Default New 15-22 owner.. little advise.

I picked up a 15-22 today and wanted to pickup a red dot site for some plinking .. probably 30-40 yards and some small targets. Was thinking 3x red dot? I know very little about the AR platform. Is there an option to use the iron sites for close shots and red dot for further out shots? Not sure what type of riser is needed etc. Thx for any advice. I got around 100$ to blow on the site.

Primary Arms 30mm Red Dot
Add the $10 High AR-15 Cantilever Mount

Primary Arms Micro Dot With Fixed Base
Pick whichever $10 mount you want - either medium height for absolute co-witness or high for lower 1/3.

The Bushnell TRS-25 is a good option too. As for the "further out shots," iron sights will work for distances farther than the useful range of the .22LR round.

Primary Arms also make a 3x and 6x magnifier if you decide you want to add one later.
Primary Arms 3X Red Dot Magnifier (GEN III)
Primary Arms 6X Magnifier Gen II

At that range you really don't need a magnified optic. Something with a dot smaller than 5 MOA would probably be helpful if you're wanting to shoot bullseyes. I have a Bushnell Trophy MP on my 15-22 with a 3MOA dot. It works fine for 0-50m at my range. If you end up with more money someday (or a real AR), the Aimpoint PRO (2MOA dot) is about the best bang for your buck when it comes to 1x optics.

I recently bought the 30mm red dot with cantilever mount and the 3x magnifier (Gen III) w/quick detach mount and couldn't be happier. Great quality products for the price - about $170 including shipping. Plus, super service - ordered on Saturday afternoon, got shipping notice on Monday a.m., and received my package on Wednesday. Doesn't get any faster than that other than $30 overnight shipping.

Not sure you really need a magnifier if you only shooting short ranges but if you're gonna order, get it all at once. You can never have too many accoutrements!!!

If you're referring to the one on the PA webiste, it's a rubber cover that goes over the PA 30mm red dot. Side note: you can get the same "no brand" rubber cover on the "not to be mentioned on gun forums" website (Ebay) for allot cheaper - about $15.

I ordered the same thing from the same guy when I was first in the market for a red dot. I will send you a pm on my experience. Don't want to air it in public and get sued.

Yeah, I think im going to stick wtih teh Primary Arms 30mm.. its cheap and perfect for the 15-22 from what I have read. I didn't want to dump a huge chunk of change on a red dot for a gun that only cost 400$.

Yeah, PA is good stuff. I don't have said cover, but the name and price suggest to me it is a real deal Aimpoint-brand rubber lens cover. Are $60 lens covers worth the cost on a $70 red dot? Your call.

Oh, hehe, it is. I glanced at it very quickly for the price and when I saw two I thought it was front and back separately.

Magnified red dots are not needed at 40 yards and under, even by 65 YO's like me. Red dots work better when used with both eyes open which you can't do with a 3x one or it will screw your eyes up. At that distance even when shooting 3-gun with my AR I set my scope at 1x and shoot it like a red dot with both eyes open. Heck one of my 3-gun buddies uses an unmagnified Eotech to successfully engage targets out to 300 yards.

I really like the look of hte eotech which has me holding back on my purchase. Ive seen a few sight marks get good reviews and some not so good. I don't think it needs to hold up to a lot of recoil but I wnat a quality product which keeps pointing me back to the Primary Arms but hell im not even sure which one of those I should get lol.

I'm looking at one of these as well. Don't thing I want or need the cantilever high mount but that's the only one that actually says "high". Will the "basic gsg mount" still be high enough for 1/3 cowitness?

Thanks in advance

I have the Sightmark Ultra Dual Shot Pro red dot (About $163.00 from Amazon). It isn't a bad sight, but the EoTech is a higher quality product in my opinion.

I do hope to pick up an EoTech soon, either the XPS or EXPS, but I want to make sure that the one I get has the absolute co-witness first.

I've got the Primary Arms on my 15-22 and am very happy with it.

For the price, (under $80 delivered, including mount), it was the best bang for the buck. In FL, on light sand or a white target, on a bright day, the dot can be sometimes hard to pick up. However, for the 99% of the time, it is just fine. The mount you see here will co-witness fine on an absolute co-witness for the "fixed" sights. For the Magpul PTS flip ups, the co-witness is about a lower 1/3 co-witness.

For the next price up, I would look at the Bushness TRS25 (I think the number is). A little more than that is the Vortex Bright Red Dot. (The two color sight is a little less bright than the single bright red). And, for the upper range closer to the $200 is the Lucid HS7 that has a great reputation.

For the 15-22?? I think the Primary Arms would do everything you need for a great price.

In comparison, I have an Aimpoint PRO on my "full size" AR. The Primary Arms is nowhere near as bright.... but was not going to spend as much on the sight as I did on the rifle.

Have a great time with the S&W 15-22!!!!
