Default Homemade Bumpfire Stock! Yay or Nay

After seeing videos of the slide-fire stock on the M&P 15-22 I thought to myself wow that's cool but not $325 cool and what a ugly stock it is! So I kept searching and came upon ar15.com site and found a guy who built his own with only being a few months old I figure I can do this cuz im good with this fabricating stuff but anyways my questions is, Should I or Should'nt because the Slide-fire is Legal and where I live I have to have my Stock pinned and with slidefire its not pinned but doesn't collapse all the way so I guess its legal. Now if I build my own will it be legal? its almost the same concept but built differently! Before we get into a Copyright infringement argument its all talked about on that site and everything is fine apparently.
My idea is rather simple to make and I will be doing 1 of 2 ways, which im undecided because 1 way is to change the grip and other is to wrap around the original grip. I would like more info from you guys who are more knowledgeable with the laws and the gun itself!
Question 1. Will my gun being stock work without modifying the trigger? I've seen videos claiming its stock and working fine!!
Question 2. Will I be risking it having the stock unpinned even though its considered a fixed position? On the other site he was approached by the ATF and they walked away but another guy they too his gun but eventually got it back!

That being said, After reading many posts on this forum and with all the knowledgeable & friendly people, should I go through with this and show my progress incase someone else would like to do the same?

I would ask the nearest ATF office. Better to be safe than sorry.

Default Bumpfire reply

I am going to say that if you are in an compliant state the answer is a sure NO. You can consult your local ATF like advised but before using that time take a look at the regulations from the NFA. While it is a homemade product it would not fall under a AOW and it is not monitored by the powers that be over in DC. They would surely look at this as a form of Mass Destruction weapon even without the select fire button. Plus coming up on Black Friday I am almost sure with the sales that have been lacking on them (even though we see the youtube videos) the price will be going down before end of year.

New to me. I have never heard of a pinned stock before. If you don't mind me asking what state, country do you reside in.
The idea of a low dollar bumpfire has some appeal. I have been looking for a used ar siding stock also. Thought bondo and JB weld would help with the modified grip.

Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York (at least) require a stock to be pinned is place so it not easily adjustable.

In in NY where gun laws suck! Trust me once you see how easy it can be done you might be all over it. If your thinking about over the grip this stuff called Kydex, Youtube it! its what they make a lot of pistol belt holders from!!!!

But the Slide-fire is legal in NY which is not pinned!

It's legal here, too. While the slidefire does move slightly, it does not make the stock adjustable. That is the purpose of pinning - non-adjustibility.

Default Homemade Bump Fire

I am not sure that state law should be your biggest concern, I would be more concerned with the ATF. The Slidefire people submitted their product to the ATF and got a certificate, included with each unit, that states it is compliant with Federal law. That being said, you have to decide if this is a battle you would be willing to commit your dollars to. While this should be easy, I see a host of potential problems that could make life very difficult. ATF has, in the past, certified bump fire devices and then revoked the certification after the fact and forced owners to relinquish their device. Having said all that, it is an interesting project. As you stated, $325 for the Slidefire has always seemed high to me.

If it were me and you can make it cheaply I'd be very tempted to just make it. Then if ATF come knocking you can point out that it's the same as a product that's already available and you just made it yourself for fun but they are free to take the stock off and take it if they want until they've checked into it as you don't want to be accidentaly doing something wrong. Worst case you loose your contraption. Best case you get it back with an OK from the powers that be.

after reading over 13 long pages full of another forum this is what this guy went through! The only part that was not answered is a legal question! Slide-Fire provides a piece of paper saying this product protected and Tested by the ATF and is legal BLAH BLAH BLAH, Well his Do it yourselfer was not tested by the ATF but is the same contraption.
The guy who made his own is not looking to make any money off them just didn't want to pay the outrageous price of one you can buy, which I think is outrageous too!
I always been the type of guy loved to save a buck if you could DIY I guess. With other people showing their ideas and progress I was intrigued!!!!

Unhappy

Sooner or later one of these bump fire stocks is going to be used in the commission of a crime such as a drive by shooting. How long do you think it will be before it becomes illegal? This kind of thing will just attract attention which we do not need.

Yes most likely it will, that's why it can be easily undone if it gets banned or what not. I'm not worried but the people at Slide-fire solutions my get pissed! Many other people, including me don't wanna pay the outrageous price for alittle extra fun.
If these people didn't think it was fun they never would of purchased a slide-fire!

SlideFire in a state with a 10-round magazine restriction? I can think of several words to describe that combination and none of them are complimentary.

You can learn to bump fire without any silly stocks, rubber bands or belt loops required.

No, worst case you are convicted of a federal felony, sentenced to 10 years in federal prison, fined $250,000, and lose your right to own firearms for the rest of your life.
That would be the worst case.

are you sure you know what bump fire is?

I see your point if you made it fully automatic by holding the trigger down!!! Other then that no!

He's referring to home-brewing something that is not BATFE approved, I am sure, without jumping through all the required hoops.

Yes.

Are you sure you know what the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives is?
Are you sure you know their colorful history on prosecuting hazy interpretations of 26 U.S.C. ch. 53?
Are you sure you understand the definition of "worst case"?
