Default Quietest round that can still function in the 15-22?

I've done a lot of googling and research and have certainly found very quiet .22 rounds, such as CB's and CCI quiet rounds, But I'm just curious if you any of you can suggest the quietest ammo you know of that will still actually cycle the bolt in the semi auto 15-22...Thanks in advance guys

CBs will not cycle the bolt.
Std Vel will in most.
Or if your state allows, you can get a Fed license and buy a suppressor, which makes it about like an airgun sound. Not movie quiet, but you don't need ear protection.

Just pay the $200 and get a real suppressor. $200 is what? One month of shooting?

Get one in a standard thread and you can use it on all your .22's....

Using low power rounds may well end with a squib. Pay attention to the sound the rounds make and go slow. Even though a low power round may cycle the action doesn't guarantee it'll make it out the barrel.

Or......Buy a silencer......

Aguila SSS cycled in my 15-22 just fine. I think it's the quietest functioning ammo for this rifle. YMMV

Hey guys, I appreciate the suppressor suggestions and would already be all over it if I didnt live in california...So unfortunately I cannot legally own a suppressor. So so far i've seen the suggestion of aguila sss as potentially the quietest thus far that will still cycle? Keep the suggestions coming if you guys have em...Thanks for the help so far!

True true. But once you've spent that money you have the suppressor.

If you spend $500 in quiet ammo what doe you have? Nothing, you've shot it all and need to spend more.....

-Edit Ah, the People's Republik of California. Should have realized that. Then yeah. I've had good results from Serbol sub sonic decent enough pop instead of a bang. It is as dirty as ****, but it works. Don't know if you can get it in USA, its made in Siberia.

So - we ought not to be buying ammo, because after we shoot it, it's just - gone??

Lol it does read like that, but I meant $500 invested in a suppressor will be of more benefit than $500 invested in ammunition trying to replicate the performance.

The suppressor will work for $10 000 of ammo, but the $500 will only work for $500.....

CCI standard velocity is the quietest I have found that still cycles the action, and is accuarate at 50 yards.

I thought the tax stamp was like $400, plus another $400 for the suppressor. That's a lot of coin. Seems easier to just wear hearing protection. if you're trying to get rid of a rodent without attracting too much neighbot attention, spend $200 on a 1200 fps airgun.

Or 100-130 on a used bolt action gun and $5 on a box of cci cbs or remington cbees ( iv shot both and remmys hit harder and go a lil further )

The tax stamp for a suppressor is $200. The tax stamp on a <16" SBR is $200. If you want a suppressed SBR it'll be $400, plus other expenses (engraving lower, buying suppressor, gunsmithing.....)

Not really the place to ask, but can someone tell me the reason or logic for this, assuming SBR is just a shortened barrel version of the gun? You can obviously buy pistols that can be fitted with stocks that have short barrels, right? (Doesn't browning or someone make one that converts to with or without a stock?) Or is adding a stock to a pistol illegal for the same reasons (or lack of same) as shortening a rifle barrel?

Woady : Which you will need to SBR and get a suppressor for

RRaisley, looking for logic in a government organization or rule is always a good way to waste time. There doesn't have to be any logic.

In the USA it is illegal to put a stock on a pistol without first registering the lower as a SBR - Short Barreled Rifle. If you do, it is I believe, a felony. Something like the Roni kit for a Glock, or even the Glock shoulder stock is a no no. Why? Who knows. The shoulder stock'd Glock is hardly any more dangerous than the normal Glock, and harder to conceal, but there it is.

If you do SBR a pistol, something that can be done legally with a Form 4 (IIRC?) you can not return it to the original pistol state. It is now a registered rifle. Making a rifle out of a pistol can ease some burdens of trying to make a longer style gas system work in a shorter space. Something like the DRAKO AK pistol makes a very fine SBR AK rifle, as the short pistol length gas tube works better than trying to shorten the longer rifle length gas system. There may be a touch more gunsmithing to fit a stock to a pistol, but the paperwork is the same, IIRC.

Take what I say with a pinch of salt, I do not live in the USA.

