So ive been wanting to remove the flash hider for my new aquired 22 supressor.I could not get it to budge what so ever.so i heated it up still wouldnt move.I ended up having to take a dremel and cut it off.let me tell you that thing didnt give up without a fight.

Are these always put on this tight?

You cut it off with a Dremel tool?

Wow. Usually a barrel vise and a bit of heat and they will come right off. Did you have it in a vise while you were trying to unscrew it? If not, you may be in for some problems. Several people have twisted the barrel when trying to remove the flash hider without a barrel vise and the results are not good. Usually prompts a trip back to S&W. This is the first time I have heard of someone cutting it off.

yup had it clamped up tight and the barrel couldn't move.

heated it up with a propane torch pretty hot and it wouldn't move.So I cut a notch right before hitting the threads and cracked it in half.

Cutting a notch and splitting it may seem severe but at least you got it off without rotating the barrel and damaging the upper.

Wow, must have had some thread locker on it. Mayble A LOT of it.

I'm not trying to sound like smart-a##, but you were trying to loosen it in correct direction? It should of came off with light rap on your wrench with a small hammer.

yes im an idiot and i wasnt smart enough to put my gun in a vice and use a torch to heat it up. so i must not know how to turn a wrench.and i must be so stupid that i was able to cut that thing off without screwing up the threads.

Well, see, eric, there is your problem. If you just would have done the things you admitted above you did not do, and you were smart enough to do the things you mentioned you were not smart enough to indeed do, it would have eliminated the need for you to hide behind a keyboard and position yourself to be six inches taller than you most certainly are.

It twists off counter clock wise from the muzzle's side correct?

I have my vice clamps on order.

Looking at the muzzle ... Left-loose; right-tight.

No need to get shirty; lots of folks don't know which way the barrels are threaded.

As said, not stupid question at all. My original 80's FN-FAL is reverse thread. Thankfully I read up on it and learned before I started pounding on it. Back then, it would have been expensive to replace stuff on a silly mistake.

I truly appreciate the comments Eric as I had thoughts of replacing my hider with a Wilson combat. I bought a barrel wrench and vise from Tacticool but now I think a bottle of aspirin and invitation to Bubba and his muscles might be appropriate. Your experience will aid greatly when I begin what I had hoped would be a simple project. Maybe the flash hider will get lost in the mail.

the flash hider is threaded in 1/2x28 not going to be left handed threads.

I guess I was stupid for looking that up too before I even bought the gun so I knew my suppressor would mount to it.

I wrapped up the barrel in some cloth, put some wood on either side, clamped it in a vise, and put a wrench on the flash hider and simply cranked it off.

My reason for removal was so I could install an A2-style front sight. Once done, I just put the flash hider back on and tightened. Seemed simple.

I think that was sarcasm, right? It seemed to have confused some people. Maybe use the "/s" designation next time (and sarcasm doesn't always come through on the internet). In any case, no one really knows how familiar you are with the 15-22 or how much you've already read up on it. If you had read here or a number of other forums you'd have found that the flash hider on the 15-22 appears to be torqued on very tight, with both a crush washer and thread locker. More than one person has tweaked the upper receiver trying to remove the flash hider.

That really is a S&W problem. Selling the 15-22 with a threaded barrel as a feature, then making it difficult for the common user to remove the flash hider so they can use the threads for their own needs. Even the more knowledgeable users (in particular those with regular AR-15s) could have issues removing the flash hider since they might have an upper receiver vice block and not even think about clamping the barrel. I don't believe it's even mentioned in the manual. Luckily they have amazing customer service, so even if someone does manage to mess up the the receiver they will get it fixed up pretty quickly and without cost to the owner.

Yeah, I had a bitch of a time getting if off with some home made vise grips I made from a pair of 2x4 blocks. I almost gave up but you just gotta tighten the hell out of it to the point of almost breaking the wood. It was a pain getting off and I don't know why the need for S&W to torque that thing down so much.

I took a flash Hider off for a friend, even using the barrel vise and heat, it was wickedly tight. Honestly thought the vise was going to crush the barrel before the FH came loose.

I unscrewed mine by hand. Really, no lie. I bought the clamp thingee to put in my vice. I clamped everything down and then discovered that it had been loose. I think I had close to 10,000 rounds through mine at the time.
