Default BEST AMMO

Just purchased my first gun ever and choose the 15-22 for many different reasons, but would love some feedback on the best ammo to use with this rifle. Signed up to gunbroker.com and was going to buy a bunch of ammo in one quick swoop but want to buy good stuff. ALso and forgive my newbie question what is difference between the different grains ie 34 or 40 and is one better for this rifle then the other

Default NEWBIE ?'S

If ya don't know ask, simple. No such thing as a stupid ? Worse is acting like you do know & don't. Grains(gr's) are a measure of weight. app 15.47? to the gram & in your case refer to the weight of bullet (the projectile) part of the cartridge, or round. gun terminology gets a bit sloppy and confusing at times, don't sweat it. As for what ammo to buy, It's kind of more like what can you find and how much are you willing to pay. My new to me 15-22 works with ANY normal to high velocity stuff I've used. The only problems were with sub sonic, low velocity (slow moving) stuff. What's gonna shoot best in YOUR gun? you will have to try several & tell us. And price? Figure out your own "line in the sand price", the absolute top price you will pay and not budge from, mine is 8 cents per, and have found some recently for 1/2 that. Make sure they are labeled long rifle, NOT shorts, longs, cb's, etc. have fun be safe & enjoy.

Wish i could help but i havent been able to go out with my 15-22 yet, still sits in box not fired. From what i hear your best bet is CCI mini mags.

I've had good luck & zero issues with CCI MiniMag, Aguila SuperExtra Standard Velocity, And Winchester M22. Remington Golden Bullet also fired fine though rather smoky.

What is the intended purpose? General plinking/paper punching?

Now I'm not trying to be a jerk, but no one know what is the best ammo for your particular rifle. We can recommend brands that have worked for ours but every rifle, even if they are the same model are a little different.

That said, I've had great luck with Federal Champion blue box bulk in fact I consider it excellent, CCI Minimags (although the extra price doesnt justify the small performance gain for me vs Federal, your mileage may very), and Winchester M22 has also been pretty consistent for me.

Now I've also had good luck with Golden Bullets, but a lot of people here may not have had the same experiences, hence you'll have to come up with your own judgment.

The (34) 36gr. are likely 'hollow points', compared to the 40gr. which are solid. In the case of 22LR there isn't much difference as I doubt the HP will expand much differently to the solid, it's just too small to have much effect.

I would suggest Federal Champion bulk packs (or CCI Mini Mags if you don't mind spending a bit more).

Each rifle is different, some may not like certain brands so grab a few different options and test them out. Then you'll be good to go on getting some bulk. You'll need plenty . Enjoy!

Mine has an affinity for Federal Automatch and CCI ammo, but aside from the ChootEms variety, which seem to cause some hiccups, it pretty much eats anything.

Mine has cycled everything I've put through it with no problems. I personally prefer CCI, but they are somewhat more costly.

Default 22 ammo

My first choice, though not "THE BEST" would be the old Federal standard velocity bulk pack, but haven't seen them since the election. I've seen new ones designed with words like tactical and other nonsense, cci, win, ely, aguilla etc. What I've seen the most of for the best prices are my least favorite Remington thunderbolts and goldens. Keep looking everywhere, some lgs may tell you over the phone if they know & like you. I've got 8 diff brands for a total of under 3,000 rounds, use a lot of them, and am constantly looking. stock up on mags too. 5 are req for some comp's.

I have picked up several boxes recently at Cabelas (online), but they don't last long.

The CCI® Swamp People (Chootem's) are also excellent, these have been available at Gander Mtn recently.

Wikiarms is a good resource to find cheap ammo. Good luck.

Keep your eye on Gunbot, they sometimes have good deals popping, but you got to be fast:

GunBot 22lr rimfire ammo

Grains (36/40)
Ammo (CCI MiniMags, Fed Bulk, and lately Remington Gold Buckets from Gander Mountain +/- .05 per round)

Enjoy..........

To reiterate, you need to fire several different kinds of ammo out of your weapon and determine what it likes best, and what you like best, for your intended purpose.

THIS thread is an excellent resource.

