GREAT!!!! Over 4,000 rounds of my stash right now is M22. I better go dig it out and see if any of them are on the recall list.
On a positive note, I am very thankful for the info.

Hmmm...I just checked all of my M-22 and I have 1,000 rounds with a Lot number '2GD52L'. Is that the 'GD52L' recalled Lot number or a different Lot number?
I guess I'll have to call them to know for sure...

Swell. I keep mine loose, in ziploc bags in steel ammo cans. I typically stock Federal 510s this way.
For some unexplicable reason, the M-22 I bought (on sale, 3 years ago) is still in the boxes, and not those lot numbers. Woo Hoo!
Never expected this sort of thing. I guess I should rethink my storage idea.
Thanks for the heads-up!

It's not the first time Winchester has recalled lots of .22lr for double powder charges. When I did a search this morning some old recall info was in the results.

Thanks for posting, I have 2000 rnds that have the bad lot numbers. This includes the 120 rnds in my range bag that I was going to shoot at the range today. I had someone confirm the lot numbers in my stash after seeing your post. Hopefully they replace instead of refunding or giving some sort of coupon.

Just spoke to a lady at Winchester. My Lot '2GD52L' is the recalled lot. They should clarify that on their website.
She issued a UPS call tag. She said that they will be sending a check for the ammo...not replacing the recalled ammo with good.

That sucks, but a check is better than a voucher for buying more non existent ammo.
What price is the check being cut for I would assume MSRP but don't know what that is for M22.

How do they determine the price of the check? By their MSRP? The only M-22 Ive bought has been at regular price but I would be soooo pissed if I had over payed for it and just lost out...

Just check... none in my Stash
I would recommend against loose Ammo (removed from boxes) in ammo cans and such... For this exact reason... these things do happen, and If you determine it was a factory Round Issue, and have No Box for said Round... it could be real tuff to Pin anything on the Manufacturer...
I keep mine in Boxes... and if I do Load up a bunch.. the empties are in a box in my Loading room Just In case..
great Info OP... thanks for the Heads Up

Winchester should just send out a sticker relabeling them as "Stingers"
Sorry to here this. Better safe than ammo rich.

This is very interesting. I never in my wildest imagination would have guessed there was actually room to double-charge .22LR. It seems natural that little case was full.
That recalled M22 might be a real performer in a bolt rifle!

This is probably a dumb question but... can't you weight one of the bullets and then take it apart and check for a double charge. If it is correct then take that weight and multiply it by say like 10 and then weigh 10 bullets at a time to check for a double charge?
I only ask because of how hard .22 ammo is to get it would kill me if I had to send any of it back even if it took me a couple of weeks to weigh bullet by bullet.
Again sorry if this is a stupid question but I don't reload and am still learning!

Insist on replacement, not $$
I have 1k of the recalled ammo as well. I called in and when she said they would issue a check I complained that it would be almost impossible to replace.
By sending in a copy of your drivers license and answering in writing 2 questions (they will email you) having to do with legally able to possess, and they will be replacing it instead.
I have already emailed over the requested items, ammo will be picked up tomorrow.
Make a fuss, they know how difficult it is to obtain... make them replace it!

All 4,000 rounds are gtg here. Thankfully.
Although I did put the cart before the horse and inquired through the Winchester website about what they are doing for the recalled ammo, received a phone call at 12:58 from a CSR from Winchester about my inquiry. Although I didn't need her help, that is good CS as far as I'm concerned.

When we were kids.....and DONT TRY THIS AT HOME!!! We use to double up .22 rounds and shoot them all the time. Never once had an issue, but this was 35 years ago....
I will look over my M-22, but if anyone thinks of trading me a check for mine, they are MISTAKEN, because it isn't happening!

Maybe, but do not take a chance. If you have the affected lot numbers send them back.

Bummer!
I have a 1,000 round pack 2GD52L, and maybe 200-300 rounds left out of a 1,000 round pack of 3GD52L.
Didn't notice anything wrong with what we have shot so far in various rifles.
http://www.winchester.com/library/ne...rt-recall.aspx
Called them and they are sending out a UPS call tag for my ammo, and will send me new ammo. Can't ask for anything better than that considering the situation.

Glad you didn't have any issues with the 700-800rds you fired!
I have no idea how many rounds are in a 'Lot'...but I image it's more than I could store properly! I'm sure they have no way of knowing what percentage of rounds in the recalled Lots are double charged...just that there are some double charged rounds in there.

Indeed.. I got caught on the AFE 45ACP recall a few years ago. 3000 rounds and no boxes. The were good about it and sent out a pickup and a replacement a few weeks later..

I checked some of my stock and have a fair amount of the recalled ammo. I haven't been able to get through to Winchester yet. But I do not want a check, I want more ammo. And living in the soviet state of New York, they cannot ship ammo to me. And it is impossible to find locally. Plus, if I were inclined, I could sell this recalled ammo on the street for three or four times what the retail price is and what Winchester is likely to refund me. Not that I would do that.
I think I may try to weigh each round to see if I can find any over loaded ones in my boxes. I have access to a precision balance.

Since the hoarding started I put most of my .22 LR ammo in one box. Kinda surprised how much I had.
I only have one box of the M-22. Not in that lot. But the adventurer in me, the one who has run with scissors, kinda wants to shoot some. I mean, really, how much pressure can a double charged .22 LR produce?
Finally, a +P Rimfire.
Cool.
Guess I'm just a troublemaker.

There is usually enough variation in just case+primer weight to make this impractical.

In a quality bolt action, you might get away with it. Same with a quality single shot. In the typical lever action, very iffy. In a semi-auto you are risking blowing the bolt back hard enough to damage the action, at the very least. In a pistol of any kind except a Contender-style single shot, you risk serious damage to your shooting hand, at the very least.
I'll pass, thank you.

The 22LR case would rupture before anything else, and even if the action wasn't damaged it would have to vent the gases somewhere. In some actions, that venting would be in a direction that is very, very bad news for the shooter.

I am curious if the ammo retailers will need to return their M-22 to Winchester or are the lot numbers printed on the outside of the shipping boxes?

Dang it, 1,200 rounds are part of this recall. But, 800 of them did not cause any problems.

Glad I saw this when I did!
I inventory all of my ammo in early Feb and would have been heated to have found out afterwards and had to do it again!
Luckily, all of my M-22 is GTG.

Whoever has recalled ammo, when did you purchase it? Is there a certain month these were made or sold?
