Remington Bucket O Bullets quality?

I've seen Remington get some not so good reviews here, but my LGS has Remington 1400 Hollow Point Rd. buckets on sale for 55 bucks.

Before I buy one or two I wanted to see if the S&W M&P 15-22 shoots these well or if I'm better of staying away from them.

They are dirty. But at this point. Get what you can. Ammo is getting hard to get at this point. Compared to federal bulk ammo I have shot over 2000 rounds and everything was alot cleaner than shooting 500 golden bullets.

Gopher Slayer 12-27-2012 11:13 AM

This is what your range will look like if you use those.

JUST KIDDING

Some people say they have good luck with them. Not me. They haven't worked well in any of my semi autos.

Try a smaller box of Golden Bullets if you can so you don't end up with a bucket o' junk.

magnetik 12-27-2012 11:16 AM

but they say "new and improved!" lol they just might take out the gun and not the range.

Beuford T. Rimfire 12-27-2012 11:18 AM

I shoot these in a revolver, but my 15-22 doesn't seem to like them. They may feed just fine in your rifle, but they're definately not a favorite of people on this forum. If you have something other than the 15-22 like a revolver or bolt gun to shoot them from, give them a try.

Long ago, they were premium items. Right up at the top of what you could buy here in the US, on a par with Super-X. But that was back in the 1960s. I still have maybe 5 boxes of those. Its my accuracy standard with my .22 rifle, the one I've had since 1966. That was the first time I ever had enough money to actually buy different brands and shoot for accuracy. My Browning loved the stuff (and it was good with the hollowpoints, too.) I couldn't afford target ammo.

Things have changed over the years. I don't know what has happened to the brand, but you can and should test it for yourself. Buy 100 (2 boxes) of them and head out. Fire them at a real target. Then keep track of any misfires if you have them. I always had along 2 pairs of pliers. I'd then grip the bullet with one set and the case with the other. Then I'd bend the thing. The bullet smears out. Dump the powder on the nearest grass, its good fertilizer. Now look inside down at the rim. A live shell should have a colored priming compound spun into the rim so when the firing pin hits it, it crushes the compound and sets off the cartridge.

What you'll find with almost any brand is the absence of compound in the dud rounds. What many shooters have been finding is way more duds with Remington than with the other brands. CCI has been getting good reviews over the last few years. I personally prefer Federal bulk packs. Remember cost is a big factor. Federals as purchased at WalMart are the low price leader. CCI is the high price spread. They seem to have very good quality control and you pay for that.

I've even considered the idea that maybe Remington runs its machines faster than the other companies. Maybe the priming compound doesn't have the time to get to the rim, or the machine is stingy and doesn't drop any. Regardless, things do change over time. Since I found the Remingtons to be very dependable 40+ years ago, something is different today. YMMV. I'd suggest to anyone that they buy a sample of anything they want to fire and see how it works. Just don't be surprised if you get duds. And if you don't, be sure to come back here and tell us. Even the lot number might be interesting.

You're right. I didn't see that.

I wonder if the 500rnd packs are "new and improved". I might have to try it myself. If it doesn't work well, I have a 77/22 that will eat it up.

TheMaineEvent 12-27-2012 11:39 AM

Good info so thank you for the replies. I think I'll stay away from these for now. My store also has Winchester 555 rd hollow points packs on sale so I'll pick up some of those instead.

I've had bad experiences with Winchester 555 ammo. My Brother brought his Sig Mosquito and two boxes of 555 over (I don't live in town) and I don't think it got through a single magazine without a FTFeed. I know many don't like it, but I let him use my Golden Bullets in the 225 pack from Walmart and it cycled flawlessly. My SR22P cycles flawlessly with the GB too and had several hiccups with the 555. I've never bought the "bucket", but if you're interested and its available (I can't find any rim-fire except tiny boxes locally) try the smaller box from Walmart first and see if it works in your particular firearm. I'd also try a smaller Winchester box first too before I'd buy hundreds or thousands of rounds that don't cycle. Of course for others that use a bolt-action or a revolver it probably doesn't matter as much, if at all, but semi-auto rifles and pistols all seem to act differently with the same ammo.

JohnK 12-27-2012 01:04 PM

My stash of Remingtons, from the last few years, are note worthy.

Each round, (if it fires) has a different sound. Crack, pop, blub, hiss, fart, you get the idea.

Only have a few 50 round boxes left, will throw them in one of my deep ponds.

OliRage 12-27-2012 01:19 PM

They're terrible.
Incredibly filthy.
Your fingers will turn gold after loading the fist magazine.
I would not recommend.....unless you're prepping.

