tenex is up to $190 a brick. That's 38 cents per round of .22 rimfire. I make my .38 wadcutters for under 7 cents a round. Which reminds me I need to get out to my bench and cast another 1000 bullets.

If you are paying $15/100 for .22s, you are either buying the wrong ammo or shopping at the wrong place, or both - at least if you are in the US.

And I have been loading .45 Colt for 30 plus years and it has been a LONG time since I could load for less than 15 cents a round.

another thing, i did the math, powder 6.2g titegroup=2.5cents,primer= 2.3cents, 200g lead cowboy bullet= 8cents total 12.8 cents per round less brass for 45 colt, pghrich

That you only shoot 25 rounds of .45 Colt but shoot a full box of .22s has no bearing upon the cost of shooting. If you want to put it in the actual perspective, only shoot 25 rounds of .22 and then count the cost.

I do understand the point you are trying to make, but your logic is faulty.

My 15-22 loves CCI Mini-Mags. I purchase a box of 100 for $13.97 at my local Walmart.

13.97 cents a round (we'll round that up to 14 cents). I don't have to take the time or effort to reload. I've never reloaded, but I imagine it takes a little bit of time and labor to do so. Time and labor are worth $$, so (for me) it's cost effective to walk into Walmart, swipe my debit card, and go shooting.

But, to each his own....... although I would like to start reloading 30-30's.

I get your point when you put it that way, but the point i am trying to make is for ME, i spend more money per day because i can't just shoot 100 rounds of 22 ammo but i CAN shoot only 25 rounds of 45 colt, plus going thru 525 rounds of 22 ammo with our m&p 15/22's isn't all that difficult, pghrich

Mini mags can be found for less then $7 per 100…. 14 cents a round for .22 is way too much IMO. Most of the stuff I buy is 4-5 cents each, and just as much fun. And you cant reload .22 rimfire anyways.

Only take 100 rounds of .22 with you to the range. Problem solved.

Mini Mag CCI is $10 per box in Alaska when you can find them and Federal bulk pack (550)b about $21 and some change. Shipping I suppose.

There was a time, not too long ago, when handloading a decent 38 SP was about as cheap as buying higher quality 22 ammo. Boy, those were the days!

But I get what you mean...you can still have a lot of fun with 22LR and it is not too expensive doing so. I'm recently getting the 525 Bulk Pack Remington Golden Bullets for $16.99 locally. They are proving to be one of the more accurate cartridges in my friend's new Ruger MKIII standard pistol, she enjoys shooting them (lots of them!) and they have been reliable for feeding and ejection too. The last 2 boxes have had no mis-fires!! I intend to get some more from that lot, maybe a whole case. At that price, and especially with that kind of performance, I figure they must be factory seconds.

my goodness .... even at the range I shoot at they only charge 8.95 per 100! They range from 6.49 - 7.19 per 100 everywhere else here in Va. Is ammo that much more expensive in Fl?

I think you need to look for a new supplier of ammo. $14/100 is pretty much double what most places charge for it, unless you are talking CCI Stingers or match ammo. For MiniMags, that's way over priced. Cabela's sells the stuff for $38/500.

Yeah, I agree! I haven't bought mini mags in a long time because CCI Blazer is constantly on sale for me but I'd pay $8 for 100. Your getting screwed over by Walmart haha IF these are in fact "mini-mags".

32 long with my own cast bullets & 2.5 gr Red Dot run me around $4.00 @ 100. That is with lead costs of $1.00 a lb replacement. If I go with actual of 10 cents, powder from a 8 lb jug, primers in lots of 10K I can get costs well under $3 @100.

I get Federal 525 copper plated hollow point 22lr bulk packs for $ 14.50 a case which equals a little over 2 and half cents a round. I have never shot a 22 that does not like Federal CPHP ammo.

Wally world sells em for 19.98 for 550 rounds... at 0.0825% sales tax thats 21.63 (rounded from 21.628) / by 550 3.9 cents a round base price. however on sale you can get same ammount in rimmington last saturday for 17 something. i mean you can reload .223 for 5 cents a round - brass my friend does it all the time but for a non reloader .22 is where its at for high valume shooting. if you didnt want to shoot in high valume you would keep shooting that .45 i have a 1911 .45 its nice, but i shoot my .22 every week and i just carry the .45 when i have need to.

Sorry guys i forgot to mention that you need a coupon that you can get on line, just google it, sale last until 5/12, if supplies last, i too have a colt 1911, and its a ball to shoot, but even if i had the ammo i physically could not shoot 500 rounds in one sitting, pghrich

Wally charges us $24.95 per box of 525 Federal 22's plus tax here in Canada. Thats about the cheapest we can get them anywhere up here. Most gunshops are well over $32.00 at least for the same box. They probably buy them from Wally and then gouge us.

CCI Standard Velocity .22LR in a brick of 500 is around $30. around my neck o' the woods. That satisfies my need for quality ammo. I could not justify shooting anything like Eley Tenex for the informal type of shooting that I do. I don't understand how the OP can reload .45ACP so cheaply, either...

Hello one eye joe, i see you are Army, thank you for your service to our country, i think i explained my cost for reloading 45colt very clearly in post #9, unless i did the math wrong i can and do reload 45 colt and 45acp for less than 16 cents a round actually it is closer to 13 cents [less brass], pghrich

Um...I'd like to know how that math works? Heck, primers alone cost $0.03 a piece. How do you come up with bullets, powder and cases for $0.02 per round. I don't know what the cheapest you can load 223s is, but no way is it anywhere near $0.05 per round.

I agree a nickel a round is kinda hard to swallow, but most reloaders already have a large supply of fired cases, so those don't normally figure into the cost.

Yeah, even assuming the brass is free. About the cheapest I think I could do is about $0.20/round.

Most of my pistol reloading costs me 15 cents or less because I buy bullets in 500 or 1,000 round lots. Even .223 is no more than 20 cents. Of course, none of this counts time, but that relaxation time anyway.

Larger rifle cartridges are another matter, obviously.

45 colt with a 255 grain bullet, cast my own -
store bought alloy $1.50/lb = 5.5 cents
Primers = 3.0 cents
Unique 8 grains = 1.3 cents (I buy 8#, $12/lb)
Starlight brass, inc shipping 9 cents, I reuse it a least 9 times = 1 cent
total cost 255 gn 45 colt is 11 cents.

Am I missing something? Since I often get lead and brass for free my costs are even less. Plus brass lasts forever.

I bought 10,000 rounds of CCI mini-mags about 6-7 years ago on sale for under $3.50 / 100. By the time I need to order more, it may well cost $15/100.

Good trick since just the projectiles (bullets) cost 8¢ each in quantities of 1000...

I love CCI mini mags also. I pay $6.49 + tax per 100.
Midway has on sale right now for $28.79 + S&H per 500.
Yesterday I bought three 50 round boxes of CCI Velocitors, for $4.49 ea. + tax. Shop around some. IMHO $14 is way to much.
