Default 10 or 12 round mag for prone position?

Noob here. A buddy of mine recently bought an M&P15-22 and convinced me to buy one so I'll be picking one up in a couple of days.

The 25 round mag looks a little long for prone position firing so I'm planning to get a shorter mag for that. I looked on the S&W site and they have two smaller mags available, 10 and 12 round. I assume that either would be OK for prone position firing, right?

Are you going to be using a bipod? I have the long 10/25 RD mag, and I had to get a tall bipod:

BIPOD-205 - Bipod Tactical OP Rubber Feet 8.3-12.7" Height Leapers UTG Picatinny Rail Or Swivel Stud Mount

when the bipod is fully extended, the mag clears the floor by about an inch. If you want some extra 10 rd mags, I suggest 44mag.com:

44MAG.com - Smith & Wesson - S&W .22lr 10rd Short M&P15 -22 Magazine Smith and Wesson

Hope this answers your question.

No, plan to go without a bipod.

Thanks for the link.

No prob, I just tried using it without the bipod, and I still have about 2-3" clearance from the mag to floor, might depend on ur body and the way you hold it too. 25 rd mag maybe fine in prone for some, can't say for all.

Interesting input. I'm 6-2 with 34" arms so maybe it'll work for me with the 25 round mag. Guess I'll wait until I have the gun in hand to see what's up.

You should be ok with the 25 round mags. I'm 6" and have about a quarter inch clearance between the mag and the ground. Now, we're assuming that my prone position is correct. With my AR, I can rest on the mag. Haven't tried that with the 15-22 yet. I also have 2 10 round mags and obviously no issues there. I've never seen a 12 round mag though.

I think I was looking at pistol mags. (There's your proof that I'm a noob.)

I used to fire the 16 prone in the Corps and it had a 30 round mag and had no problem. I am 6 ft tall also but shorter people also had no problems prone at the range. the M & P 15-22 is similar build but shorter lol so you should have no problem. 8).

I prefer the short 10-round mags for shooting over a bench or table. For consistent POI, avoid resting the weapon on the magazine.

So not really a hijack but more of a "part b" of the OP's topic. With the AR15, several people rest on their mags. It's so common that Magpul has released an attachment to the PMAG to stabalize your mag as a monopod. Many do this and have no issues with feed or POI.

My question is around the 15-22. Would it have the same result or are you really going to see issues with feeds and POI? and if it does impact POI, how is it doing that? My son has trouble with the larger mags and the bench so I'm looking to be schooled on this. Thanks.

I shoot off a table in the back yard alot. The mag gets used as a 'mono pod' , mine has zero feed issues due to added pressure.

Single mags only. My coupled mags will move in the couplers if used this way.

I used to use the mag as a rest when I was using a bench at the range and as long as you kept the rifle tight against you I had no problems. Now I put a bipod on her and its even better. they have bipods that are fair and at a good price at amazon.

I went prone with the 25 round body(CA compliant) magazine thinking I had the 10 round shorty in there haha. Had to use the mag as a monopod, unfortunately. It did get in my way but I probably could have leaned to one side a touch & it would have been okay.

I have not experienced any FTF caused by resting the mag on the bench. And I don't know exactly how or why my POI shifts. This may be a peculiarity of only my 15-22. Others have no problems using the magazine as a bipod.

My POI definitely shifts, depending on just how much pressure I place on the mag. Presumably, this would be a non-issue if I sighted in and kept exactly the same mag pressure for every shot. But this introduces another variable into my shooting routine--like breath control, sight picture, trigger control, mag pressure, etc.

Test your weapon by firing several groups, half with magazine rested, half with the handguard supported. Same ammo, same distance of course. And post your results here--curious minds want to know!

I lay on my back and shoot upside down so I don't have that problem.

In the Army you'll hear both schools of thought - "don't rest it in the dirt, you'll introduce malfunctions" and "do what works for you". Personally, it seems to depend on the magazine. If it's a crummy mag that's been tossed in an ammo crate and hasn't been cleaned in 15 years, it'll probably have problems.

You are probably looking at the wrong model mags. The only S&W .22 that has both a 10 and a 12 round mag is the Mdl 41 pistol.
The AR15-22 has 2 different 10 round mags, a 25 rd mag pinned to only 10 rounds and a short true 10 round mag. The short 10 rounds ones are the ones I use on mine when using my benchrest at the range. I can use the 25s but then I have to jack the rest way up. As a competition speed shooter I find that there is no amount of mags that is perfect. I have 4 of the short 10s for shooting in matches that limit me to 10/mag or sighting in at the range. I have 8 S&W 25s, 2 Promag 32s and one BDM 50 drum.

I can find 10 and 20 round mags from many online sites for $30 or so plus about $11 ground shipping...........................I bought 3 30 round mags at my LGS at $ $32 each....They will order me 10 and 20 round mags for $35 each...........If I could find some one with a 10 or 20 round mag I would trade a 30 even or maybe add a few bucks to the trade....THis is for a Umarex (Walther) Colt C 4 22cal

The LGS and online kill me with such high shipping that takes at least two weeks as best to arrive.

I bought a second 25 round mag from S&W and I'm about to place an order for 2 10s.

I think the 10s will make it easier to shoot from the bench and I usually load 10 rounds in my larger magazines - makes my bullets last longer.

Just make sure they are the real 10s. For a long time the only 10s MidwayUSA had were the pinned 25s. I suggest 44Mag.com which I think was where I got my true 10s.

Unfortunately, 44mag.com is out of them, as is just about everyone else. I'm guessing S&W's supplier just made one production of 10-rounders and went back to the 25-round mags.

I don't know this for a fact, but most items like that are done in runs of one size at a time. I'm hoping they do another run soon, as I need (want?) five more!

Ha....You can always dig a hole for the mag in front of your prone position or cut a hole in the table if you are shooting from a rest.

You can cut up the 25 rounders to make shorter ones.

If you don't mind sacrificing the 25 rounders.....
