Greetings from San Antonio, TX. I am a new gun owner and really have no clue what I am doing. Ok, disclosure is done.

I was at a range today, saw the 15-22 and realized I had to have one. This will be my first rifle and I really am just loking for something that is fun & reasonable to shoot that looks great. I read up on the internet and decided that I wanted the MOE 15-22. After trekking around to most of the LGS, which had none, I finally gave up.

So, I am rifleless. I will be poking around the forums here trying to learn everything I can. It seems there is a Saxet show Sept 1 and another gun show of sorts the following weekend. What are the odds they would have what I am looking for? I am not really familiar with the colors, and I saw the tan one but black would work too.

Alex

welcome! i got my 15-22 a couple months back and i dont regret it one bit. you should call shooters here in jacksonville about the moe's, they usually have some in stock and their prices are great. you'd just have to pay a little extra for the transfer fee at your local gun shop.

Welcome, I am not sure where you are, but if you have a Sportsman's Warehouse around you I would check there. The one by me has at least the FDE Moe in stock, not sure about the Black.

15/22 are like a drug once bitten you can't get enough. I said I'd never own one, then shot a member here's one. I spent the next week looking for one of my own. Still waiting for paperwork to clear!

You'll love the 15-22. It's a lot of fun and cheap to shoot. I also recommend a gun safety course. There are a lot of little things that will seem like common sense that you otherwise might not consider. I see a lot of guys learn the hard way at the range the first time they accidentally muzzle sweep someone. Better to learn up front. Have fun and post pics once you decide on what to get!

Hi, Should be able to locate one somewhere in Texas I would think then You can avoid the FFL transfer fee if it needs to be shipped as it would still be a interstate purchase. Your Local Gun Store ( often abreviated as LGS on the net ) should be able to find You one. Go online and research the Rifle You intend to purchase and take that information to the LGS and see what they can do. Also not having a clue about firearms or any knowledge of brands, accessories and such will ( as We all know ) cost You dearly over the years. What gun enthusiast doesn't have a box filled with " what could have been , why did I buy this, this won't work for Me " gun items. But not having Gun safety knowledge will kill You so the best advice You could get from this forum would be a firearm safety course. good luck .....WVleo

Welcome to the forum.

I added a 15-22 to my small collection some months ago and it's one of my favorites now.

I wouldn't get too hung up on finding an MOE version to the exclusion of the other models - you can customize the rifle in an almost infinite number of ways - many pieces for AR15s fit this gun.

When you do find one you like, I recommend

- buy at least one extra magazine
- ask your gun dealer to recommend a cleaning kit and supplies you'll need
- read the manual that comes with the rifle...it has some great info
- field strip and clean the rifle before you shoot it - as recommended in the users manual

When you do go to the range or some place to shoot takes lots of ammo, these things are fun...enjoy.

the good thing about the moe is a lot of people end up adding magpul furniture so you actually save $ buying it already on there. just do some research to make sure that is what you want.

I bought my 15-22 MOE late last year. It is a lot of fun for just general plinking and shooting. It is not as accurate as my Savage II TR or CZ 452 Ultra Lux but they are bolt action rifles.
As far as the MOE version, I like the flip-up Magpul sights - they are nice sights. I also use an inexpensive Simmons 2-9x scope with a detachable mount so I can pop the scope off and flip the iron sights up when I want to.
I didn't like the handgrip from MOE as well as the Hogue that I have on a Stag 5.56mm AR, so I changed that out.
I can highly recommend the 15-22 and if you want some decent iron sights the MOE version is worth the extra money.

Oh yes - I can shoot sub-sonic ammo with it and it reliably cycles the action. I shoot by my house and the sub-sonic is much quieter without the "crack". CCI sub works fine as well as Wolf MT sub-sonic. This would only be a plus if you desire quieter shooting at times.

Welcome Alex, I have the MOE and love it so if you prefer the MagPul add-ons I would hold out and locate one. The options are black or FDE (flat dark earth = tan), you may be able to find them at a local gun store or can buy online and save the tax! If you don't mind a drive, there's a gun store near Brenham, TX called Independence Firearms (Welcome to Independence Firearms or Welcome to Independence Firearms) that almost always have some in stock, but call and check.

If you work out the price difference with the MOE version and putting the MOE gear on yourself, you come out WAY ahead by buying the MOE version up front. Like almost $100 ahead.

I just saw a basic at wal mart in boerne for $447. I was tempted but I think I want the accessories. It also didn't have the flash deal on the barrel which made it look pretty bare next to all of the other AR15 they had there.

at a very minimum id get one with a threaded barrel. makes it easier to put shrouds or suppressors on later down the road.

My Stag is the Model One. Fairly accurate for a 16" barrel and a twist that really doesn't' support heavy bullets. It does fine with 62gr out to 600 yards.
The quality of the Stag rifles is very good. I have seen and handled quite a few.

