Question How much should I pay for .22 Ammo?

I'm going to a gun show tomorrow and was hoping y'all could chime in on what are fair ammo prices. I don't mind paying a little more due to the current situation but I don't want to get totally ripped off either.
I haven't bought .22 ammo in a long time so I have no idea what it should cost.
I'm not sure what I will be buying since I don't know what they'll have but if you can give me average cost per round or something that would be helpful.
I'd like to find some CCI Stingers, some Aquilla, ans some cheaper bulk stuff.
Thanks in advance!

It all depends on how badly you want the ammo and how badly the sellers want to sell. There is no way we can determine what you want to pay and we cannot determine what the vendors will want for their product.

If you want to pay what the vendors want, then you are in business.

Ultimately, it will be your decision.

Thanks for replies. I understand the "what is it worth to me" principle, but like I said I haven't bought any in forever so I don't even know what it should cost. I have no problem with someone charging a big premium because I can either buy or pass, I just want to know how high a premium he's charging so I can decide to buy or wait. I bought a couple mags at $50 a piece but I knew what there were suppose to retail for as well. I don't plan on buying anymore until things get better though.
I have some ammo now but not all the flavors I'd like my new 15-22 to taste.
Thanks again for the replies and if anyone has bought any ammo since the chaos started and can put what kind and the price you paid that would be even better info to be armed with.

Basic economics 101 - you will pay the price until the price rises to a level where you will not pay... then when enough do not pay, the price will drop to a new acceptable level. The hoarders are driving up the prices and will soon be left with ammo they cant sell to recoup their initial investment which will make everyone else happy...

Like others have stated above, the old "normal" was about 04-06 cents per round. The new "normal" ranges from 10-20 cents per round. You paid more than double for your mags so you can expect the same for the ammo.

It's starting to show up at 4-5 cents a round at Cabelas, Bass Pro, and Walmart. If you don't HAVE TO HAVE IT, that's the cap I'd run with. UNLESS you want to buy some of mine at $5 a round

I still use $25.00 for a brick of 500 rounds (.05 per round) as my benchmark. Before the shortage, I could find a brick of 500 CCI standard velocity, for $25.00, so that is where I'm staying. I did have a buddy pick up 2 Federal value packs (550 rounds each) from a LGS for $27.50 per pack. Tonight my son passed on some bricks of American Eagle for $32.00 per brick. One thing to keep in mind is your cost for gas to get to the local gun shop or show. If your spending $10 on gas, and are limited to 2 bricks, you are adding another $5 to the cost of each brick of ammo. If you get to the gun show and they allow you to buy however many bricks you want, the gas savings may offset a slightly higher price per brick.

I overpaid for a case a couple weeks back, $0.08rd. That was about the only caliber that I didn't have a comfortable supply of, well my
10mm stock pile is not all that great either.

But having 2 boys we shoot .22lr quite a bit & was worth it to me.

Under normal circumstances you would pay...

Blazer 525 Bulk pack....$20-$22

Winchester M-22....Box of 1000...$49-$59

CCI Mini Mag Troy Landry Box of 375...$25-$30

CCI Mini Mag 40 grain 100 count...$7-10

Federal bulk Box 525...$20-25

Probably will not see any at the gun show at these prices though.

Tough question to ask us. In late November, I didn't restock my ammo because my favorite ammo, Blazers, went up to 17.99 for a 525 count box, coupled with free shipping, and no tax. I was used to paying 15.99 per box! If I didn't have any ammo, I would pay up to $30 to go shooting. But, I wouldn't pay that much to stockpile. Just like many people here, I think things will normalize in a couple of months.

At the last gun show around here bricks of 22LR were going fo $40 to $50 a brick and CCI was $10 to $12 per hundred.

I'm lucky as I had stocked up long ago and because I can't load 22LR I keep a inventory on hand of 10 bricks minimum. I'll probably raise the level when the market settles down because I just bought a S&W 15-22. The inventory level was set before when I only used 22LR ammo in my S&W pistols.

<Tongue in cheek mode on> The current Gander Mountain has some very good prices, somewhat higher than Wall Mart. Of course the sign said, "Furgeddaboutit!" They ain't got none.
Seriously I can find NO LR in the local shops and the big stores in Jax have limits and were packed solid on a Friday afternoon.
Geoff
Who passed up a whole lot of LR and then inventoried his stuff SIGH.

I believe that means the LGS bought their supply from Walmart (550 vs 525) and resold it. I'd bypass that LGS from now on.

Even if gun "reform" gets passed at any level (fed, state,or local) I doubt the 22lr will ever be regulated. Prices will return to near normal within a year.

