Default How closely related?

I got my wife to order the Troy AR from Dicks that was on sale a couple days ago. The M&P 15-22 is the only gun I have any experience with. My question is how much difference will there be in breaking down the rifle and cleaning it? Will there be extra parts since its not a .22? I am already a little sad that each bullet is about 11x more expensive than my .22

Thanks for the help guys.

The real AR experts will chime in, I'm sure, but the the Bolt Carrier Group in an AR isn't even remotely related to the BGC in the 15-22. Much more complicated and much harder to clean, from everything I have seen. And yea, there are a lot more parts.

For field stripping, the BCG breaks down into 5 parts. Other than that, not much difference overall. Look up some disassembly videos on YouTube and when you get the new rifle, familiarize yourself with the BCG details and how the parts function together.

They take a lot longer to clean thoroughly. Buy a bore snake to help with the barrel. There is a set of chamber brushes I use that also will take some time off. It is a great rifle that is very fun. Just more work.

It's not as bad as you might think cleaning the AR's. Just like any weapon. Shoot it clean it. Keeps the gunk down and MUCH easier to clean the next time when you start with a "fresh cleaned" weapon from the first time shooting and you aren't baking on old gunk time after time. Hearing "I never clean my weapon until it needs it" is stupid and they have never relied on it to save their life.

shivdaddy, the basics of breaking it down are similar, but yeah, the AR15 is more complicated to clean. mainly the bolt carrier group.

My situation is opposite of yours. Being former military, I am comfortable with the M-16A1 and now my AR15. I just bought a 15-22, so I don't understand how to clean the bolt carrier group. It shouldn't be hard to figure out. Not many parts to it. I know there must be videos around.

anyways, i found atactv very informative when learning to clean my AK47 variant and Glock. it has a LOT of other useful information as well including how to deal with malfunctions. Atac

I learned a lot of new stuff and was able to review things I learned in the past. If you don't know of this site, I think you will find it very interesting.

here is a link to where they show how to clean the AR-15 type rifles. it starts from the third video down. although, in the videos, they take the entire lower assembly apart, which is more than you would have to do for basic cleaning. Atac

It's really easy.

Remove the BCG
Lift off the charging handle (it pretty much falls off)
Remove the recoil spring and recoil spring guide
Slide the bolt off the rails
Clean all the various parts to your satisfaction
Lubricate the rails
Re-assemble in reverse order

The 15-22 isn't run wet, like many ARs. You just need some light lube on the rails. The two areas that do need specific attention is the bolt face (especially around the extractor) and the breech face. Both will gunk up in a hurry.

It's a WHOLE lot easier than cleaning the bolt and chamber on an AR15 or M16.

thanks. yeah, after i made my previous post, i figured out how to take it apart. thanks for the advice about not running it wet and where to pay attention to. i have never had a rim-fire gun before so this is all a new experience for me.

i can't go to the range because i am stuck at home recovering from spinal surgery. i never even got to shoot my 15-22 yet. so it is great that i can learn a lot of stuff in the meantime.

sorry to OP for the deviation.

Have 'em wheel you out to the range! You can shoot the 15-22 sitting or laying on your back!

Yea. I vote for this!!!

The oldest grandson is getting one for Christmas but he'll have to shoot from a wheelchair for a while. He's having reconstructive foot surgery two weeks before his December 27th birthday.

Thank you. He has to have both arches rebuilt; he is in constant pain. It's going to be tough to keep him off the foot until it heals - and then then do the other one. He's 16 and wears a size 16 shoe!!!

Nope - and several shades paler.

Thanks for the good wishes. He is so anxious to get both surgeries over with.
