Default .22lr Ammo shortage is over!...?

At least in the Denver metro area.

Even before this black box CCI sale, Walmart has had various varieties of ammo available daily.

The Lone Tree Cabelas has 100s of boxes of ammo on the shelves, not an empty 10 inch wide void with an out of stock sign. And it is shelves of multiple brands. Bricks and 100 round boxes for the past month.

Bass Pro, Dicks and Gander Mountain are the same as Cabelas.

Is this isolated to the Denver market? Or is it becoming the norm in your area?

I don't check the local gun stores since they sold .22lr and guns at elevated prices during this shortage while the big box stores kept it at MSRP.

Not over completely down here, but I do notice the number of people waiting outside of Gander at 8:45 AM is a fraction of what it used to be. It's still hard to get any at Wal Mart since they have no predictable shipment schedule.

I think once the waiting lines at dept. stores begins to diminish, and when inflated prices at gun shows and on auction sites drops significantly, then the end of the shortage will be near.

If i had to guess, I would say it's still going to be a year or two before it starts to remain on shelves all week long. Just my opinion, though.

I can't say as far as WalMart or Gander Mtn, but I can generally find some in my local shop.

I can always find it online, but the price is still high.

Maybe they are buying something other than 22lr in Colorado? I wouldn't say the shortage is over. It is getting better in some areas. I haven't bought locally in a while. I have passed up 22lr in my big box stores. I would buy everything when I saw it weather I needed it or not, just to keep the flippers(non shooters) from making a profit. When the shelves are overloaded with 22lr and they have sales on 22lr. That's when the shortage will be over. Even then, people will stock on 22lr to make a huge profit on the next panic.

Massachusetts Walmarts apparently had a weekend sale of CCI SV this weekend. From what we can tell multiple stores had some number of boxes of 100-rd packs and they seem to have started the sale at 8am yesterday. Three box limit of course.

Coincidentally I was at an out-of-the way store in Western MA that had huge quantities of ammo. including multiple flavors of CCI (just no SV). Said he had a distributor who takes care of him.

In the last several weeks I have seen more 22lr at Cabelas than I have in a while.
Two things to keep in mind. 1 They will do their best to keep a supply of 22lr so people come in and buy their needs for hunting season coming up. 2- the Nov. 4, elections.
I believe there is a strong connection between 2 and supply.
I have not heard much talk on local or national news in months re. gun control. The politicians know that that is a soar topic with many of us. I've seen 9mm and 38 spl in good supply lately as well as 22lr.
Maybe I'm wrong. I don't think so. Buy it while you can.
Lets see what happens after the election , and decide then if the ammo shortage is ending.
What are your thoughts.

Yeah, I was wondering if anyone thought the outcome of the midterm election might have an effect on the ammo shortage and people's decisions on 22LR. I guess if Republicans end up regaining the Senate, then ammo buying behavior for some might be changed at least temporarily.

There is the Christmas rush a lot of 22 firearms and ammo are given as Christmas presents;that will cause another slowdown, if you haven't noticed by now.

Absolutely nailed it. This behavior led to me putting my 15-22 purchase off for a year. I recently purchased my rifle and it's because I'm seeing the flip start...but only start. We have a long way to go but it's nice to see people not giving in to the morons trying to make a sick profit off of the ammo scare.

An employee asked me once why I was on the phone when I was looking at ammo. I told him I was checking gunbot.net to see the lowest going rate per round. If they were more than 1 penny above that, I would pass on the 22 and 5 cents on 223/556.

It's out there more, but the prices are still high. My local Dicks almost always has $39 bricks of CCI Standard. One limit. Not too bad. My local Wal-Mart's are always empty. When Wal-Mart has full shelves of multiple varieties of 22lr at their pricing I will say it's over. We have a ways to go.

Hmmmm, how much time and effort did you exert to save a penny or two a round to shoot out of your 17, 63 or 617?

I check local stores and the various Wal-Marts on a routine basis. No .22 LR ammunition has been available anywhere within a 70 mile radius since I can't remember when, it's been close to two years. What ammo I have found has been online at various retailers. The price w/ discounts, shipping specials, etc. is sometimes under $.07/rd. delivered. Mostly if one can find it for $.10/rd. delivered then that's about the best that can be done. If someone is able to find it for less, good for them but it is the exception.

Are prices coming down? Hopefully. But I'm not going to hold my breath. And I'm not going to fiddle around doing other things and not going to the range just because .22LR ammunition is no longer available at $.04-.05/rds. I didn't buy my 18-3 for a desk weight. I didn't buy my 15-22 for a wall decoration. I bought them to shoot. If it cost $.07 or .10/rd. to shoot these guns, then that's just what it will cost. No one sits around and refuses to shoot their 9mm's, .40's or .45 ACP's just because a box of ammo cost them $10 or 12 or more dollars. They buy the ammo and shoot it. No one refuses to shoot their M-1's just because USGI M-2 now cost more than the once cheap prices of surplus. They buy the ammo or handload it and shoot. If .22 LR could be handloaded, people would do it. They can't. So, people are buying the stuff and shooting it. The higher prices are the reality of a world where the dollar no longer counts like it used to. Service jobs just don't produce the same economy as actual blue collar production jobs.

