Question New 15-22 owner with a few general questions

Hey all!

So I just got my 15-22 last Friday after doing a bunch of research and reading/lurking on this forum. (Which btw is a huge and excellent resource, thanks for that!)

Anyhow I have a few questions I was hoping you guys could help me out with.

1.) I need a sling and am looking at doing a QD single point with the clamp style fitting on the receiver extension (fake buffer tube). Looking for advice on what brand and where to buy?

2.) I ordered and received some Norma tactical 22lr from cabelas (500 rd box) and noticed that it is INCREDIBLY oily/waxy to the point it almost slips out of your fingers while loading. Is this normal? It does shoot just fine.

3.) just a basic cleaning question, is there any special tools or objects that you guys have used that make cleaning the gun easier/quicker? ( not hard to clean now but just looking for any tips)

And the last question:

4.) are there any must have accessories etc that I should look in to buying right away? I already have a red dot that I co- witnessed with the sights and have my eye on an AFG and rail covers.

Sorry for the length of post, just. New owner that's totAlly psyched!

Chris

1) I can't help here I have the MOE and it has the QD on the receiver, there is a thread telling how to install one if you feel brave.

2) If it shoot fine in your firearm just use it, .22 is hard to come by in most areas.

3) Boresnake and straw to put over the extractor be careful not to bend it, if you bend it try this thread.Just picked up a M&P 15-22 (problems and fixes)

4) shoot it and buy ammo right now then add what you feel you would like to add. Lots of pictures of decked out 15-22 so you can get ideas from them.

And a warm from “wild and wonderful “ West Virginia at least that’s what they tell us.

1) Midwest Industries MCTAR-30 End Plate Sling Adapter Works with the 15-22. link: https://www.midwestindustriesinc.com...category_ID=97

You may also want to consider something like the Magpul MS3 sling. It works as a 1 and 2 point sling. link: Magpul | Unfair Advantage

2) Norma Tac ammunition does feel kind of waxy, but it shoots fine.

3) Boresnake idea already mentioned. A small can of compressed air to blow into the bolt firing pin area now and then. Had a fail to fire problem one day, and someone here mentioned it. Worked great!

4) Picture thread already mentioned. Lots of ideas there.

Welcome to the forum! Tons of advice from some great people here.

For accessories... just my opinion but aside from sights (iron, buis, optics, etc) get cheap accessories. The 15-22 doesn't need combat gear, spend the money you save on ammo!
Welcome and enjoy

I put the Magpul CTR & AFG2 on mine. Bone stock otherwise.

rgkitchen, how did you attach the sling on the handguard, I'm looking for a similar sling set-up.

There are a few options. Magpul makes the RSA (rail sling attachment) available for clip attachment or QD style. Other quality and cheap options available. Just go on Google or Amazon and search "rail sling mount" and several options pop up.

Less is more. But a really good trigger is important.

The trigger on mine was usable but that's about all. I put in a 3# Jard non-adjustable that I had around, and it was a great improvement. Today I would put in a Geisselle G2S or ALG; cost is reasonable.

I put on a Bushnell TR-25 (?) red dot on about a 1" riser. Great sight for the money; love it.

Hung a plain sling swivel on the bottom front rail, and a stock sling.

Avoid the fuzzy dice and J.C. Whitney "gotta have" bling. It's a gun, not a fashion statement.

Clean up the bolt guide rails with a hard Arkansas stone.
You can get cheap sling mounts, or you can get high quality American made ones for not much more here;
Slings and Sling Accessories Tacticool22, Parts and Accessories for .22 Caliber Firearms

Thanks for all the help and suggestions everyone, I really appreciate it all!

As of right now I have added only a few things but this gun will shoot the wings off a fly at fifty meters I swear.

So far:

Barska multi reticle red dot (co-witnessed with the iron sights, the idea for which I got here in this forum)
Magpul moe rubberized grip
Tapco vertical grip (had this sitting around from my old 10/22)

Also bought three extra s&w 25 rd clips with the gun.

Looking at doing a 3 1/2lb trigger, magpul AFG, magpul rail covers like those pictured above, and single point sling and mount and calling her good.

Thanks again for all the help and great ideas!

-chris
