Default Shortened Barrel?

Ok, to throw this out first, I am in no way interested in the $200 BATF stamp for this. That said, I was thinking of getting my barrel shortened, having a flash hider pinned and welded for the 16" overall length and running something like a 15" troy rail (If I can find something that costs less than I paid for the rifle).. This is purely for looks, no real practical advantage I can see. Has anybody done this and how much of a PITA am I looking at? If you have, pics would also be nice.

If you're going to have a16" barrel anyway, run the M4 setup with an A3 upper, and stick a Yankee Hill free floating fore end on it, and a flat top gas block if you like. The Yankee Hill stuff is good quality and inexpensive to buy.
Just a thought.

Personally why not go with the $200 stamp and the wait for it to go through. By the time you cut the barrel and rethread it for the flash hider, your investing a pretty good sum for a 16 inch over all length. With the stamp you can really go for a short barrel. To most a 2 inch shorter barrel would be almost indistinguishable.

Yeah, I just don't really wanna go through the hassle for a 22. I might try to SBR a 556 gun later. I'd really like an MP5PK with a side folding stock & select fire, but that is a silly amount of $$$.

It's really too bad Smith&Wesson stopped production of the 15-22 Pistol. Looks like a fun little bugger.

It's a long wait for sure, but worth it!! I was told and now firmly believe that when you get bit by the tax stamp bug your done it becomes an acute problem

I have a 7.5" 15-22 upper waiting to go on my lower as soon as the stamp arrives (anyday now) I shot a good friend of mines and it ran great, figured it would be nice for my son to learn on too.
