Default Got my MBUS PTS back ups today for the 15-22...

... and I'm completely unimpressed. Yes, I realize they are only backup sights. Yes, I realize the PTS line is cheap. But seriously, these things are garbage. The rear sight aperture is loose and wobbles all over the place, and they just look and feel like ****. I didn't expect much for $15 (eBay), but these don't live up to even minimal expectations. They are the Gen 1 MBUS, which I understand to be of a lesser quality than the Gen 2 sights. Are the Gen 2's any better or should I look elsewhere for my backup sight needs?

You get what you pay for... shouldn't expect much for $15. You purchased sights that are made for a toy gun. Go Magpul or go home. :-D

I recently bought a set and told myself they are what they are, junk. When they arrived i put them on and they work ok. Im not pumped about them but not dissatisfied. If you went to mcdonalds and asked for a cheeseburger at 1/5 the price, guess what u would get? A pickle burger.

Either way. You're going to have to put out $80.+ for a good set of folding sights and get it over with. Stay away from the airsoft knock-offs.Even the kids are mountaing better sights than those.

Here's my 10/22 decked out with the Magpul PTS stuff. For a total of $55 for all of it im not gonna complain. Its on a gun that i don't plan on strapping to my back and running through the deserts of iraq.

I have never understood the philosophy of spending $500 on a firearm and then putting $20 sights and other toy-quality accessories on it.

Like I said, I didn't expect much. I did figure they would be of better quality than they are. I see what you are saying Major, however, I am of the opposite persuasion. I don't see the point in putting a $500 optic on a $500 gun. It's not a battle rifle. My life does not depend on its function. I punch paper and shoot cans with it. I put stuff on it that works but does not cost a fortune.

As for my question in the OP, are the Gen 2 MBUS any better than the Gen 1?

Buy cheap, buy twice.
If only there had been another thread or 20 about PTS/eBay knockoff sights...

Ehh, the subject at hand is 15 dollar flip up sights verses 80 dollar flip up sights, where did you get 500 dollar optics?

Blasted from my Samsung Galaxy SIII (CM10.1 Masta Mix).

No one said anything about $500 optics, but if that was what it took to get the results I wanted, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I have a $300 scope on my match 77/22 because that's what I needed when I was shooting competitively.

The scope on my 15-22 was $100 and it does what I need for the type of shooting I do with it.

The quality of REAL MagPul sights is the same - Gen 1 or Gen 2. What you bought were NOT MagPul sights; they are Chinese knock-offs, just like everything else sold on eBay that are called PTS. MagPul does NOT make PTS sights.

If they are eBay PTS, they will be Chinese junk, no matter what they are called.

I'm no expert, but from what I've learned, you have 3 main options for folding BUIS.

1) Spend $15 & buy the Chinese junk (not the boat) that looks like a sight but doesn't act like one. If you don't care about shooting but only want your gun to look cool... this is your option.

2) Spend a little over $200 for metal Troy sights. These are what I use on my AR & I think they are the best out there.

3) Spend about $80 for the high quality plastic molded sights from Magpul. These are what I have on my 15-22 & I am very impressed with them. I have the Gen 2. IMO, they are perfect for such a gun as this & actually would feel very safe in using them on my AR.

I have both sets. The Gen 1 on the post of the front sight, is way longer/taller than the Gen2. I was told the length/tallness was messing up the sigh adjustment to where it was shooting low. Gen 1 post looked a little thicker also. Looks are cosmetic as the Gem 2 has the release on the side levers and on the top with a grooved little valley. thinking I am missing something else, another senior moment!

I think the overwhelming number of MagPul sights installed are for this reason.

I know this. Never said they were legit Magpul. I know the PTS stuff is Chinese. As for the $500 optic comment. That was just an example providing insight into my state of mind. I don't need an Aimpoint to shoot beer cans at 25 yards. I was primarily just wondering if the Gen 2 sights were of a higher quality than the Gen 1's.

Ok, i can see where this is headed. Im gonna try and explain why I bought them.

My 15-22 MOE

My bushmaster with Official magpul sights.

My ruger with "Chinese junk"

So as you can see, i own both. Im an average guy on an average budget. Im lucky to own any of the above guns. I cannot afford true Magpul sights for my ruger at this time. So i thought these were better than nothing. And when i can afford a nice optic for this gun, i will fold these down and forget about them. All people on this forum arent on a limitless budget. My true thoughts about the "Chinese junk" is yeah they are junk, but i adjusted them, and they work for now. Was i suppose to wait months till i could afford better ones? Does someone out there wanna loan me the money for better ones?

I like to shoot with iron sights but I also like the red dot I have on it. Would just like the option of both. Thanks for your input and recommendations.

In the real MagPul sights, the quality is the same - top notch. In the Chinese stuff - one is probably as much junk as the other.

Thanks for this helpful comment. I will look into these. I can live with $80. Can't see spending $200 on the troys at this time.

I can understand your plight... been there before. However, we are talking about firearms here... not air guns or toys. IMO, owning one requires that you not use junk (your words also) on something that controls where the bullet goes. So yes, I would say wait until you can afford proper tools before using this weapon. Patience is a virtue.

