Clean the barrel ?

Just a simple question, how often do you fellas clean the bore ?

I'm from the days when folks said more .22 barrels got hurt more from to much cleaning than to much shooting, IDK nowdays lol

That's a great question. .22 is such a dirty ctg. that after shooting I feel I need to wipe the gun down really well but I'm trying to just pull a bore snake through the barrel rather than get too aggressive with a cleaning rod.

I usually shoot 250-300 rounds when at the range, so I clean it after each session.

When shooting small game, I usually don't shoot a whole clip, so I give a visual inspection wait until I get at least a hundred rounds through it.

maybe every 500 rds or so, ill run my boresnake and clean off the bcg.

FWIW, there are about a dozen existing threads on the subject.

That said, I run a BoreSnake through the bore every 1k or so and blow out the action with my air compressor. I clean the bolt face and the interior of the upper at the same time.

I stopped using rods and patches on anything a couple of years ago - BoreSnakes for all firearms, including pistols and revolvers.

I clean the action after every trip to the range and I make sure to clean the pivot on the bolt catch.

Usually after every 500-1000 rounds I run a bore snake through the barrel.

I now use Bore Snakes on just about everything I own, just less frequently on the .22s

As with any firearm I own, I clean the barrel after every firing.

I clean my 15-22 after every range trip... i usualy run 400-600 rds in it so the Bolt is pretty dirty..


clean it all.... and Re-Load My Mags


And ready ta roll again

The 15-22 is the only one I never clean. Every once in a while I will run a bore snake down the barrel. I think I have only done a thorough cleaning a couple times and it has fired several thousand rounds.

I pull a patch soaked in Hoppes #9 tried to some monofilament nylon fishing line through the barrel after use. Usually one patch does the job. I never use a cleaning rod.

Done properly, frequent cleaning won't hurt anything. Trouble is, I don't think it really does much, either, in most cases. While .22 ammo can be dirty, and getting soot and powder bits out of the bore and action may be desireable, it seems to me that the waxy lube that .22s use, and which quickly builds in to a thin coat inside the bore, is most often a good thing. Once it reaches a certain point it doesn't seem to get any thicker, and removing it often causes a loss of accuracy until it builds up in the bore again.

I am speaking generally but, of course, every rifle is a law unto itself, and generalities are really the only way to discuss them as a whole.

Regardless of the firearm(s) I take to the range, they get cleaned and lubricated when I get home. Works for me.......

I clean my barrel when it needs it. However, my 15-22 gets used pretty much everyday.

If I was a weekend or once a month plinker, I would probably just clean it for something to do that's firearm related.

I clean all my guns after every trip to the range. I've only used my rod once. all the other times I've used the snake.

Another vote for "every time I shoot". The 15-22 is so much easier to clean than an M16\M4 it's downright relaxing.

I like to almost make a ceremony of cleaning my firearms so usually I'll give them a thorough cleaning within a day or so of use. sit down with a good movie for background noise and go to work.