That said, if you're out then it's just what you're willing to pay to shoot. I would not stock up at these prices.

Any ammo you find at a gun show will be grossly overpriced. It all depends upon how desperate you are for ammo.

Before Wally World had a hard time keeping ammo stocked,I bought 8 Federal 550 bulk at $18.something. Things started going crazy and they went to $21. or $23 for the 550's. I bought all they had,14 boxes and haven't bought or seen any bulk packs since.

I will pay whatever I need to pay to get what I want. .15 fine. Even .20 if I want to shoot and nothing else is available. It is only money. The " I will only pay .02 a round" attitude is not mine. I want what I want when I want it.

Was at the Gunshow in Plant City Florida this morning and saw Mini Mag 375 box (the one with the Gator guy on it) with a $90 price tag on it. .24 cents a round. I passed. I've paid as much at .10 cents a round recently but I'll let my supply run completely out before going much over that.

I just came back from a show and a guy there was selling CCI SV bricks for $60 with no limit on how many you could buy. That was quite easy to pass on.

I paid 50 bucks for 1000 rounds this morning. Was picking up some 40cal hollow points at my local gun shop and happened to ask if they had any 22lr and the owner gave me 2 bricks for the price of one. And even let me have Hornadys at the 2012 price ($26)

That's what I was finding before all this, figured 23 was better than what I have been seeing, wish I would have bought more but can't go back, this brings me up to about 3k so will probably just wait it out and check Wally World as they get it now, at least I can go out and shoot, or will be able too when the rifle gets back from S&W.

~.09/round has been my limit so far. That was for 4 50 ct boxes of CCI SV at the range to replace what I was shooting that night. Seems like they only raised the price ~ .20/box since before the recent run and they seem like pretty decent folks there so I didn't feel so bad. Most of what I've been shooting for the past couple of months was purchased at between .04 and .05/round.

At this point I couldn't bring myself to buy from a gouger at a gun show or on gunbroker, but I've still got a few thousand rounds left. If my .04/round shipments of Automatch from Cabela's and Blazers from Brownells doesn't come through and I continue to miss the local stock at Wally World, Bass Pro, and Dick's then things might change.

I picked up 2 bricks of Blazer for $18.99, I think there was 3 I left on the shelf. Might be shopping the same store. lol I also picked up 500 rounds of CCI SV for $6.69 per 100 and 1500 rounds of CCI Mini-Mag HP for $6.59 per 100.

For pricing I typically stay around...

4-5 cents for bulk
6-7 cents for CCI mini mags or SV
10-11 cents for stingers

For pricing I typically stay around...

4-5 cents for bulk
6-7 cents for CCI mini mags or SV
10-11 cents for stingers
green bay east is where i got it.

Thanks in advance!
if these rounds are for a 15-22(which i assume they are)you might not want to get CCI stingers.the manual that comes with your 15-22 states NOT to use CCI stingers.i dont know why, maybe the higher velocity is too much for the rifle to handle long term.cost per round will vary from seller to seller, store to store depending on the resellers greed.i have seen rounds as low as 6-7 cents ea all the way up to 20cents each(which is absurd).i wouldnt pay more than 10 cents/ea and thats only if i really wanted them bad.

It says not to use Stingers in the 15-22 Performance Center model. It has a match chamber that will not accommodate the CCI Stinger's. They are fine to use in the standard 15-22 models.

Haha that's great! I am happy that what I didn't buy when to someone here. I thought about getting a shopping cart and grabbing the rest of the Blazer but wanted others to get some ammo too. That was Friday evening. I went back Saturday morning and the Blazer and CCI SV was all gone. They had Mini-Mag HP's so I grabbed 1,000 of those.

Fleet farm is far and away my favorite place to get ammo. They have been getting it on and off in stock and haven't raised prices that I have noticed.

i know a guy that works the fleet-farm weapons dept. when i went there to look for .22's, there wasn't any on the shelf. i asked him about them,he went in the back brought out a case of 10, i took 3, the rest he put on the shelf. i think they only do 10 boxes at a time so more people get a chance at getting some. there was 500 round bricks of .38 special too. i got 2 of those, $89.99 each.

What you SHOULD pay for 22 LR ammo is no more than 25 cents per box of 50 rounds. Naturally, we all are forced to pay MUCH more than that these days.

Wow. The older I get, the more I miss the "good ol' days."

When buying ammo, follow Jeff Cooper's advice. Always buy twice what you need, and store the other half. You will soon have a nice stock pile and be regarded with alarm, suspicion and outright fear by anyone who finds out about your stockpile!
