From what I understand it won't damage the barrel, but it may mar the finish. Which will be removed if you get the barrel threaded anyway.....

FWIW, if you want the adaptor to STAY in position, the set screw will have to be tight enough to bite into the barrel at least a little bit - at the very least. You will also need a layer of Blue LocTite between the barrel and the adaptor.

On mine, I filed a flat on the bottom of the barrel for the set screw to fit into, as well as the LocTite.

I took my 15-22 to a local gunsmith, and he threaded the barrel for $45.

$45!? That's awesome.... I was just quoted $100 - not worth it to me, but $45 would be!

Yup, good price - if it was done on a lathe and not with a die.

Around here, the going rate is $85-$100.

In CT, a bare, threaded barrel is one of the "evil features" that determines if a rifle violates our AWB (yea, rimfires are included). Anything attached to a threaded barrel must be permanently welded on. With my adaptor/brake combo, I can remove it and have a perfectly legal smooth barrel (albeit with a grove on the bottom). Plus, a welded-on muzzle device makes it impossible to remove the barrel.

Perfect

I like the way you think.

I'm considering getting another just to have a place to mount my micro dot. Plus it would be cool to have one with some color since mine is all black. I know it would get used.
