M&P 15-22 Tests
Tonight my son and I took our new M&P 15-22 to the indoor range to document the different sighting systems. I swapped out the standard rear sight for a UTG Carry Handle sight. It has two apertures, and I tested each one at 25 yards. I also have a very cheap BSA Four Reticle Red-Dot sight mounted on the carry handle.
BSA Reticles
I fired ten shots using all six sighting systems at 25 yards. The ammunition used was CCI Tactical 40gr. The carry handle rail is "see through", so I did all this testing with the red-dot installed. Below are my results . . . .
UTG Carry Handle - Small Aperture
UTG Carry Handle - Large Aperture
The aperture was so large that it did not do a good job of focusing in the front sight like the small aperture does. In fact, with my old eyes, the front sight was just a blur when I took these shots. That’s why I added the red-dot.
BSA Four Reticle Red-Dot – 2 MOA Dot
My old eyes saw two dots side by side touching each other (my son saw only one).
BSA Four Reticle Red-Dot – Crosshair
BSA Four Reticle Red-Dot – Circle Cross
BSA Four Reticle Red-Dot – Circle Dot
I then took the red-dot sight off so that my son could fire the rifle in its most basic form.
He shot a magazine and it was good, but a little spread out. I tried it again to see if the sights had moved and fired ten shots . . . .
I then put the red-dot back on and let him experiment with the different reticles and power levels. When he was finished, I took the last fifteen shots and used the crosshair just to see if the red-dot had held zero after taking it off and putting it back on . . . .
All in all we had a great time and I’m real happy with the accuracy using the standard sights (small aperture) and the red-dot crosshair.

It's great to read about a father and son going to the range.
Sounds like you are having a great time together.

RG,
If I may ask?
You were able to use the stock 15-22 front sight with the aperture sight on the UTG handle?
I was hoping to someday get a carry handle for mine but thought I'd have to replace the front sight as well.
Thanks!

That's cool sharing shooting with your son. Optics just dominate modern arms, you just gotta put something on that brand new rifle cause the irons aren't good for anything....or at least many think that way. I was at the range yesterday with steel targets set up at 25, 50 and 75 yards. The Eotech is great inside 50 yards, especially for speed but I was actually blown away with how consistently I was smacking the plates at 50 and 75 yards using the Magpul flip up back up sights. God I love shooting this rifle!

Tempest,
I didn't know if perhaps he had replaced the front sight when he attached the carry handle and didn't mention it.
That's why I asked.

The SW sights are standard height sights, they will work with most other sighting systems out there for the AR-15.

Nice hearing about quality time spent with kids and passing on a tradition to them that also will hopefully be passed on too.
My zero is set at 50 yards. Remember,it's a plinker. But it is fun trying to squeeze the best out of it (besides just good looks).

I plan on zeroing at 50 yards, but not when it's below 40° and damp out. I tried to set my POI somewhat above the center at the indoor 25 yard range so I should be close when it warms up.

You do realize the sights on the 15-22 have both windage and evevation adjustment on the rear sight? The usual method for this type of AR sight is to pre-adjust the front sight so that the base of the post and the bottom of the "U" are flush at the same level, then sight in the rifle using the rear sight adjustment only. Only readjust the front of you run out of rear adjustment travel.

Went back to the range last night to try out some new ideas. My right eye is pretty bad (under 5 feet I can't see much without glasses), but my left eye still works fairly well. I hold all of my pistols right handed and sight with my left eye. I tried doing the same with the 15-22 and found that by tilting it a little to the left, and tilting my head a little to the right, I can get a comfortable cheek weld and use my left eye with the BSA red dot mounted on the carry handle. I was able to use the small aperture open sights with my bad right eye because the small aperture acts as a diopter and corrects some of my sight deficiencies. I was consistently grouping within the size of the last joint of my thumb at 25 yards using the small aperture open sight and my right eye. I tried the Crosshair and 2 MOA dot on the BSA, and they both hit fairly close to the open sight POI with the same minute of thumb accuracy using my left eye. I didn’t try the Circle Cross reticle, but I did try the Circle Dot one, and it hit about 1-1/2” to the left of my previous hits (same elevation).
Even with my bad right eye, I am able to quickly acquire and hit the target using the BSA red dot, but my groups open up a little bit. Either way, right eye or left eye, I am a lot faster on target with the red dot than when using the standard sights, however, I am a bit more accurate when using the small aperture open sights. It just takes me longer to get my eye adjusted to everything before I can fire. The large aperture rear sight is completely useless to me - the front sight is so blurry it is almost invisible.
I'm not an experienced AR shooter, so I don't know if I'm phrasing this correctly, but I adjusted my sights so that I'm 1-1/2" high at 25 yards. I'm thinking that I should be close to center at 50 yards with this holdover. This places me four clicks above the "4" on my rear sight. Does that mean anything? I'm not really sure what the numbers on the vertical adjustment mean.

I took my time today at the range and worked to get my sights adjusted so that the hits were centered on the bullseye at 25 yards. When I finished, the scores on my last targets (NRA Official 50ft Timed and Rapid Fire Pistol Target - 25 Rounds) were as follows:
Iron Sights (Carry Handle) - 246
BSA Red-Dot (Crosshair) - 247
BAS Red-Dot (2 MOA Dot) - 249 The 10 ring on this target is 1-3/4" in diameter.

Last fall I took a laser bore-sighter with me to the indoor 25-yard range and zeroed in both the reflex sight I had at the time and my targeting laser. I also had the compact binoculars I keep in the range bag to check targets with me and used that to affirm what my eyes saw. It worked well, the drop of CCI .22LR at 25-yards is negligible so I was easily able to coincide the bullet path (red bore-sighter), the green of the targeting laser, and the red of the reflex sight's reticle. The efficacy of this method was then proven with live ammo. I've since changed to a 3-MOA red-dot BSA optic on a riser and also the position of my targeting laser so I'm gonna have to do the whole thing over but it works and can be done anywhere you have a known distance, even where you can't legally discharge a firearm. For anything under 50-yards, I believe that a laser boresighter is invaluable for those seeking precision in sight alignment.
