Should I Sell It?
Hi guys, I've had a lot of fun with my 15-22, but I am very tempted to sell it so I can afford a quality upper, and make an aimpoint's price sting a little less. I know some of you might tell me to keep it, I agree it is a very important training aid. But here is the thing, I haven't seen any ammo locally since Sandy Hook believe it or not.. Yet all I see is tons of .223/5.56 in my area (steel cased too which is rather cheap!).
Would it be worth selling to fund a real AR15? I'm a college student on a limited budget at the moment and I'm only working auxiliary hours. I see conversion kits that go for $150 or so, and honestly the accuracy wouldn't be a huge deal if I used one. (I mostly shoot at 25 foot ranges in my area anyways.)
But part of my issue is that the 15-22 is just a very nice looking paper weight at this point. It's easier to find 9mm in my area than 22lr <.<
Looking to finish my Spike's Lower with a Spike's Upper and an Aimpoint Pro (Or an M&P Sport and Aimpoint Pro, I could always use the spike's toward a pistol build down the road idk). If I get on a department later this year I could always buy a new 15-22 (and hopefully the ammo problem will be solved)
I guess I'm just thinking out loud here. Anyone?

I wouldn't feel guilty about selling it. Ammo will come back around again soon but if you want to do some shooting now, go for it. It's not like these rifles have disappeared off the face of the earth, you will probably be able to find another one even if it is years down the road.

Sell it and buy a 22 upper for one of your lowers when you can.

If you are on a limited budget, shooting .223 doesn't make much sense to me. By watching this site, I have picked up plenty of .22lr recently... just got in 2000 rounds of M-22 a few days ago from Cabela's at .06 delivered (I believe). Most of my .223/5.56 is 75 cents or more but bet could find some for about 50 cents. So basically I can shoot my 15-22 10 times as much as my AR... for the same money.
I will sell you 1000 of those m-22s for cost if you send me a PM.

IMO, they are junk and not worth the money. I had one & it was horrible. Inaccuracy is only one issue. FTF & FTE are big concerns.

Can't really use a 22lr for home defense though. Also 2.23/5.56 isnt bad every now and then. I just cant afford buying an upper, and aimpoint in the same time frame. I go shooting once a month so I kind of scavenge ammo when I came across it. If I shoot a little less I'm not too worried my friend.
I've been finding 2.23/5.56 for 50 cents or so. The Steel cased stuff is only costing me 28 cents a round O_o
Sadly it seems cheaper than buying 9mm currently <.<
Part of the reason I want the real thing currently. The 15-22 is great, but I think it's time to step up. So no worries I say shoot what you have. It would only last me a little while and I'll be in the same situation imo.
I kind of want to finish my AR15 while things are still cooled off, there is no telling when the anti's will drive up prices again by inducing a panic.

SELL IT?
Short answer NO. it's not like a classic wheelgun you can buy, use for 30 years and sell for a big profit. why loose money twice? it's not gonna get you enough to buy a real good 223. 22 lr IS available with some diligence & not likely the exact kind you want, but it can be found and enjoyed. keep it until you save up and are able to get the 223 you really want, then sell, MAYBE.

If you're selling it because you can't find ammo, keep an eye on the In Stock Ammo thread here.
Primary Arms is selling 1522 for $400, so you'd be lucky to get enough from selling yours to fund the Aimpoint Pro.

I'm fine with either Spike's or BCM, I don't need anything else "higher tier" imo. Every little bit seems to count.
I have the rifle+ lots of extras. I might have an offer going for $550 already.

I guess being a poor college student ain't what it used to be when I was in your shoes. Back then, heck even now, I would rather pay .06 as opposed to .50 or maybe .28 for every trigger pull. That is 4 to 10 times more shooting pleasure. Plus seems like you are set on putting more money into a different gun.
Sorry. I misunderstood your condition. If you can afford all that then get you an AR and have a ball. They are fun... but expensive. My offer is withdrawn.

Is .22lr still that hard to find? I have 15,000 rounds of it left. Have not been out in a while to shoot any of it, but I thought the .22lr shortage would have passed by now. I have been out shooting other calibers, but I do love my .22's. If the price and availability dictates the use of .223-5.56 then I would make the switch. A gun is not much good if you don't have ammo to feed it. The current administration can't take your gun, but they can control how much ammo is on the market. Try and buy 9mm in bulk.

