Are the grip screw threads plastic as well?
I assume they are, but my buddy put a Hogue on and I warned him not to overtighten, but he tightened to the point where the screw wouldn't turn anymore. Now he is panicking. I told him just to back it out to where there is no gap between the grip and the receiver.

I believe that the female threads are polymer, as is the rest of the receiver. With that in mind, I don't think the grip screw needs to be super tight. Just tighten it so that it is reasonably snug. That lock washer should help keep the tension on the threads so that you don't have the screw backing out on you (assuming you reuse the stock grip screw/washer).

Thanks. That's what I told him. He got the screw out, screwed it back in and it still felt snug, so I don't think he stripped anything.

The bolt/thread fit is tight. We are so used to loose threads, it's often disconcerting when we run across tight ones. As has been said, snug enough to prevent grip movement is sufficient.
Yes, the threads are just tapped into the polymer lower receiver.
