Default My first red dot - setup help please.

Hello,

Just received my first red dot sight today. Was able to pick it up from Amazon for $100 shipped. I just got a few minutes to mess around with it during lunch, and overall I think I'll be fairly satisfied (Not that I would be able to tell much difference between this and an ACOG or something pricey).

Amazon.com: Truglo Red-Dot 42Mmx2 Dual Color Multi Reticle Sight, Black: Sports & Outdoors

I need some guidance in getting this set up.

Setting it up with the factory iron sights with no riser won't work. The rear sight blocks just about everything. At this point I don't think I'd like to cowitness both front and rear sights through the scope...but it may be something I'd like to try later.

If I remove the rear sight, things are better. The top of the front post is lined up with the Red Dot pretty well. They do line up, however, at the top of the scope from my POV, which I don't think is ideal...but I could be wrong. This leads me to believe that I would need a riser to be able to cowitness with the front site if I so choose (to be honest, I'm a little unsure if I want to cowitness at all). Is there a science involved in determining how high of a riser I would require to cowitness with the front sight in the middle of the scope?

If I remove the front sight, I really do think I get a nice sight picture. With my standard cheek weld though, the dot appears at the top of the scope again...just like when the front sight is attached. I again wouldn't think this would be ideal. I didn't mess with adjusting the windage or elevation on the scope, however, I would think I could maybe just adjust the elevation on the dot so that it would appear in the middle of the scope. Or is this again, an instance where it really would be much better to opt for a riser?

Any help you guys can provide would be awesome. Hopefully I've done an okay job of explaining the situation. I'd at least like to be armed with a little knowledge before going into a local shop...maybe they'd work with me on just trying different height risers until I find something that works.

thanks,

cclark

I wouldn't make any adjustments until you are sighting it in. if you move your dot in the middle of the glass, who knows where your POI would be.

I'd get a riser. I run a 1" riser but some slightly lower. With the 1", it allows me to co-witness in the lower 3rd. Not that I do it but what it allowed me to do was sight in the red dot without having to fire a shot. I just got it all lined up and when I dropped my sights, the dot was pretty much spot on.

I haven't used that particular sight but it looks like you need a 1/2 in riser to cowitness. Or get a slightly taller riser to put the irons in the bottom 1/3 of the view (which is what I like if you have a fixed front sight).

When I put the scope on my 15-22 I put the stock sights in my junk box. I'll never use them again.

While I think I'm going to love the hell out of this scope...I'd considered just storing my iron sights on the bottom rail when they're not in use. I have a foregrip and keep it fairly far down the stock, so, they won't really be in the way. Plus there's times, where it will just be more fun with iron sights, especially if I forget a spare battery or something.

I've played too much call of duty, never know when you're going to get EMP'd and need your iron sights handy......

i removed my stock sights when i added optics, no need to run back-ups for a range gun. a medium riser works fine but i preferred the higher 1" mounts for a more comfortable sight picture.

A medium riser (~ 1/2") should do the trick. That will put the iron sights about 1/3rd from the bottom of the tube. I prefer to use a folding rear sight, to keep it out of the way unless needed. A folding front sight would be nice, but that's not an option on my rifle, but it's not in the way if I center the dot in the tube, as recommended. I zero the iron sights with the tube in place, but it doesn't seem to matter.

The dot may or may not align with the front sight. Most red dot sights project a virtual image at 80-100 yards, so there will be a lot of parallax shift with respect to the front sight.

Check the tightness of the mounting nuts frequently. Anything removeable is moveable, and they will shoot loose fairly quickly, with interesting results.

This is what I did too. I have an Aimpoint on mine and have no need for the flip ups even though I have a rear. I might as well sell it.

I got a real cheapo red dot and co-witnessed with .75 riser. I like having the irons in there in case the battery poots out at the range or if an EMP goes off.

I like having iron sights available because while shooting friendly "competition" with a friend or new acquaintance, it's not fair that I shoot a red dot or scope while they only have iron. I like to be able to adapt, depending on the targets and those I'm shooting with. That's why I got the 15-22 MOE, so the folded sights are always available, with or without my red dot on a QR mount, or I can mount my QR scope. In seconds, I have any of the 3 available, and it works well for me.

It takes me longer to change my shooting glasses than it does my sights (need corrective lenses with the red dot, can't use them with the iron sights).

I run my backup sights more than I do my red dot. I just enjoy it more so I got folding sights and just turn the dot off when I use them. My son likes to use the red dot so he simply folds down the sights and runs the dot. We did get to the range one day and saw that the red dot was left on. Didn't realize it until we were in our lane and didn't have a spare battery. I was thankful that I had backups.

With an absolute co witness you can use the ring of the red dot sight as a rear peep sight. It won't work for 500m shots, but for anything 50m and it it'll do. It works especially well with a micro dot like an H1 or Primary Arms.

So is it generally agreed upon that a 1/2 in. Riser will do the trick?

The mount for the red dot is just a little over 3" long. I'd assume I would need a riser at least that long...probably not too much longer.

Do I need to be looking for anything special when purchasing a riser? I wouldn't think there'd be a great advantage to an expensive one versus a cheap one...?

thanks,

Is that a magnified (2x) optic? I didn't see it listed in details on the Amazon link, but when I searched that item number it came up as a magnified 2x scope on other sellers listings. If that's the case then forget about co-witness unless it has a magnifier that screws off?

It is a 2x.

After getting to mess around with it more last night, I do not think I would like Cowitness at all.

Since that is settled, my problem still persists that the reticle itself is still positioned in the upper 1/3rd of the scope when I'm ADS. Can this be changed with just standard Elevation adjustments on the scope so that the reticle appears in the middle of the scope, or will a riser still be required?

Thanks,

Since it is 2x you can't co-witness... so that's that.

I think you'll be happy if you raise the optic so the center of the glass is about 1.5in from the top of the rail. Just measure where the center of your glass is now, and that will tell you all you need to know. My guess is that a 1/2in or 3/4in riser will be fine. Measure it and pick either one that you think you'll be more comfortable with... a bit higher or lower. It really doesn't matter a great deal, but the idea is to keep the scope at a relative height to AR sights so you maintain somewhat of a normal cheekweld for shooting an AR platform.
