Maybe a little more description would help? We don't know what shroud you're talking about, or any details. Pics?

Why do you want to remove the hand guard?
There is a kit here;
Barrel Vise Jaws and Barrel Nut Wrench (Pro) for Smith & Wesson M&P15-22 - COMBO [BVJ-1 and BNW-2-A - COMBO] - $47.00 : Tacticool22, Tactical .22 Rifle Parts and Accessories
that you use to remove the barrel nut so you can remove the hand guard.
If you want to put a free float hand guard on, there is another kit for that.
If you want to put any 2 piece hand guard on, there will be a kit for that in about a month.

It's cosmoline or equivalent , you should clean the gun completely than reapply oil of your own.

You do know this is a 4 year old thread and the OP probably figured it out.

Wink

Do you realize in 4 years that no one answered his question correctly , do you realize that some people go back and search or read posts. Why didn't you answer the question?????

I did not answer as TC "tacticool22" already answered the OP on how to remove the quadrail.

this wasn't answered, even though it's in the owners manual.
Anyway it always good to fully clean a new gun, it easy, nowhere near s bad as a SKS packed in cosmoline.
