Default Federal Bulk Packs

Spoke to someone at a large LGS. Federal told them that they are no longer making the 525 packs but going with 100ct size packaging.

Anyone else heard this?

That does not make any sense for them to do so. Why on earth would they do that when everyone is trying to get either the bulk pack 525 or 325?

Some people think that 525 rds jostling around inside a box is detrimental to the bullet profile. As much as I like bulk convenience, I'd rather have 10 and 1/2 boxes of 50. Easier to put two boxes in a pocket for the day than lug the whole shebang around.

75% of what comes out of a big LGS employee's mouth is garbage. About the only info you can trust from them is if they have the item in stock and what it cost.

There are rare instances where they know what there talking about but them are few and far between. Its cheap labor over quality at places like that most the time.

Two boxes in a pocket is a fine idea, but if I'm buying BULK in 500+ packs, I'm obviously not too worried about some minor bullet dents. I'm going for quantity over quality. If you are worried about that buy Ely match ammo which is individually packed.

The minor dents a 525 bulk pack will develop will not be detrimental for the type of shooting you are meant to do with 500+ bulk packs.

I wouldn't even trust them with the whole in stock thing either. Most of them automatically say "no" over the phone regardless to what you ask them.

Never happen...WalMart seems to only carry the bulk packs, at least in my area. Federal even special packs a 550 box (instead of the usual 525) just for them, and I'm sure they are a huge customer.

The only, and I mean only, reason for this is if they know something about the yearly limit proposal.

May sound like a lot of work but I transfer bulk packs into the 100 round CCI sleeves that I save and mark with a sharpie on a piece of painters tape. Don't believe they're discontinuing the bulk packs, it's a big seller for them.

I just bought 3 of them at the local WM yesterday, and watched the clerk open a fresh 10 box case to get them for me. I also reported in the ammo in stock thread this morning that 5 WM stores local to me have these in stock. Not buying this rumor.

Federal bulk is a huge seller for the company. In all likelyhood it's the rounds that didn't make the grade to be included in the 100-ct plastic cases anyway. Just about all ammo manufacturers have a way of "disposing" of sub-grade ammo. Argueably some manufacturers cast-offs are much better than others. And still I've seen some vary from lot to lot, box to box.

Federal also sells ammo in 500 round bricks, 10 boxes of 50.

You call 100 rounds a day's shooting?

I don't lug boxes of ammo around; I put it in my magazines and take them.

Actually I didn't. That's my own personal opinion after noticing that many manufacturers, not necessarily Federal, have bulk ammo and packaged ammo that uses the same casing and/or same weight, shape, size bullet. Powder could be different, I didn't go so far as to taste that. Just find it interesting that lots of manufacturers seem to do this or something similar. Take Winchester Super-X Hi-velocity RN ammo vs. M-22 in the bulk pack for example. Do you disagree?

I've always been a fan of CCI Blazer and American Eagle bricks because of that exact reason. I also like that I can slide the plastic holder out and dump rows of 5 in my hand rather than not knowing exactly how many I'm scooping up. The Blazers in 500 count bricks have 10 boxes of 50 in the plastic tray....they are my favorite for that reason alone.

I save the plastic boxes and just load them up with the loose rounds from the bulk pack. Keeps me occupied while watching TV.

Easier to charge more/bullet in smaller boxes and it doesn't appear to hurt as bad to the untrained eye. Witness 4# of sugar now in what still appears to be a 5# sack. Same price.

I doubt it's really happening but if it is, you can bet this is REALLY why.

I shot my first .22 LR ammo in about 1961. It was a paper box of 50 Winchesters that had been manufactured in the late 1930's that I got from my Dad. In subsequent years we shot similar boxed 50's made in the 1960's.

I actually bought and paid for myself my first box of ammo in the 1970's - CCI minimags in the 100 count plastic boxes. Bought so many that I still have a ton of plastic boxes that are used to this day refilled from bulk packs. I thought these CCIs were the cats meow - they simply worked well all the time.

In the 1990's I graduated with bricks and experimented with remington and the others. Ended up throwing out ALL the Rems and settled on Wins and others.

Always had a few semis that refused to run one kind or the other.

Lately I switched to Federal bulk packs - both 525s and 550s. ALL my guns (a dozen or so) run well with them without a hiccup. In 50 years of shooting I have never been that satisfied. If they are seconds, then I have to say you couldn't prove it by me.

OK, maybe I missed the mark by calling bulk ammo sub-grade. I didn't mean that it was not good or reliable ammo. I did however mean that if you use a caliper and measure something like rim casing thickness you will find more variations in bulk boxed ammo than in any other type of packaging. (Generally.) Like it or not, all companies have internal QC standards. What might not pass for match or target grade due to a slight irregularity would be no cause for outright disposal, but putting this ammo into a bulk bin would be a logical use. I don't think anyone would, or should, argue that shooting ammo with ultra consistent rim casing thicknesses should produce more consistent target groupings. How much smaller? Who's to say, depends on the rifle really. Go buy ANY product in bulk and see what quality you get. Maybe not substandard, but usually not prime. My only point was this: Bulk may not be as consistent ammo as some other 100-count packaging based on QC, not based on how it is packaged. I myself have also found Federal to be tops as far as bulk packaged ammo is concerned, but I can get better groupings from better ammo. Or by gauging the Federal bulk pack ammo's rim casing thickness - which just goes to prove my point. However I'll admit if you're checking rim casing thickness for your 15-22 then you are one serious type-A kind of guy. Checking it and sorting accordingly for your Anschutz, now that's a different story. This concludes my thoughts and opinions on bulk ammo. Happy weekend everyone! Hope you all get to shoot as much as I do in the next few days!