I will pay $0.05 per round for a Federal or Remington bulk pack or $0.09 per round for CCI Mini-Mags. Wal Mart and Gander Mountain are the only retail options in my relatively small town, so those are the only places I will shop. I just refuse to buy from the people who buy it all up so they can sell it for 2-3 times the market price. For that reason I don't support any of the small local gun stores around here. I would 'bite the bullet' so to speak and go to more expensive .223 for plinking before I supported the gougers. Just out of principle.

I never really thought of there being a shortage of 22LR.I totally gave up on the local brick and mortar stores. It wasn't worth my time or gas to go there and if lucky enough to find any be limited to a box or two.

So what if I pay a penny or two more per round. The going rate for 22LR seems to be around 10c/rd.It is in abundance all over the internet and without restrictions on how much you want. There's no sales tax and the shipping cost is reasonable if you buy in large quantities.

A lot of people have their quirks about the price they are willing to pay or a specific brand they can use.If that's the case then you'll just have to deal with it or do without.I'm fortunate enough to have various guns that will eat whatever is available so I'm never without something to shoot.

Not putting anyone down because of the way they deal with things.I just have my own way of working around these yahoos that are making our lives difficult.

A few minutes on the I-net is no time at all to check to see if you are paying more than you should at the store for the item they have in stock.

I do the same at all brick and mortar stores on big ticket items, especially electronics. I even did it at the car dealer. I showed them a dealer in KY that had the exact same new car that was on their lot for $8,000 less. When they wouldn't budge, I said a plane ticket and gas to drive home was ~$500 and said that was all I was willing to move and started leaving. That was enough to get the car at the KY low price. Unfortunately Denver is a high cost market and cars are market up significantly from those in less economically advantaged areas.

Just back from gun show and 200 rounds of CCI was $50 an they had a few boxes left. Actual prices at gun show I thought were at an all time high all about the place. Obviously they hadn't heard all the good news about lower prices - there. Saw an $1800 dollar AR15 with fluted barrel and some nice stuff on it.

CCI in a 200 round box sounds like .22WMR. $50 would be a market price for that in my neighborhood.

Have not seen .22LR in a 200 round box (300, yes)

Wow, I just ordered 700 rounds of CCI Mini-Mags for $7.99 per 100rd box and had it shipped to the local store (free shipping). I can't imagine paying 3 X's for ammo that's already pretty expensive at its retail price. It's still hard for me to imagine there are so many people out there who will pay these absurd prices.

I think this happened last year around this time a little showed up at the WM & such then it was gone & rare as hens teeth again.
I would not buy another 15-22 at this time either. Thinking about getting the grandson a pump up air rifle instead.

Picked up some of the elusive Black Box CCI SV tonight. And a box of 325 count Federal AutoMatch. The Federal came out to 6.5 cents per round and has worked well in the past in everything I have. The CCI was 7.9 cents per round. Will have to try it to see if it lives up to past performances.

This week is the first week in two years that I've walked into a gun store and found .22LR for sale.

Still nothing in this small town. I don't think I have shot 100 rounds since Sandy Hook.

Once I see these readily available again then I will think the shortage is over.

Must be over. I got an email from Midway saying my 3k rounds worth of backordered .22 ammo will be shipping in the next few days.

The local Gander had these on sale back in early Spring of 2013, $99.99 each. I bought two, and that was the last time you could find it without waiting in line. Small shops & patience pays these days.

Whooa, that can of CCI at that price would probably cause a stampede worse than Wal Mart on a Black Friday at my local Gander! I imagine there are people around here who would sooner line up for that CCI than a heavily discounted HD television.

The standard for me is my LGS once again selling Federal Champions by the case! In November of '12 they had three pallets of the stuff at $170/case. When I went back three weeks later for two more cases there was NO .22 LR in the store --- and hasn't been since.

I am seeing 22 ammo pop up at a lot of places that I have not seen before.
The problem is and will continue to be the stock piling of ammo.
Look at the 22 ammo thread on here. It appears and is gone in from 15 minutes to a couple of hours.
Until people change their mind set, it will continue with the panic buying.
Some of these people who are buying, state that they have 50,000 rounds of 22 and they want more.
I just saw some today at a local hardware store in 500 round and 333 round packs, which I have never noticed there before.

In recent weeks I have also bought Fed AM 325 rd packs from Midway for $16.99 and CCI Blazer 500 rd bricks for $20.99. The 3k back order set to arrive at the end of this week includes an ammo case of 1575 rounds of Fiochi 40g HV for $99, 1000 rounds of Win M-22 for $49.99 and 500 CCI MiniMag 40g for $6.69x5.

