Default Need Reddot help with MP.

Wife is having a shooting problem with her MP Compact .22. No longer can see well with iron sights (She has A.M.D) Her shooting time is going fast, so figured this group is the best to ask.

Doctor suggested use of Red dot. She is looking at Vortex Viper or Venom both MOA 6. Needs pros and cons on what to do.

what is AMD?
I have a Venom 3 moa. Put it on bright, and the dot "enlarges" but is less precise and sharp. My cataracts cause it to blur somewhat.
I thought the Venom was 3 moa and the Viper 6 moa. 3 moa is tiny but sharp and visible. Best for target work. 6 moa will be easier to see but cover more of target and less precise. I think your Wife's unfortunate eye condition would determine the Dot size needed.
I am satisfied with my Vortex venom on my Mark l .22.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye disease that can blur the sharp, central vision you need for activities like reading and driving. (its progressing rather fast)

To be totally frank I'm rather old fashioned and know next to nothing about those type sights. She asked me to post and get some advice.

Thanks, Dave

Hate to hear that. Depending on how the degeneration is, She may have difficulty in seeing the Dot. Definitely go with the larger Dot size.
I would think go to LGS with your Wife and have her actually look at Red Dot sights in person before buying. Holosun is more $$ but has a Ring around the Dot which may help. Also be sure you can find a mount for the sight. Most likely one to go in the rear dovetail and replace the rear sight.

I think she just might be better off with an open style red dot than a tubular style. Something like in the pic below. They aren't expensive, and depending on the make/model, usually come with 4 different types of reticule (Large Dot, Small Dot Dot Inside a Circle, & Crosshair), also, multiple brightness levels and both Red & Green lighted reticule. Just a thought. Good luck.

+1 I have slight familiarity with AMD and agree with this type of sight.

Also, if possible it would be good to have her look through some to see if she can use them better. Perhaps at the range there is a kind soul who will let her look through theirs. Also try both red and green dots. One color might be easier for her to pick up.
My mother had macular degeneration. She wasn't a shooter, but it sure put and end to her sewing. Keep your wife shooting as long as possible. As long as she continues to enjoy it, do what you need to to keep her going. And Hello, Mrs. Lakesider! Hope you're having a wonderful day today!

I have a Holosun 407C (green) that has a 2 MOA dot on my M&P 2.0 9mm. I did not have the slide milled, I use an OuterImpact mounting plate.

Thanks to you and all that have answered, my wife just looked at what was posted and she shot last night and got some advice from her Bullseye league. She will check out different companies offerings and take things from there!

As far as her having a wonderful day no problem there she wakes up next to me every morning.

Hope she finds something that works. Depending on eyesight problems a red dot can appear star shaped instead of a dot. When I first got my Vortex Strikefire II for my 15-22 I thought it was defective. Just my eyes. It has a green and red dot and you can adjust the brightness. I prefer the green dot. Seems I can see it better in the daylight.

+1 with eric300. These sights are soooooo much easier to use . Try looking up a Sightmark Firefield Impact XL. It has 3MOA dots with reticles & gets lots of good reviews. It's also easier to shoot with both eyes open. Strange at the first attempt but very quickly learned.

VaTom's mention of a 'star shaped' dot is found among people with an Astigmatism defect in their eyesight. It's more common than you might think but is easily overcome with the right choice of sight. Whatever you go for, try to make sure you go for a 'Reflex' type.

Good luck.

Iain