Greetings from N Florida or as some say L.A. (lower Alabama). Not sure about the MOEs but seems a bit high. I got a camo from LGS for $459. Whatever one you end up with get at least one (three would be better) 10 round short mag for bench and prone shooting.

I think that is an okay price for a MOE. I think MOEs average about $100 more than a standard version.

Dave-WV, thanks for the reply. I should have known this was going to happen. Got the 15-22 and now I really want a Big Brother and have no desire to shoot my SKS anymore.

After looking around I think I have decided on the black MOE. There is a gun show next weekend and I plan to attend. Anything I need to be aware of? I purchased my XDM from my gun shop, so I am rather inexperienced.

That's what I got, as well. Just determine what you're willing to pay, after checking around other places first. I've not seen many gun show sales on new guns that are decent prices, so if you know what you should pay, you might get them down a bit. For reference, our local Sportsman's Warehouse wants $559, but the local Lawmen's charges only $474, /when/ they're in stock. I paid $479 for mine.

You might do well, or even better, on accessories, mags and ammo, so just price out what you want, and go with lots of money.

The last thing I need is yet another 15-22 but the green one screams "BUY ME!!!!!!!" Good thing I have at least a modicum of will-power...

You'll love it. Like the other posters have stated, get at least 1 additional mags, preferably more. The 32 rounders run flawlessly for me.

Welcome to the forum!

What about a flash suppressor? I am talking about the thing on the front. Can it be added and is it even necessary?

Not needed on a 16" .22.

Pretty much all the powder wil burn in those 16 inches. That's what .22 does. Anything longer than 16 is a waste.

The threading is useful for other muzzle devices, such as suppressors.

There are a couple of ways it can be added. A factory threaded barrel is probably the best bet. You can get it done afterwards for around $80-100. You can also buy an add on threaded unit to allow you to attach muzzle devices afterwards, that's the least attrative option.

All the standard MOE versions have threaded barrels don't they?

its cheaper to buy a 15-22 with a flash hider and threaded barrel now than to figure out you want to add one on down the road. likes other have said, just makes it easier to add on other things later. if you dont feel like you ever will then dont bother with it.

Alexwolf,

welcome to the board and welcome to the club. Yes, once you get a hold of this rifle you need to have one. I had seen one at the range but saw one at the LGS and had an impulse buy. The Magpul sights, stock and upper ladder covers.

Decide what you want, color and place the order. Also order extra mags, you can't have enough. I started with 2 and have added 4 more when I found them on sale.

If you are still searching two LGS in Atlanta have them in stock once you find what you want.

Armistead Armoury www.armisteadarms.com and ask for Tom. Alpharetta GA and they can ship to FFL dealer close to you.

Good luck and once you get the rilfe you will enjoy.

Hey all you OD owners, do the OD accessories match the color from Academy?

I spent another day in between 3 gun stores. Choices:

OD $459 - Academy
Black w/threaded barrel $499 - Bass Pro Shops
MOE FDE - $559 at my FLGS.

I think I am now starting to lean away from the MOE just because after picking around here I am really digging some of the Zombie mods, and I think I am going to end up replacing the grip anyway. I like the green dot laser and I plan to get a red dot scope of some sort.

So, do the green aftermarket accessories match the gun?

No there is a slight difference in OD GREEN. I wouldn't worry about just get to academy and pick up the green one before there all gone. You'll love it.

Also new to the boards and not yet an owner. Just moved to Sunny SW Florida from Mass. Been reading here for a while and have decided to take the plunge. Do I need to switch to a Florida DL before I purchase said .22?

We have a range at my parents house in Pleasanton. I really don't go to any of the ranges around here although I live down the street from one. The range close to me is BULLET HOLE. Pretty good range and nice people. I usually go when my father in law wants to shoot.

Huh...really? Just go get the OD from Academy while they still have them. Do not buy anything else except a spare mag or two, pick up a 10 round shorty if you can for prone and bench shooting. I wouldn't go crazy on red dots, lasers ect just shoot it as is for a while. After you shoot it a bit you will have a better idea of what you REALLY want.

I agree with ral2ooo......I have several rifles with red dot, reflex, and reticule type scopes.....I have the MOE that came with the Magpul flip up iron sights.............I fired using the irons for a while to get a feel for the rifle.............I decided on a reticule type scope because I discovered that the MOE 15 22 was accurate enough that the red dot or reflex would diminish the accuracy potential.

no the colors do not match. od green is a bit darker and foilage green is a bit lighter. i prefer the contrast of black furniture on my green gun anyways. here is a pic showing the 15-22 green with black and a couple od green xd's.

Is that unmounted scope a AIM tactical? If so how do you like it. I keep running into these things and they look quite solid with good optics. I was going to get one but not knowing anything about them thought I better do a little research.
