converting an Ar1522 to a .223
Hi.
I'm sure this has been covered before, but I'm new to the forum and tried digging through the threads with no luck.
Someone mentioned to me that a S&W AR 1522 can be converted to a .223 by attaching a .223 upper to the AR 1522 lower portion.
Is there any validity to this? is is that simple?
Thanks

One thing that is simple. Just going out and buying a seperate .223
The 15-22 was made to have fun, plink, target, competition on the cheap. Not the other way around
But I have no idea on your original question. I am assuming not.

That's what I was thinking too. I was just surprised by what my buddy said.
Thanks for the info. The easiest thing would be to just go out and buy the .223
Thanks.

Not to mention the whole buffer tube/spring for a .223 is not going to work in the 15-22 lower.

There are polymer lowers on the market that will work with standard uppers. However, the 15-22 will not.

The take down pins on the 15-22 have a different spacing than the AR15 and and a few other things that will not allow an AR15 upper to work with it.

I may be wrong, but I recall reading that the 15-22 lower receiver is a little wider than a standard AR-15 along with the take down pin spacing being different.

Read that on this forum. I don't remember where, or who posted it, but I can't take the credit for knowing that.

The entire 15-22 was designed to prevent such a modification.

There is no way, no how any .223 upper will fit or work on a 15-22 lower, or the other way around.

No you can not put a .223/5.56 upper on a m&p 15-22 lower. Doing such would cause the shooter serious injury. Since the buffer tube is sealed off the bolt recoil would pretty much explode the plastic tube that is right next to your face. Plastic shrapnel in the face is no good for anyone. Hence wh:y none of the mating parts fitting together.

"NOT BASHING THE 15/22" but isn't the Composite material they used semi light duty stuff? Comparing it to my Glock the 15/22 did not feel as sturdy. I could be completely wrong thought and it might be as tough as nails.
This is just my thinking but I would not try taking any lower caliber firearm and converting it to a higher caliber firearm.
Take some 40cal firearms they can be converted to 9mm with a simple barrel swap. The 99% of the time the same cant be done with a 9mm to 40 conversion

Thank you to everyone who took the time to respond. Thought it sounded crazy, just wanted to run it by the group, in case I was missing something.

Composite has come a long way, they even have composite lowers for .223's now as well. Sales guy told me it was the same composite as in the glock, but I I can't verify the validity of that. It probably feels weaker because it's a larger area of polymer and thinner so it acts different.