Back on topic, accept the loss and upgrade to real Magpul accessories. I don't get why so many people knowingly buy junk to be shocked that it is exactly that when it arrives. Save your money and do it right.

Correct.

Check the Magpul PTS website. PTS sights sell for the same price as the regular Magpul sights.

Anything else is a fake.

Also it saves money NOT buying junk. You are that much closer to getting something better. Something is better than nothing doesn't work for many things.

The Gen 2's are a little smaller and when folded down are lower profile than the Gen 1's.

Those are Chinese junk. The real Magpul sights come in a plastic bag and are always individually packaged.

Here is a link to the official Magpul PTS website:

MBUS Rifle Sights

The link takes you directly to the sights. Please note the prices. They are the same as the regular Magpul prices.

If you only paid $50 or less for a set that wasn't used, you bought Chinese knock-offs. PERIOD. Rarely, very rarely are real Magpul or Magpul PTS sights ever discounted much more than 10%

I don't care if people want to buy the fake parts and put them on their firearm. That's fine with me. Buy what you want. There have been plenty of people who have said how they have problems with them. Buyer beware.

What irks me is when people buy the cheap stuff and then whine about how Magpul PTS isn't any good.

Duh.

If you drink the contents of your target first, the quality of the sights doesn't matter.

I'd be embarassed to post groupings that bad unless it was at 200 yards....

They are the Gen 1 MBUS, which I understand to be of a lesser quality than the Gen 2 sights. Are the Gen 2's any better or should I look elsewhere for my backup sight needs?
The Magpul PTS line isn't cheap.

Only the knockoffs are cheap. You took a chance, you lost.

Somewhere there was a military sanctioned test covering folding sights for the M4 (or whatever the military version is). The plastic Magpuls did very well, the metal sights dented and were bent in the drop tests.

Only problem is that the Magpuls really don't last on on a gas block....

The reverse can also be said. If I save the $50 on the real deals for a set of sights that work "ok" then I'm $50 closer to purchasing a decent optic so I won't need the backups often.....

I have a set of Gen 1 and Gen 2 "MBUS". The Gen 1's say PTS on them and the Gen 2's (which are also not genuine) don't.

I am however running an Aimpoint H-1. I don't think I'll EVER need the irons. And if I do it won't be $200 sights. Or even $100 sights.

Listen you guys, if you can't afford expensive toys, why can't you just take some good advice from my crazy uncle Joe. Get a shotgun. A double barrel shotgun. Just go out on the back deck.....

I guess I can see both sides of this argument. I constantly get chastised by co-workers about my "toy" AR. They do not take the time to even consider the fun and enjoyment that I get out of shooting the 15-22. To them it isn't a Big Boy rifle, so it becomes somewhat of a joke. I probably shoot my 15-22 more than all my AR-15 buddies combined and shots downrange count for something in my book. The only thing that allows me to do this... to train this way... is the fact that the rifle is cheap, the ammo is cheap, and it doesn't completely rattle the neighbors when I do a LOT of shooting. Now each of us has our own likes and purpose. Some want the 15-22 to shoot tight groups, others like it because it LOOKS like an AR, all of us like it because it is cheap fun. If what YOU like is to put cheap parts on your rifle and that quality is acceptable to you, then why the heck does everyone seem to care? If the OP doesn't want to spend $80 on sights, then so what. We each have our own price point for items in life. If you just want to plink and do mag dumps once in a while, then airsoft sights that "look" like the latest SEAL-itis goodies might be just what you need. Having $200 backup sights on your .22 seems overkill to me personally, but I realize that some people like (and can easily afford) that sort of thing. I think that is awesome. Just don't rail on the OP for not wanting to spend lots of cash on something he may never use. And OP, let this be an indication of the responses you'll receive EVERY TIME you ask a question about cheap parts like these. Hope you enjoy your rifle - whichever sights you choose.

I don't think anyone here was railing on the OP for buying cheap knockoffs. He came here to say that he was thoroughly unimpressed with his $15 sights. To most of us, it's pretty clear that if you want to go cheap, you shouldn't expect much, that's all, and recommend that the OP spend a tad more to make himself happy.

Default Got my MBUS PTS back ups today for the 15-22...

I don't see why people get so stuck on spending X amount on an optic to go on a weapon that cost X amount. I see them as two completely different tools and as such will spend whatever I see fit to get the best tools of both kind. Yes they work together, but the cost of one should NOT coincide with the cost of the other. As stated before, I'll pay whatever for something that does the job I want it to. I have around $1200 on top of my $500 weapon, but it does what I want so it doesn't matter to me.

I have around $1200 on top of my $500 weapon, but it does what I want so it doesn't matter to me.
Agreed. When I first got my 15-22, I went to an LGS to inquire about purchasing a red dot for it. The guy behind the counter asked what kind of gun, and when I told him it was a 15-22, he laughed and said, "That's a $400 gun, all of our red dots cost and are worth a lot more than that!" and turned to another customer. I said loudly, "That's okay, I won't burden you with the load of cash that I was going to drop in here." He looked at me as the color drained from his face and I walked out. I ultimately ended up buying a TruGlo Red/Green for $65 at Dick's.
