Default AFG II placement

What is the consensus of placement for the AFG II on the 15-22? I see many on the forum have it at the far end of the rail, while others have it as close to the magazine as possible. Is it a difference in arm length that determines placement, or is there some advantage to one placement or the other?

Mine is closer to the front of the hand guard. Just put it where it feels most comfortable for you.

Some say that placing it at the very front gives better control when tracking moving targets are moving between multiple targets.

Personally, put it where it's the most comfortable for you. Mine is currently in the middle with my stock in the midpoint on the buffer tube. When the stock was in the rearward position, my AFGII was at the rear of the quad rail.

Wherever it's most comfortable and benefits your grip. I placed mine in my junk drawer.

I too had taken mine off until I saw the following review. Colion demonstrates one of the newer shooting grips, with your arm fully extended. Once I tried this, I liked it & put my grip all the way forward on the rails. Even though he doesn't use the angled grip, it works well with this technique.

Slide it on the rail and move it up and down the rail with the rifle on your shoulder in firing position. When you hit the sweet spot you will know it. Tighten her up.

holding your rifle closer to the end of the barrel, will give you better control, and less of an axis/pivot point that will hurt you (for aiming). holding your rifle at or near the magazine well, or simply holding the magazine itself - gives the rifle an axis as to which bob up and down. it will be hard to keep your rifle steady (especially while moving). its the same reason i dont like extended mags - it causes an axis if you want to rest your rifle on a stand/table/

I have mine about an inch and a half from the end of the rail, and I cut a small part of the AFG off to let it blend seamlessly with the rail covers. This feels more natural to me and is more comfortable. In the end, it's whatever feels best to you. Click on the pic for a larger version.

Putting it near the front end is preferable for competition use in speed shooting due to the previously mentioned reasons. I used one that way for awhile then took it off as I found that I could drive the gun faster with precision without it on there, same as my 3-gun AR.

Anyone use one of these and have a lot of pain in the wrist that is holding the AFG?

I got one for my M4 Carbine but had to get rid of it, no matter where I placed it, the way I had to kink my wrist to hold it absolutely killed my wrist.

Like many have said here, having it near the end of the handguard makes lateral control a lot better. I have mine near the end as well, like this (not my carbine) . . . .

I'm getting set up for Ruger Rimfire competition, but I still need to find a match somewhere near where I live. I thought I was finished customizing my carbine, but last night I replaced my plain rail ladders with Magpul XTM enhanced rail panels. I can get a more comfortable grip on the handguard now.

Both the Lewistown Pistol Club and the Silver Lake Rod and Gun Club in PA hold Ruger Rimfire matches based on info from Ruger. Ontelaunee Rod and Gun Club in New Tripoli used to have a big yearly regional event but last year hosted the World Championship and I think the club is taking this year off. Many of the PA clubs shoot the PA Steel league and that is similar to RR events.
As for your 15-22 think about getting the Tacticool22 tools and putting a real AR handguard on the 15-22. I have tried several and currently use an AP Custom Carbon Fiber modular handguard.