Wally World here in Little Rock has Remington 22lr in 225 round bulk boxes. $9.97 + tax per box. Says New and Improved on the box. I have never seen this size of box before. Has anyone else?
I picked up my 3 boxes to try out. They even had some 250 round value packs of 40 cal and 45 ACP, 1st time I have seen them on the shelf in awhile.

Academy has the same limit here in Arkansas also. They also keep it at the customer service desk not at the gun counter.

The exact reason I preferred to buy Federal 510 .40 grain in the 500 round/10 boxes of 50 brick at a gun store over the 525 bulk pack at Wally World. I just hope the gun stores get some ammo at reasonable prices next year when I finally need some.

Just so we are all clear on the origin of this...

Largest LGS in Chicago suburbs (hold your opinion please).
Huge dealer of all Federal ammunition.
Person was helpful, courteous and knowledgeable on other brands of .22lr and their quality.
Was not arrogant, explained that Federal contacted them to go over their 2013 plans and that they will not be making the 525 pack this year.
Did not state nor imply that Walmart would or would not be selling them.

Now, I realize the person could have been feeding me a line of malarkey, but I did not get that impression at all.

I just contacted Federal directly and inquired about the possible change. I'll let er'body know.

Now that's one thing I haven't seen around here in quite awhile (500 round bricks, 10 boxes of 50) like the good ol' days. Those fit perfect in the 5.56-840 count ammo boxes for storage.

100 round wouldn't come close to a days shooting here either.

I won't debate that bulk ammo isn't made to the same standards as individually packaged Olympic target ammo that is priced 10x higher. The flaw I find in your theory is the implication that they actually sort the stuff and some goes into a B quality bin. No mass produced product could withstand double handling and still be cost competitive. The "good" stuff is simply made on higher tolerance machinery and at a lower production rate.

Doubt that Federal Cartridge would tell a LGS employee that.
Probably just more of the usual "gunshop guy" who thinks he
has the pulse of the hobby figured out.
I would rather think Federal would make it known if it we're
indeed discontinuing this packaging.

I have continued to find the 325 bulk packs locally. I bought 975 rounds just today but, it has been some time since I've seen the 555 bulk pack.

Federal bulk ammo is junk, pure useless junk. I bought a case of it (10 boxes) of 525 round box size. Using 7 different .22 rifles and pistols I was experiancing 1 or 2 out of 10 duds or weak discharge. After struggling through two boxes I sold the rest to guys at the range for $10 a box just to recoup some of my money. I told them it was junk but they wanted it anyway.

That's solely YOUR experience!

Over 15k of the stuff through my 15-22 and some other firearms in the last year and maybe a dozen minor problems - and not one of them failed to fire the second time.

This /\/\/\/\/\

Has been my experience as well, 550's and 525's is all I have shot out of my 22 auto for the past couple years and it has performed well. Shoots much cleaner than other bulk pack offerings from others companies to boot.

Did you bother to call Federal to see if you received a bad lot? Or what they could do for you?

These guys were probably laughing at you all the way home. I've shot countless rounds of this stuff, always reliable.

Have you cleaned your guns lately?

Here's what I wrote to ATK (parent company):

"I was recently at a local firearm store and they are a large dealer of Federal products. The sales person stated that Federal will not be selling the popular 525 Bulk packs of .22lr ammunition in 2013. These are commonly called "blue box" and are 36g, copper hollow point. Can you confirm that Federal will not be making this popular packaging in 2013?"

Here's their reply:

"Roger - We are still manufacturing load 745 the "Blue Box"."

Will stop by LGS and ensure I heard them clearly and to help me understand this information.

Wasn't gun issues, it was junk ammo. Loaded up CCI Blazers in the same guns and got 100% results.

And do you think Federal really cares, they're turning out the stuff as fast as they can crank the handle.

I hear that. When I was making my rounds the other day, I stopped by a gun shop and overheard the employee talking about how Missouri is trying to ban ALL semi-automatics and if you haven't bought one yet, you better! What a joker! This was at Sovereign Arms (141/21)... Let's scare people into buying a gun... Needless to say, they didn't have what I was looking for. Go figure. Must of scared someone into buying it...lol

That story is true. They want all semi-autos sold out of state, turned in or destroyed. That story broke on Friday afternoon.

Of all the bulk ammo I've shot, I have to say the Federal is some of the most reliable. Much better than the bulk Remington (although I havent shot the new and improved Golden Bullets yet) and Winchester 555 packs.

No, it's not junk ammo. As others have stated, Federal ammo, even the cheapest stuff, is some of, if not the most reliable ammo in the industry.

Federal also have the best customer service in the industry as well.

I hate to tell you this, but CCI and Federal are owned by the same parent company, ATK.

I have bought a couple of bad boxes of Federal 375 packs (in 2011, I think). They all went bang, but the accuracy was not normal by Fed bulk pack standards. Those have been the exception. I would agree with others who say that Federal bulk pack is among the best of the bulk ammo.
