40mm scope too big?
I bought two scopes at WalMart yesterday. One is the 3-9x32 ($56) and the other is a 4-16x40 mm ($69). They are both Center Points. I didn't open the 40mm one because it looks massive. But, I did open up the smaller one and I couldn't mount it because the mounts don't fit. I think I am going to return both of them and get something else. I do want an adjustable zoom. Any sugesstions?

Personally, the 4-16 is too much, not for the size but for the magnification at anything under 100 yards. I have a one that I used on another rifle for metallic silhouette shooting that I tried and then replaced it with a 3-9x32 that I have. It was a much better fit for me. Most of the time I use it at 4x and only go to 9x for 75-100 yard bench shooting.
With either size scope you will likely need tall rings that are made for a Picatinny rail, not a Weaver rail, which is what probably came with your scopes.
Personally, I'd keep the 3-9 and mount it. Here's what it looks like on my 15-22.

I use a 3-9X40 and it works fine. Like others have said, I only use the higher magnification when hunting those raskly wabbits

It looks good. I'm thinking of keeping it too.
Are your rings 1 inch or two inch?

Hey this is just me but the 40mm objective is just too big on an ar rifle and puts the scope line of sight too high off the barrel bore axis. IMHO.
But then most of my gopher shooting is within 50yards so shots closer than 30yards need some major holdover with a scope mounted too high off the bore of the barrel axis.

DelFuego: You asked about ring 1 or 2 ". The ring size refers to the size of the scope body 1", or 30mm. What Majorlk was talking about was the height of the scope ring, they come in low, med, high, extra high, ask him what he used with his 15-22. Be Safe,

I'm still new to this stuff. Too many choices/options for all of this stuff. I was trying to refer to the height. When I was in the Army, we didn't have much of a choice, we got a standard issue M-16, M-60, or M-203. Anyway, I don't want to break the bank, I just want to mount a scope to my 15-22 because my friend has one on his Savage .22, a cheap one at that, and I just can't let him show me up because he was in the Navy. :-)

I just bought a $10 set of rings that will allow a 50mm objective; they are in the middle, not short and not extra tall. Just wanted to mount a 6X24X40 to try out at the range; not leaving it on the gun; going back to the Red Dot and flip up sites. Just wanted to see what kind of groups it would do with a target scope on it.

There are no 2" rings that I have ever seen. My rings are 1" diameter, Quick-detachable Leaper/UTG tall rings. Don't get suckered into $50+ rings or $150 single piece mounts. They simply aren't necessary on a 15-22. The QD mounts are about $30 and the non-QD are about $20.
I have the tall rings on a riser because that puts the scope are the same eye level as my Barski RDS, which gets mounted to the forend instead of the receiver.
Here's a photo of that installation.

I use a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 BDC 150. I like it a lot. Although it was $170, it is a Rimfire scope.

I use the 4-16x40 on my sport using the original rings and 1/2 inch risers from FAACorp. Dont need the risers for clearance but they help with sight alignment. I put an 8-32x42 on my sport, was shooting unbelievable accurate out to 200 yards but for anything but target shooting the field of view was too small...just my .02 cents but I run a 3-9x32 on my 10-22

I have used 4-14x44 tactical scopes on mine now and then. Instead of rings I use the NcSTAR QR scope mount. It fits either 1" or 30mm tubes because it has removable split metal spacer rings to change the diameter.

Here is a pic of a 3-9x50 on a QD base. The center of the scope is right at the center of the iron sights AKA co-witness.

No offense taken. I am absorbing all of the information that is being posted here and elsewhere. With it, I will be making a good scope purchase in the immediate future.
