First post, been lurking for awhile. I bought the M&P 15-22 as a good trainer to supplement my LWRC M6A2 (and save a LOT in ammo costs). I'm extremely happy with the 15-22 in all aspects but one...I wish it weighed more (actually, wish my AR weighed less but that isn't possible). I imagine I'm not the only one with similar thoughts and was wondering if anyone has come up w/ possible solutions. I've already replaced my stock w/ an LMT SOPMOD and loaded up the battery compartments to add a few ounces. Any other ideas? I know there are plenty of tactical add-ons that would add weight but not really the solution I'm looking for. Thanks.

I filled my buffer tube with ammo. I was able to get a mag and a half in there.

dangle some HALIBUT 16oz Weights on the Barrel.....

its a shame really..
its the only thing thats a let down...
personally, I think that if enough of us contacted S & W they could / may make an after - market alloy / steel body upper & lower,
then we could swap over all the action ( mag realeas, hold open, bolt, trigger mech, ect), barrel / forestock, & fittings ( grip, butt stock )
to upgrade...
it wouldnt be that hard for them to do... and it would cost the earth either.. also, it would take the 15-22 to a new level ..!!!

I also bought a 15-22 as trainer to my AR15. I even swapped out the handguard to a Magpul Midlength MOE. I plan on putting some lead in the stock tube and on the inside of the handguards.

My guess is that similar balance to your AR is just as important as total weight. There's small flat lead adhesive wheel weights that would stick to the inside of your grip, and I'm guessing that you could bend them enough to stick to the inside of the receiver extension (stock tube) and to the barrel inside the handguard.

I also felt the gun was bit light.

In my case, I was lucky and had a spare RRA Tactical Carry Handle and it weighs a quite a bit. I also added a bipod to put some weight out front.

Overall, it has brought the weight up to what I consider a more realistic level compared to my other guns.

i chatted with "tacticool22" about a way to add weight to the 15 22 a while back... because he was already making the conversion barrel nuts anyway. the idea was just to make a standard configured barrel nut only a lot longer...the length would only be a little shorter than the standard handguard so it wouldn't be seen, and the O.D. could be stepped up just a little for even more weight. since it was a one-off item, the quote was not "cost-effective", but since it appears there are others who also want more weight on the 15 22, maybe he, or someone else, could fuel the need if the demand was there...

With my barrel shroud, sling, optics and ammo filled buffer tube, my 15-22 weighs in at 7#. For me, that feels great!

At a buck fiddy, it may have made your rifle heavier, but it sure made your wallet a helluva lot lighter, too!

If there is a large enough demand for the weighted barrel nut, I will make them.

I understand the weight issue of the M&P but with that said, I love the weight and wish my Spike Tacticals ST-15s were the same.. As far as adding weight, buy a cheap forward grip (the heavy aluminun one) add a laser and flashlight and bi-pod, get a double mag holder, fill the pistol grip with lead.. then you'll have this.....:
