Brand New MP15-22 Owner in AZ
Hi all,
Just bought my S&W rifle on Black Friday at Sportmen's Warehouse. It has the iron sights, threaded barrel w/compensator, and 25 round magazine. I just ordered 2 extra 25 rd mags from Midway. I have been wanting one of these for months and kept going back and forth with some of the other AR 22 Rifles, but came back to this one after so many good reviews. I haven't fired it yet, but I did buy a cleaning kit already. Not sure what accessories I want to put on it yet? I'm not sure if I want to put a scope on it or not, I think that's part of the fun in getting it zeroed in with the iron sights. I've seen several that have all the accessories on it, but to me that is overkill, with the flashlights, lasers, etc.

Thanks, I was thinking of buying one of those bipods. Not so much for me, but for my kids if they want to shoot it also. I live out of city limits but don't know anywhere close where it's legal to shoot outside of a gun range. There is a range close by, which requires glasses/ear protection for all shooters/observers, plus the range fees. So some of the 1st purchases I'll be making are glasses/ear protection, targets and ammo. Maybe later on down the road, I'll look at adding accessories, but rather have funtional items than cosmetic.

No matter where you shoot, eye and ear protection should be mandatory for everyone. Nothing more pitiful than a kid with an eye patch. Especially when you have to buy the parrot and peg leg to go with it. ARRRRGH.

SGTSteve,
Recently got my 15-22 and have been shooting it a lot with different brands of ammo. It does not seem to be to picky as long as its not lead. You will have tons of fun with it. Stock up on plenty of ammo as it goes quick when the kids get there turn. You may even get to shoot it!!!!

Welcome Steve, I too went out and bought a(nother) 15-22 at Sportman's Warehouse on Black Friday....the one in Mesa.
It was a madhouse in there, but I stuck it out and got my rifle.
Congrats on your purchase, hope to see you at the Rio Salado Range (in Mesa) for the 'Tactical .22' match tomorrow night. If you don't want to shoot at least come out, check out the matches and say hello to me and Rich (aguablanco).

Welcome to the club, more mags & ammo then have fun. If the kids are going to shoot it from the prone position I'd recommend a couple of the short 10-round mags, my grandson had trouble trying to clear the ground with the 25-rounders.

Welcome from down Chandler way Sgt Steve!
You and your kids will most definitely enjoy that rifle! AR15 style rifles are addictive! I think I'm up to 4 at the moment... time will tell if I get the bug to go to 5.
Lots of places outside of town to shoot in this state... just need to find Federal land where it's not specifically restricted. Only thing to avoid is Reservation land. They typically don't like people shooting anywhere near one of the reservations.
If you're up on the north side of town I'm told there are a number of desert shooting spots out towards Prescott. Also several towards Fountain Hills.

Welcome from Oregon, formerly of Tucson. You will put things on and take things off as your "needs" change. Buy some, sell some and trade when you can.
Oh yeah, eye and ear protection for everybody, every time.

Thanks guys/gals! I'm from Tucson btw....
Oh yeah I know ear protection/glasses are a must! I was just stating that takes priority over buying accessories, want to be able to shoot it even if it is stock. I have two 25 rd mags on the way, so I'll have three 25 rounders all together. I saw the thread on here about the new mag that is being developed. I may buy a couple of those if they ever make it into production. A little background on myself, I was active Navy from 92-99, Army National Guard from 00-05 (incl 1 deployment to Afghanistan), and Navy Reserve from 05-Present. I am looking at retiring soon from the military, still got a long time to go with my civilian job. I work for a Defense Weapons contractor (Raytheon) here in Tucson.

oh yeah, about how many rounds have you all put through one of these before cleaning? I'll be cleaning it everytime, just curious as to what point these things need to be broken down. Also, has anyone removed the upper receiver/pin? I know the manual doesn't recommend it, but it does appear to come apart like the real AR's?

The manual really says that? OOPs , I've been taking mine down like a real AR15 since mine was new....never had a problem. Not sure what it could hurt by breaking it down into 2 pieces, especially since it's made just like an AR15. Not sure I would store it separated, but breaking it down for cleaning should be no problem at all.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong on this.

Well, it doesn't say that they don't recommend it, it's just not listed in the manual as a step to take it down and I believe it says something to the effect advising not to take down further as described in the manual. I just thought that was odd, as I would think it would be easier to clean with the upper removed. Do you run a wire brush through yours? I just ordered 3750 rds of the new CCI AR Tactical .22lr. Good sale online, $16 for 375 rds, plus s/h. bought 10 boxes.

I take mine completely apart at every cleaning. Never had a problem. Just makes it easier to work on.

thanks for the reply Aqua. Do you run a wire brush through your barrel? Not sure if that is recommended on these 22's or just run patches through it?

I generally put 500+ rounds downrange any time I go out. Returning home I load all the magazines, run a BoreSnake through the barrel three times, blow out the lower with an air compressor, and clean the bolt face and breech face. I check the lube on the BCG rails and put a single drop of CLP on the bolt-latch/lower junction.
I remove the upper from the lower every time. There's no particular reason not to, the info in the manual notwithstanding.

BoreSnake. Much better and faster than patches. I use a proper sized BoreSnake on all my firearms. I haven't used a cleaning rod and patches since the BoreSnake came out.
The only time I would mess with patches is if I had a problem with copper fouling, and that doesn't happen with .22 LR.

I run a bore snake through my barrel, and it has a built in wire brush. 2 times through the barrel and it's good to go.
