you will need a hand guard adapter and then u can use any AR-15 hand guard you want but in doing this u will most likely gain in weight where u save in bulk

adapter

Here is the one you want:
NC Small Diameter Hand Guard for NC22 and AR22

At 1.62" in diamater and 12" long approximately it is about as small as you can get based on the size of the factory barrel and the fact it has to be able to fit an AR handguard nut. Actually made for them by JP I think. Has its own 2.875" modular rails you can fit to it if you want. I use it bare on my AR15-22 PC I use for speed steel competition.

You will need one of the tools to remove the factory handguard plus the alloy vise jaws if you are smart. And if you buy this one I suggest you also buy the Nordic wrench they have for it also. That makes it easy to index it if you want to put any rails on it. If not you can just screw it on and forget about it. I got it and one of the little rails so I could mount a bipod or an offset pair of iron sights if I needed them. The rails have the extra height in them so if you mount them on top they will match the factory upper rails on the receiver.
And yes it adds some weight in the front but it actually transistions faster in speed competition because you can use your off hand farther down on the end than you can with the factory quad rail giving you better leverage. Makes it very much like my 3-gun AR now, except smaller in diameter.

Yeah but the Samson and Troy handguards are around $200 while the Nordic/JP is like $60 and the Nordic is smaller in diameter since it is not designed to have a gas line under it because it is designed for a rimfire AR.

the savings in the nordic is the top rail is separate. length for length, with rail the nordic is only $20-30 cheaper.

Loveee my Troy TRX Extreme. Got a good price on it during black friday but that's going on my AR-15 build. I don't mess with my 15-22, it's been stock for the year and 4-5 months that I've had it aside from some rail covers.

Everyone who has decided to change the handguard has likely done it for different rerasons. I just did not like the quad rails even with Ergo rails covers and hand stops installed. I wanted a smooth one that would be much better for the kind of speed competition I do. Looked at various Hogue ones, metal and rubber coated. Then I looked at a few of the new factory made 3-gun ARs like the Stag 3G and such using modular handguards. Then I saw a pic of the Nordic NC22 rifle and realized that was the handguard I needed. Made by JP and a smaller clone of the regular 2" modular handguard. Has the same hole spacing but if you elect to put those rails on they won't be tall enough to match the upper receiver. They only have the short rails for the 1.62" HG that are the correct height.

you know, the handguard on the gun is already a sleek 1 5/8" diameter like the nordics, it's just all covered up in bulky rails that you can't cut off. too bad

S&W should offer other handguards. A standard(Think M&P 15 sport), MOE(since they already have an MOE setup) and maybe one of those free float round ones that I see on hunting ar's(That would have been appropriate for the performance center) just to name a few.

Yeah I know, but you still have to grab a lot of real estate to grab the end of the handguard.

Shot our postponed Speed Steel match on Saturday. I was shooting 1.7s runs on the fastest stage with my open rimfire pistol. But got down into the 1.5s area with the AR15-22. That new Geissele Super 3-Gun trigger had no lock up issues like the old RRA 2-Stage that was in previously. Also the heavier Nordic handguard was no issue either. On the stage with the widest target separation (20 yards) I managed to rip off a 1.98s 5th run.

Just to make sure.....the Nordic handguard has the same threads as a standard AR-15 upper receiver so the Nordic threads right onto one of the 15-22 barrel nut adapters?

I have an AR-15 with a TRX Extreme and really like it. The Nordic seems like a nice, similar handguard for my 15-22 for a reasonable price. Running a 3-dot only so don't need any rails on it.

Thanks.

S&W should really start on rolling out different handguards, magazines and barrels right about now. The rifle has been out long enough for them to know that it's really, really popular and they should capitalize on that.

No one knows how to mount a Nordic on a 15-22?

Found it:

This Hand Guard was designed for AR15 uppers with blow back actions such as 22LR, 22WMR, 9mm, etc. and will thread onto any standard AR15 upper, as well as the Ruger SR22 Stock and Nordic AR22 stock for the 10/22

Yeah I hate quad rails also. I second the Samson Evo.. just get the thread adapter.. then all you need is the normal ar barrel nut. The evo is modular and uses the factory barrel nut.. just clamp it on. It comes with two short and one long rail.. I only used the short one. (for bipod) I'm also surprised on how light the rail is. Here's a pic of the one on my M&P.. I plan on doing the same on the 15-22 once fundage allows.

that's it. You just have to follow directions on getting the 15-22 barrel nut and handguard off, then putting it back together without the handguard and then adding the adapter onto the barrel nut. the threads on the outside of that will take care of any handguard that has it's own mounting nut. When you see a handguard that says "2 piece" it means the handguard tube and its nut that screws on the adapter. Most handguards use this method except for Troy and Samson that I know off. For those you also need a real AR barrel nut to put on the adapter because they use the notches in the barrel nut where the AR gas tube goes thru to line their tube straight. It might sound complicated but once you get all the parts in front of you and take the 15-22 barrel nut off it looks pretty easy.

Mmmm.....Evo

Nice rifle.

I can't wait to see what a Rainier Arms Evo will look like on the 15-22. Every time I get motivated to finally do it, they're out of stock.
I think I'm going to get the new 15" evo for my AR(room for a bipod in front of the AFG2), and put the 12" I already have on my 15-22.

Default 1522 factory handguard

Is anyone willing to sell their factory hand-guard after they have upgraded their 1522 with a different one?

For those who are looking for a smaller handguard for the purposes of grip, I'm curious if they have tried an AFG?

I did and I liked the stock handguard much better with the AFG added.

I added an AFG. With it set as far forward as possible (hanging off the forend, crossbolt in the last picatinny notch) it's the length of a 12" forend. DPMS has a CF forend that's reasonable but I'm not sure it will do anything more than the forward mounted AFG.

I too am looking for a smaller diameter hand gaurd.

I've pretty much decided on the Madbull licensed Noveske NSR.

Here is the thread about the install on the 15-22.

The Nordic handguard is a completely round tube, and as such, does not line up with the upper receiver's top rail. I don't see how you would mount a front sight on the handguard if you wanted to.

The Noveske NSR and Midwest Industries Gen2SS are even smaller (side to side) than the Nordic Components handguard. The Nordic is 1 5/8" which is 1.625". The Noveske NSR is 1.4" side to side diameter and the Midwest Industries Gen2SS is 1.5" side to side. Both the Noveske and Midwest have top rails that line up with the upper receiver, so if you place a front sight on the rail it will line up with a rear sight on the receiver.

The best part of the Noveske is that it's available as a licensed copy for airsoft and is only around $100 for the 13".