Cabelas has multiple CCI, Winchester and Remington packs in stock daily in Denver. 50, 100, 300, 333, 500 & 555 packs. I live virtually next door to the Lone Tree, CO store. I have plenty, but pick up some almost daily for co-workers and family on my way home from work.

I was just in West Lafayette, IN and I went to Walmart to grab a few forgotten supplies and wandered by the ammo case. It had a few hundred boxes of CCI 100 mini mag packs and a few Winchester 555 packs.

Online is even easier using gunbot.

Cabelas has had plenty online lately. Gander had CCI Mini Mags online and when I went to pick up my order they had about 10 sleeves of 500 on the shelf. Academy actually had the CCI Mini Mag 1600 round Plano online yesterday that I snagged. I posted it on the ammo thread, and I hope some of the people here picked them up also. I'm finally at the point now where I can be picky I what I'm buying now. Before I was just happy to buy anything that went bang. So maybe things are getting better. Anyone the says they can't find 22's now just are not looking or trying.

I tried to grab one of those 1600pk's, but when I went online (about 3 minutes after you posted), it said in-store only. Don't know if it does that when they sell out online, but I suspect that's what happened. Oh well maybe next time

Yes, they didn't last long. And I'm not sure how long they were on there when I found them. I was really looking for WMR ammo and stumbled on the 1600 pack. I was surprised I managed to get through checkout with Academy. Many times I have put things in my cart and by the time I get me CC info in and press checkout it says out of stock. I rushed through the checkout process so fast I forgot to get the WMR they had. I hate leaving my CC on file with these companies with all the hacking going on. But I suppose if I did I might be more successful.

Someone mentioned earlier in this thread that Christmas could cause a rush on 22 ammo. I'm noticing A LOT of 22 rifles (mostly high capacity like the M&P 15-22) on sale right now. I wonder if this really will contribute to more empty shelves until next year?

I have about 15K rounds of 22LR in my safe, so I don't actively shop for more right now. But a couple of days ago I walked into a local Academy store for some hiking socks. Just our of curiosity I walked to the gun counter and looked up to where they keep the .22. Hey! I though, there are 10-12 boxes of 300 ct. CCI up there. Then I noticed three of the 1600 round mini mag ammo cans. I didn't need it, but hey . . . mini mags. Limit one, so I left with one. Oh . . . $119.99 or 23.99 for the 300 round boxes.

The shortage isn't over, but I have enough to last my son and I a year or so without buying any more.

CCI is the only .22lr i will buy considering i have more than enough to get through the next few elections. And i can find it every few days around here. Any other .22lr, u can just walk into wal-mart and buy all u want. No one buys it much around here anymore. I guess because they dont have any room to store any more. Much like me though, people tend to lean towards the CCI. When it shows up, its gone in a few days. But usually back in a few more days.

Cabelas had bricks out today instead of 50 round boxes. The Walmart had Winchester 555 boxes. People were walking by the ammo and not taking, which was surprising. Most were going for the discounted .223 next to the 22.

Bringing an old thread back to life. Here is a link to an article dated July 2015 predicting the end to the 22 ammo shortage. Do you believe it?

I believe things are normalizing - though the new normal price may be over 8 cents per round. I was surprised at how long Cabelas kept mini-mags in stock even with their increase limit of 5. I think that's a very good sign. Of course, 6 cents or less for mini-mags would be better but that will probably take a while if ever.

I was able to score 1,000 rounds of CCI SV .22 (500 from two different LGS') and thought that was pretty good. I'll have to check my big box stores as I'd like to have a little more on hand.

The two Cabelas stores in the Minneapolis/St Paul metro area have upped their limits on the amounts of .22lr ammo that can be purchased and have had good amounts of .22lr ammo )including several different bricks) on the shelves for about 6 weeks now. Prices are still higer than 5 years ago.

The Springfield Ore. Cabelas store recently had 100 rd packs of RGB's, 100 rd packs of Winchester red box @ $10.00 and CCI 50rd boxes @ $5.00. Also 500 rd bricks of, (I don't remember) @ $65.00. Five dollars for 50 average appears to be the new normal around this area.

I went to Cabela's in Glendale, AZ on Monday. They had a bunch of .22 LR ammo at around $29 a brick. I didn't buy any because I don't need them. 6 months ago I would have bought the limit regardless. Very telling.

Still having a hard time finding them locally. The two Walmart stores by me never have any. The sporting goods clerks, at both stores, tell me they still have the bullet grabbers lining up at 6 am waiting for 22lr's to be put out at 7. One of the clerks told me he is really sick of seeing the same 8-10 guys every morning, but says there is nothing he can do about it. Kind of sad. As for local gun stores, the only one that has any is the pawn shop and they want $65 for a brick of 400 American Eagle 22lr
