Don't confuse sight radius with eye relief. My understanding is that sight radius is the distance between front and rear iron sights, and does not really apply to scopes. As an example of a sight radius issue, most experts advise against an inexperienced shooter getting a very compact pistol, since the sight radius on a tiny gun is necessarily small. A slight misalignment of front and rear while aiming will produce a large error at the target. Longer handguns have more space between the sights, which makes it easier to line them up accurately and hit the target.
Eye relief is the distance between your eye and the ocular (rear) lens of a scope. If your eye is too close or too far away, you won't see the full circular picture. On a .22 you can use a scope with small eye relief, since there is little recoil, but on a deer rifle obviously you need more eye relief so the scope won't smack you in the eye when you pull the trigger.
Here's a good article about scopes and red dots that has a section on eye relief.