I have a lot of 22LR ammo but the 15-22 is a plinker and only so so accurate so if you want to sell it to get an AR do it as the prices and availability of the AR have dropped and they are a available. I haven't sold my S&W 15-22 but I bought this DPMS AR 15 for $590 at Wal-Mart and it shoots 1.5 inches at 100 yards. So if you want a more accurate rifle and can either reload or buy 223 ammo get an AR.

1. if you follow the thread on here, you will find plenty .22lr ammo. i just scored 1,000 M*22 ammo for $58(shipped) from cabela's. and a few months ago i found 1,575 Fiochie for 149.99(shipped). and before that i found the same deal of 1,000 M*22 for $58(shipped). in just those 3 deals = 3,575 rounds. i kept any eye on cabela's/natches,etc and found deals here & there and scored a few more couple hundred. all in all, during this deep ammo crisis i scored well over 4,000 rounds for good/fair prices.
2. it seems like you have your heart on having .223/5.56 stamped on your gun. if thats the deal, do it. w/e makes you happy. just dont lie to yourself: a) that .22lr is impossible to find, b) that you cant protect your home with .22lr, and c) that a conversion kit will be as good as this rifle.
3. you dont make sense. you are looking to save money, so you go to a more expensive round, are looking at aimpoint(versus cheaper alternatives). just be honest with yourself, and things will be more clear for you.

the $300-$500 that you will get for this rifle, can be had simply by working 1 month bouncing at some local night club. believe me, thats how i funded this rifle. you go to any manager and tell him you are OTJ(current/prior, aux/etc) and you will have it on the spot. just peruse through craigslist- tons of local clubs are looking for normal guys.

Sell it. I was in the exact same situation 1 year ago. I am also in college, I am 21 now. I was low on money back then and to be honest, didn't think I wanted an AR-15 till way later.
I came up with the idea of selling the 15-22 (And my gamo whisper air rifle) and using the money top buy a Rock River AR-15 and getting a .22 conversion bolt later to give me that AR in .22 that I still loved. I could not have made a better decision.
I now run my stainless steel CMMG .22 conversion in my AR with a Taccom Buffer, and 15-22 mag adapter so I can use those good old 15-22 mags in my AR with the conversion. It runs flawlessly. Any problems I have had had been failure to fires (bad primers).
In my specific AR with the heavy profile barrel, I got the same accuracy I did with the 15-22, about 3moa with CCI Blazers at 100 yards. A lot of people will bring in twist rate. 3moa is 3moa to me. If accuracy is there, I'm fine with it.
Also, if I could do it all over again, I would build a rifle to how I like it configured. My rock river is barely a rock river anymore. I sold and swapped parts.
Good luck!

Sell it and finish the AR; you will be able to replace in later on down the road. I've sold 2 plus a 15-22 pistol, my 3rd rifle is in the safe along with my grand daughters pink camo version. These 2 are the best and most accurate of the ones I've had.

If you need an AR buy an AR, its as simple as that. I have 4 .22 rifles including two 15-22s, a Rem 597, and a .22 AR, but I use them in competition. Also have a custom 3-gun AR and a long range .308 bolt gun. Plus I just built a custom 14.5" barreled AR and working on an 11.5" one that will be and SBR and suppressed. Like most living in the People's Republic of Maryland most of us got nervous and bought up a bunch of stuff so we could build what we wanted after the Oct. 1 dealine. I still have one lower to build into something and I have a 6.8mm SPC II upper on the way for that one. I plan on have as many as 6 uppers for the 3 complete lowers I have.

Capt, you can still come back and visit the 15-22 guys while making the new build, or visit the SW 15 forum for help/ advice.

Wow dude, looks nice!
Is that Foliage Green? Mine looks similar but with OD green. Looks great, buy the CMMG SS .22 conversion when .22 prices come back down, you'll love it!

Yes it is Foliage, I kind of prefer it to OD Green or FDE. IMO it's kind of like the best of both. Atleast for my area. There are no deserts here, but there are corn fields, forest preserves, and well the cement jungle. Foliage seems to blend in pretty well and it also depends on the lighting as well. I guess if we are talking SHTF.. Plus I guess I like the color, when pictures are taken in a certain light it also looks gray-ish