Okay, thanks. I guess I can see that making a semi-auto 30-06 shorter & more concealable might be considered BADTM, but doing that to a .22 just makes a clumsy pistol. Oh well, as you say, no need for logic here. Move along....

the quietest i've tried which cycle reliably were remington subsonics. The aguila were louder (may have something to do with the shorter casing), and they tumble making them not as accurate. Winchester super X subsonics were super quiet, but caused my setup to burst fire as they didn't have enough oomph to reliably push the bolt back far enough.

ok...Just bought some CCI Green Tag .22 ammo. Not super quiet but at 1070FPS should be a bit quieter than some of the standard 1250 velocity stuff while still cycling the bolt, so we will c. As for the rem. subsonics. I will order some of those asap, just couldnt buy them because they didnt have them in store. Thanks for the suggestions guys, really appreciate it as always!

i got my rems at walmart and it was under $4 for a box of 50. I'd try that before paying for shipping or ordering any qty online.

I have not used rem subsonics, but I can tell you that rem CBees are VERY inconsistent ammo both in volume and trajectory.

Just for info purposes. CCI quiet-22s will eject, but don't push the bolt back far enough to load a new round.

Good luck with Remming Subsonic. I tried some after I bought my suppressor. Half would't cycle the 15-22, the other half had a supersonic crack.

hmmm, It seems like some people have ok luck with some of these rounds and others downright disapprove. If the cci quiets eject but dont load another round would it be dangerous to just load up the mag and pull the charging handle every time to fire them? sort of like single shot...
Right now the green tags from CCI look promising, as they seem like there going to be fairly but are a match grade standard round at around 1070 fps...The quieter the better though for me which is why I'm asking and exploring possibilities.
-Thanks again guys

was just looking through my ammo can and it looks like i did try some cci (50 of 100 are gone), but they are labeled as cci subsonic 22lr hp they were about $11 for 100 in a slider pack. they cycled fine, but i didn't find them to be as quiet as the remington.

the cci ones don't say "quiet" on them anywhere. so they are either older packaging, or something completely different.

You can do that, but it makes the use of a semi-auto kinda useless. If ultimate quiet is your goal, buy a bolt action.

Or got to the expense and effort of getting a suppressor and a federal tax stamp.

Hand feeding is how I initially sighted mine at home, so it only needed tweaking when I got to the range. Not practical for everyday shooting but it has it's uses at times.

Agreed.

Personally, I would not put the money into a 15-22 to sbr it. I would definitely buy the .22 suppressor though as it can be used on many hosts.

The 15-22 lower as we all know is a proprietary non mil spec composite lower. The smarter investment would be to sbr a mil spec stripped lower and then you can put a dedicated .22 sbr upper on it. But you can also put a 5.56 sbr upper on it or use a 300 blackout sbr upper. Much better options IMO.

As for the quietest rounds, I like the Remington subsonics. They are super quiet in my MP22. Suppressed, they are stupid quiet!

I will try them out on the 15-22 suppressed and unsuppressed and report back.

Standard velocity and subsonics are the same speed, about 1070 FPS.
1250 FPS is high velocity
1640 FPS is hyper velocity

The thing is a non SBR is 16" + 5". That's musket lengths. (I know a standard M16 is 20", I am over stating things for emphasis). A 10.5 or 11.5 with a 5" can is back to where you started. IMO it is well worth the effort.

Just a personal observation but I have found the Remington subsonics function quite well in all my .22 Pistols. Interestingly the accuracy is right there with the $10+ "target" ammo.

sadly the sbr/supressed look is what im after more than anything. its why i have a barrel shroud. im curious though, are supressors rifled or do your ballistics change to whatever you sbr the rifle length at?

Suppressors are not rifled. They are usually a series of baffles that look like cones inside. (.22 suppressor) If you chop the factory 15-22 barrel you will have exactly that. A 16" barrel with 1:16 twist getting chopped almost in half.

Only for some of us is it already quiet enough. A .22 caliber rifle like the M&P is still at least upwards of 130DB. I hate that I live in california because I'm a musician that loves shooting, but I've already begun to damage my hearing, and seeing as my career depends on it I cant be around loud noises any more. Seeing as how I love shooting and AR-15 based platforms, and my 15-22 for that matter, I'm going through extra lengths to make them as quiet as possible. And a silencer bringing the .22 down below 110DB is brilliant, especially with hearing protection and a can. Then I could shoot all day, with minimal cost, no worry, and maximum enjoyment. But long story short, I'm already looking in to setting up a trust in arizona with a permanent address and keeping the silencer there, and only shooting in AZ. (around a 2 and 1/2 hour drive for me), which is well worth it to protect my hearing and enjoy shooting and training with such a wonderful weapon.

Thanks for all the input and advice so far guys. I Really appreciate it!

-Charles
