Default M&P 15-22 Ammo

Does anyone know the reason S&W does not recommend the following type ammo for the M&P 15-22?
Remington Golden Bullet , Target 22, Thunderbolt.
Winchester Wildcat.

Thanks,
Dennis

Because it was not found to be reliable in their testing. I know I have a lot of fail to feeds and fail to fires when using Golden Bullets in my other .22 rifles. I don't buy them, but a friend who could not get them to run in his semi-autos gave them to me. I tried to run them, and usually end up using them in the bolt guns and revolvers.

From the S&W manual:

"Through our testing, Smith & Wesson has also found that there are several brands and types of .22LR ammunition that do not perform consistently or reliably."

Please note that this is in THEIR testing. Many owners have posted on this forum that they use the ammo with no problems. Others have posted that they have had problems. FWIW, I put about 300 rounds of 10-year old Rem Thunderbolt through mine without a bobble.

The moral of the story is to see how it performs in your 15-22. That's the only thing that matters.

While it may be true to see how any ammo performs in your own rifle, I would recommend AGAINST using any ammo the firearm manufacturer says to specifically avoid if you value your warranty.

Trouble is with the Quality Control now. I have a few old bricks of Rem Thunderbolts and a couple old bricks of Wildcats I found in the back of a closet in old Military ammo cans. Old as in the price on the bricks from Pamida was $4.95 each. They ALL have been shooting great and zero hicups. The newer Thunderbolts suck in all my 22's. Glad I bought them in just a couple 50 round boxes to see how the news ones fired. What a waist. Heard a rumor that Rem had out sourced them off shore a few years back...

That's possible. Aguila bought all the tooling and machinery from Remington when they closed the Bridgeport, Connecticut plant several years ago. Perhaps that's where it's now produced, although Aguila is supposed to be pretty good.

Another greeting and welcome from Maine. You'll find lots of knowledge here and members eager to help. I've had no problems using Federal bulk from Wallyworld in both my 15-22's. But Remington Golden was a total washout in my Ruger Mark III. Ruger told me that they did not recommend Remington Golden in the Mark III after I contacted them about problems with this ammo. I relegated it to my .22 wheelguns where there were no problems.

[QUOTE=raveneap;136771821] I've had no problems using Federal bulk from Wallyworld in both my 15-22's. But Remington Golden was a total washout in my Ruger Mark III.

I've also had GREAT luck with Federal 550 bulk (been known to wipe out their shelf stock).

I don't even look at Remington's any more. Once upon a time, long long ago, they had great ammo. Only reason I might buy any is for the center fire brass. Even their CF bullets have fallen off.

No, I don't have any specific proof for this specific gun and ammo.

I'm not saying that S&W won't support the warranty on the 15-22 if you use ammo from the "not recommended" list, but to me it looks like they can legally opt to not repair a gun if the owner chooses to use ammunition from that list. I would err on the safe side and avoid any ammo on the list.

Always refer to your owner's manual and contact customer support for specifics.

The 15-22 owners manual didn't originally have lists of recommended/not recommended ammo. It was around mid 2010 when someone here noticed it being published. S&W states "primer sensitivity" as well as not recommending any subsonic ammo. My guess is that the "tests" and recommendations being put in the manual were a result of the great many returns of 15-22 suffering OOB issues. After S&W started installing new springs in the 15-22 then the OOB reports here pretty much stopped.

And every centerfire firearm that I have has a warning that the warranty is void in anything but factory ammo is used. 99 percent of what is fired in all of my centerfire firearms is my hand loads and in the three cases of needing warranty repairs, no one has ever asked me what I was shooting in it.

If S&W said Remington, et al was prohibited, I would agree with you, but that's not what the manual says. The manual says "not recommended." Also, the manual says nothing about the warranty being void if "not recommended" brands are used. It simple says "defective or improper" ammo. If you want to make "not recommended" equal to "improper", go for it. I can't find anything in the dictionary to let me make that leap.

Not to be a butt, but the "recommended ammo" is a bunch of hooey and/or much ado of nothing". Most any semi-automatic firearm will have ammo that it likes and doesn't like. You can run or attempt to run, any standard pressure commercially manufacturer ammo without harming the firearm. Their (S&W) intent in stating some ammo as "not recommended" is to buffer the fact that 22 rimfire semi-automatics have always been notorious for not running. Possibly they had reports sent in with returned rifles saying "this" ammo won't run.. Most likely it was the result of a back and forth with disgruntled owners. Do I believe that S&W researched all the different brands of ammo to find what would or would not run, not for a minute.

So, what to do.. You got to start somewhere, so pick something with a good rep and buy a box or two. If it runs, well then you know one that does. Expand from there as much as you like with others. It's all much the same as defensive round verification in a carry pistol.

Reading the "included with firearm" manual is often over-rated. Best to learn how a specific firearm functions and go from there. I wouldn't worry too much about voiding a warranty while doing standard stuff either. It's all just CYA on the part of the manufacturer.

For the M&P I started with CCI Tactical.. No reason other than it was CCI and sounded interesting. It runs just fine. Next I tried some Winchester M-22, it also ran fine. Both run fine in my MKIII's as well. If I can't find those for some reason, I'll try something else. It's not really a big deal..

Just my opinion.. Ron

Ron:

It's nice to know I'm not the only one who feels what you have expressed. Much of what is in owner's manuals is simply CYA verbiage demanded by their liability attorneys.

Today at the range, I watched a shooter who bought a 15-22 yesterday put something over 300 rounds of Rem Golden Bullets down range without a single problem. I guess his firearm likes it.

There-ya go; but we may be the minority these days. Seems to go against the grain on a lot of the forums and I didn't want to come across as a butt, but that's the deal. Cheers.. Ron

I shoot CCI and Federal lead bulk in both my M&P 22 and 15-22 with zero issues.

My 22A will eat anything.

My LCR 22 hates the CCI...loves the Federal.

I just bought a bulk box of Winchester M-22 ammo which is NOT listed on S&W's not "recommended ammo list". Haven't had a chance to make it to the range yet, has anyone shot this brand in their 15-22 yet? Good or bad?

Thanks,......Dennis

There's a half-dozen (or more) threads on the subject. Use the SEARCH function.

That said, M22 wasn't on the market when S&W was supposedly doing ammo tests. Add to that it is highly doubtful that S&W tested everything on the market at the time anyway. Many of us think they just listed what people complained, or did not complain, about in the recommended/not recommended list.

M22 is no better or worse than any other .22 LR ammo on the market. If it works fine in your 15-22, fine; use it. If not, use something else. Even all the stuff on the not recommended list is being used successfully by forum members.

Personally, I ignore such "recommendations" and have for years. YMMV.

Just curious with all the topic of ammo , someone had posted a link to an online ammo price comparison website , for finding the most current price and availability! Might be relevant today if someone has it! I unfortunately have lost my bookmark! Lol thanks !
