NYS and slip on Flash Suppressor
Does anyone know if it is legal to add a slip on Flash Suppressor to my M&P 15-22. I am looking at the type that slip over the end of barrel and held on with set screws? I am thinking of purchasing one but do not what to violate the strick NYS laws.
All the M&P 15-22 I have seen in gun shops here in NY have un-threaded barels and no flash suppressors.
Thanks

Considering this, I would guess the answer to your question is NO.

I would take that as a no as well. There's a reason you can't buy them installed on the guns.

A flash suppressor is illegal. A Compensator or muzzle break is OK. A break is used to control the recoil, not suppress the flash, and is usually identified by slots that are on the top half of the barrel.
If you buy and install a break, be sure to keep the packaging that describes it as such, so you can show it to the officer, because he probably won't know the difference anyway. OTOH, you'll probably never get approched by an officer anyway, and if you do he'll probably be more interested in the capacity of the magazine.

Just a nit-pic ...
It's a muzzle BRAKE, not break.
And a compensator is not the same as a muzzle brake. A compensator reduces muzzle rise; a brake counteracts recoil. There are some that claim to do both, however. Neither one reduces muzzle flash. In fact, the flash from brakes is often more pronounced than from a plain barrel, due to burning gasses being deflected to the sides.

Regarding NYS law. Forget the word compensator. Some compensators may be legal but the law says no flash suppressor. For example a standard A2 comp is illegal as it is also a flash suppressor. Be careful buying stuff based on Internet law advice.

Unless someone has changed the nomenclature, the A2 IS listed as a flash suppressor, not a compensator.
You are absolutely correct about Internet law advice.

It has the relevant statutes listed. You cannot have a flash suppressor in NY with the 15-22. Since the 15-22 comes with a pistol grip you cannot have anything else added to it. Hence the reason the gun comes with a pinned stock and no flash suppressor, if it did it would be considered an assault weapon.

Not denying any of that. Just saying that WP does NO research on its own. All its information comes from people like you and me posting to it. It is not a reliable source of information.