The 15-22 as a whole doesn't seem terribly finicky. Good Luck, and keep us posted.

Have you checked your local walmarts? Try hitting a few stores twice a week and you'll probably stumble on some. There used to be an app that showed realtime inventory but for the past month it has been useless (for me). Check the ammo thread in this forum constantly and be ready to jump (you should already have an account set up at Gander and Cabelas).

To answer your question and echo what most have recommended:
1) CCI minimags either 36 or 40 gr, CCI AR 40gr 375 box (virtually identical to 40gr minimags) or Chootems in 375 (minimag 36gr), or Blazers.
2) Winchester M*22
3) Remington Golden bullets (actually my favorite but the spray on brass coating is like graphite and gets on everything, it acts as a dry lubricant).
4) Federal bulk

My 2013 15-22 shoots everything. My 2012 M&P22 pistol is finicky.

I have two 15-22 that are not the least bit concerned what I stuff in them. Currently I am shooting 30+ year old stuff...ever heard of Revelation? My guns just ate a brick of it with only a few FTF and they would not go off in my M&P pistol either. The next brick is a black box with Montgomery Ward written on it, we will see if that too is no problem. I also bought a case of Aguila Golden Eagle target from CMP and it is accurate and well made ammo, not a FTF with it.

I ordered a 2100 Federal bulk pack (4 -525's) in a metal storage can from Cabela's in late September for $99 + shipping. Thats high by historic standards, but not bad currently.

I got the tip from the thread on here on in stock ammo.

You've been given good advice. Might I just add best right now is whatever you can get. Each firearm has a preference on what it likes best, and what it doesn't like. One rifle will shoot what some conceder junk and others will not. You will need to try different brands to find out what your firearm likes best as to function and accuracy, when it comes available. Gunbot is a good place to look as stated but when you buy through the mail shipping add lots to it unless you find a coupon for free shipping. Cabelas, Gander Mountain, Bas Pro, Wal-Mart are hit and miss but they do get it in every so often. Hopefully they will be stocked for black Friday sales.

Word of warning about buying older ammo on gunbroker, Remington had a recall in July and there could be some still out there.T-bolt notice-final 7-30-13 (3).pdf This was for the 22 Thunderbolt ammo.

P.S. you didn't state what model you bought if it's a performance center model you can't shoot stingers in it. The manual has recommendations on what to shoot and what not to shoot. These are recommendation and don't be afraid to try them, your rifle might like them just don't use stingers in a Performance Center Model. Buy and shoot what you can find now and after it becomes availed buy what works best.

Also sometimes if we know what state you live in someone might be able to tell you where you can buy local.

I almost agree with u on this.......but

I had about 6 boxes of the 375rd Mini-Mags (Troy Landry) and believe it or not. One of those boxes was full of ****. More problems out of that box than ive ever had in a single box of anything and that includes the **** boxes of Remington Thunderbolt and Gold Bullets.......However, the other 5 boxes of that particular CCI shot just fine.

I guess it was just a bad box. I've had it happen before with other brands. But to see CCI do it, almost brought a tear to my eye. After seeing this, i now believe that these days every company is letting things slip through their fingers from time to time.

My experience has been that CCI, the Mini-Mags for preference, are the easiest-to-digest for almost any gun. When I can get them, I usually shoot M-Ms for the first few hundred rounds as a sort of a "break-in" period (not all guns require them), then try other things. The problem is, since the onset of the madness Mini-Mags have been very hard to get and very expensive. If I can't find them, my preference is for CCI standard velocity, Fiocchi and Aguila.

Believe it or not, mine loves the Eley Sport the best (dirty though). American Eagle, CCI blazer, CCI mini mags do well also. Remington is a no no.

THE BEST???!!

Winchester 1300 FPS, 40 grain and they come in a long red plastic slider box.

My next favorite is 40 grain Winchester M-22, then CCI mini mags.

So long as you shoot copper plated ammo you shouldn't have much trouble.

At this point, try anything you can find! Mine has had a steady diet of CCI Standard and has been happy with it, but I've got to stop using up my bullseye league stash. Scored two bulk packs of Federal today at the LGS, gonna see how it likes them this weekend.
