Default Question for M&P 15-22 owners please....

At the moment I have a Spike's upper in 22 rimfire. They recommend you clean it, oil it for storage, but run it dry. What say you guys about the 15-22? I'll have one of them by the first of the week and really haven't seen much about this. Just trying to do the right thing and treat her right. Thanks for any help....

I have zero experience with the spikes upper, but the majority of 15-22 owners run them with minimal lube on the BCG rails and nothing on the bolt body.

Been running mine that way for 18 months and about 12,000 rounds with no problem.

You can run it wet or (somewhat) dry. I personally spray my bolt with corrosion x and then wipe some off.

I clean mine before first use. Then oil the rails real lightly and then run the boresnake through with just a light touch of lube in the middle. That's it.

Same here, light lube on rails and that's it. 15k on the rifle and it's smooth like butter.

I like to keep mine clean (habit left over from M16A1 days) and use Frog-Lube for cleaning the bolt face and rails. It also lubes things really well without be drippy about it. I also use canned air to puff the grit out of the trigger group if I've played outside, followed by some of the Frog stuff on pivot points with a toothpick or cotton swab. Twenty-two is generally as dirty-shooting as the old Russki 7.62 steel-case so wiping out your receiver and upper housings may not make it work any better but you will feel better for doing it.

i run mine well cleaned with ever so little lubing to the bolt rails...
i've actually been thinking about letting it go an outing or two or 3 without cleaning(my outings have been less than 200 rounds each time)...

I lube the entire bolt and rails, chamber, fcg and lightly coat a thin layer throughout the upper and lower interior. A lot easier to wipe off especially since I polished bolt and rails.

Just a comment on lubing the bolt body and the inside of the upper ...

Neither one should be wet. The action won't run any smoother and the lube will attract and hold unburnt powder and fired powder residue. The tolerances are too loose for the lube to have any real effect. A light lube on the BCG rails is another matter, though. A couple of drops of CLP in each rail is more than enough. If you use a grease such as Frog Lube or Tetra, apply it with a fingertip; if you can see the grease, you likely used too much.

A good device to clean the inside of the upper receiver is a baby bottle brush. It is large enough in diameter to scrub the upper. Just be careful around the ejector.
