Default Finally fired her. New favorite rifle? SK Ammo report.

Finally got to go to the range yesterday with my wife, and fire my 15-22. Wife had a new sight she needed to dial in for her Archangel 10/22, so we both spent some time getting the sights where we wanted them.

I gotta say, I love this frigging rifle. I put about 700 rounds through it yesterday, and only had a few problems.

1. One pretty serious misfeed. This was with CCI ammo. the round got crushed and kinked at like a 90 degree angle. No idea how it happened.

2. 2 times the bolt caught the ejecting brass when coming forward and smashed it sideways when chambering the next round. I've never seen this before, and again, only happened with the CCI ammo I had preloaded.

That's it. Took a bit to get my green dot sighted in, but once it was on, it was ON. I was emptying the 25 round S&W mag, and the 32 round Promags with no issues.

This is a beautiful outdoor range, weather was clear but there was a breeze with the occasional gust.

Here's some pictures and such.

Here's my first grouping.

This pic shows me walking the rounds from left to right on different adjustment sessions. I started getting a little carried away and going into rapid fire. The upper set was firing at the upper right target.

Here's my wife and her 10/22. Note the Tri Mag 10 round mags.

That one is a video if you click it...

The wind started to kick up and gust after that, so I didn't take any other pictures. Managed to get about a 1.5 inch group for 5 rounds right in the center where I wanted it, and then we let loose for a bit. The Lapua SK Magazine ammo was just awesome. it does have a bit of a funny smell when you fire it the first few rounds, but man does it fire good. Not one misfire, misfeed, or anything else. I got my best rapid fire groupings with this ammo, and am super glad I bought so much of it.

My only complaint at all with the oily nature of it, is that the feed lips of my magazines were collecting the fine sand blowing around with the wind (New Mexico). I will probably wipe the rounds down every time I open a new can from now on to avoid this, but not super thoroughly.

My wife also fired about 150 rounds of it from her 10/22 without a single problem, but had a few misfires and a few misfeeds with the Thunderbolt HP stuff whe is trying to fiinish off.

Anyways, next time I'll try to remember to get some more shots later. We were both getting excited and wanted to roll through some ammo. Haven't got to shoot in a few months.

Also fired my SKS for the first time in about 15 years. That was FUN.

What yard line were you shooting at?

30 on those. They have these metal markers up for 25 yards and we were behind that right up against the berm to hold the targets up. Kept blowing the metal stands over with the gusts.

Oh, we went out to 105 yards after that, and was still pretty darned happy with it.

No bipod obviously, no sandbags, just elbows on concrete.

Yep, it sure is fun, ain't it.

If you only had a couple of stovepipes (what you described) it may be the ejector wasn't able to kick the empty case out as the bolt and extractor brought it back.

Could just be a round or two with a defective rim. If it starts happening more often. The ejector may need adjusting.

Just got back from the range myself, and yes it was fun as usual. Glad your liking yours as well. They are very addicting and once ammo availability calms down, your going to enjoy it more.

Welcome to the addiction!!

Pour about 1/4 of the can of ammo into a bath towel, fold it over and roll it back and fourth. You will be shocked at how much of the residue comes off, and how dirty it is. It will still have a light coating of the grease on it. But it will remove about 80% of it. I should of took a picture of the towel after cleaning one can of it. It was black with dirt.

Last time I went out shooting I put 650 rounds through mine without a hitch, then I had one 50 round box of cci at the end. My wife was shooting the last mag when she had an ejecting issue. We got everything cleared and started having light strike issues, luckily it was the last mag of ammo we had. When I got home and cleaned it I found a casing lodged in the hammer and the casing was smashed! Any ideas how this happened or has anyone else had this issue?

Sightmark

Fantastic sight. I've got 2 of them, about to buy one for my SKS, my other is on my Rock River M4. I think at Sportsmans Guide it is cheaper now, that's where I bought my second.

I didn't buy it because it is "Zombie Edition" either folks, I prefer green dots. Red dots make me hesitate on shooting, green means go on the trigger for me. Also stands out better on dark backgrounds in my opinion.

Hmm, thanks for your input here Tennreb. I'll make sure I pay attention to it. No problems the last what, 500 rounds?

BTW, thanks for the right term, I've fired about 100,000 rounds in my days, have never seen this that I can think of.

But I do drink a lot...

Oh, ain't my first rifle, shooting my wife's 10/22 last time really made me want to get a .22. I've got about 8 rifles, a XDM pistol and a hell of a shotgun. I LOVE to shoot, the Army ruined me. LOL

As for ammo, I think you missed my "Tower of Power" thread. I'm good for probably a year or so.

The black on your towel is probably from the lead, the brass is new and the lubricant is clear.

Wow, I've never heard of anything like this. perhaps you had the stovepipe and it cut the brass off and left it in there?