Quark 12-27-2012 02:09 PM

In my experience they are great at not being reliable. I struggled to use the box that I bought in my revolver. Inaccurate, dirty, FTFs, and squibs.

armory 12-27-2012 03:33 PM

Won't cycle in my M&P 15-22 or my Ruger 10-22.
If you have a revolver, they work fine.

Torakan 12-27-2012 04:31 PM

I shoot them thru my Kimber 1911 22 conversion kit,my USGI M16 conversion kit, and my S&W 422 with no problems. Havnt tried them in my 15-22 yet but will this weekend.

ss409cid 12-27-2012 06:48 PM

I ran a couple of mags of them thru mine yesterday. No problem. Makes me mad that I let a friend have my other bucket.....:)

Harrison 12-27-2012 07:18 PM

I shot some in my 1885 Winchester low wall and they didn't seem any dirtier than most other 22s.. They were actually pretty accurate out to 50 yards, but accuracy fell off at 100. I think I'll stick to either Wolf Match, or the runner up Federal Auto match. For serious work Lapua has some really accurate 22 ammo.

A little off topic, but I am considering a Kimber Rimfire Target later this year. I believe it is like your conversion kit, just with the lower included. Is it very picky about ammunition?

Ghost_Soldier 12-27-2012 07:47 PM

They work just fine in my 15-22, luckily my rifle hasn't been picky with ammo in over 10,000 rounds. Though I typically use federal 550 bulk boxes, sometimes remington is all that's in stock. I've used probably 3-4,000 rounds of the remington golden bullets and the only problems I've had are your typical primer problems with .22lr ammo.

They are just as dirty as any other .22lr ammo from my experience.

Majorlk 12-27-2012 08:28 PM

It's like any other ammo - try it and see what happens instead of depending upon the Internet. :)

BP_Z28 12-27-2012 09:03 PM

To me..

Remington bucket of bullets and quality do not belong in the same sentence. For my 15-22 at least. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me :)

Lager 12-27-2012 10:28 PM

I donno, the Goldens I bought recently seem to work just fine in 15-22. Never had a failure to fire ion the about 700 I fed thru it so far.
I did have some that felt weaker when fired, but it still cycled.
My wifes Ruger Mk3 will have a failure to ignite about every 100 rounds using the Goldens. Maybe the 15-22 wacks the primer harder? I donno.
Either way,I would buy them.
Will reserve my Federals for comp days, when I know every round must be accurate and must go off when I squeeze the bang lever.

As long as you use hotter stuff it works fine. Its a slick set up to allow practice with less expensive ammo.

Bucket of Bullets

I bought two buckets for my wife to use in her Browning Buckmark Contour pistol. They work great for her with no issues. I clean all the guns, so dirty is not an issue for her...Ha.. I'll take all "bucket of bullets" that that nobody wants...

I don't know if these are the same but I had a gunsmith and former competitive shooter tell me to stay away from any and all Remington .22 ammo. Personally I buy the Federal bulk (no problems ever) and some CCI in my 317 that is my wife's.

Lager 12-28-2012 10:11 PM

You know whats funny? We sit here and type in what ammo we think is best.
When 22 LR seems to be short supply and we are still being picky?
Buy what you can and consider yourself lucky.
For the most part, most of us are just plinkers. We shoot cans, maybe some paper.
Hopefully we dont rely on our 15-22 as a home defense weapon so if we have a none fire every now and then? Just jack the slide and try again.
Message is, when ammo choices are small.Buy what you can.

rburg 12-28-2012 10:48 PM

Yes, ammo is getting a little harder to find. At today's gun show they were selling the buckets for $65 each. That's for 1400 rounds. If you can find Walmart Federal 550s, they're priced at just under $20. That same $65 will buy you over 1650 of those. For the guy buying at $55, it might not be as bad a price comparison. Do the math at price per shot. I certainly wouldn't pay a premium just to get the bucket.

whooosah 01-04-2013 12:24 AM

I just went to the range today and picked up the last box of remington golden bullet 525 pack. They worked pretty good in my 15-22 all cycled and no problems. Some of them did sound a little different than others but it did the job.

Lager 01-04-2013 10:39 PM

If you watch someone else shoot yer gun using the Rem Goldens, some rounds produce a good amount of smoke from the receiver. They still went bang.Might have been a extra amount of Cow manure rem thru in there as filler.
Joking of course, but some rounds are pretty smokey.
I seem to get a LOT of grit in the action as compared to other brands also. No biggey especially if thats all I can find or have on hand.
