Default Best Fitting Butt Stock?

New guy here. Just picked up my 15-22 today. First impressions were pretty good. I had done a lot of research before the purchase and it doesn't dissapoint.

I've already started to add a few things to it to suit my needs. One area that I want to address is the butt stock. Are all of them sloppy loose?

Mine rattles around quite a bit. I was hoping that was one thing I didn't have to replace, as I don't want to spend the extra $50-$75. But, it is just too loose for me. I know that there are multiple options out there.

What would you guys recommend for a good fitting one?

Thanks

Hi and welcome to the madness.

As far as I know most butt pads have a little slop.

This is based on my own Magpul and what most others have reported in here, not by me personally trying every type of available option.

However the easiest thing as a fix seems to be an appropriately placed strip of duct tape on the buffer tube under the stock.

Simple and quick fix. Tho as to which is best ??? Black silver or green.

I don't know the answer to that but am guessing that even if you have to buy and try two or three different ones it will still be cheaper than buying new butt stocks.

Hope you sort it.

Rob.

If you want an easy fix, the duct tape method above is a great option. I went with new stocks; the MFT Minimalist and Magpul MOE/SL.

Both are very tight with no rattle in my case. There are a a lot of other options, but I really like the two I mentioned.

You make it tough. You state you want recommendations on good fitting stocks... but don't want to pay for it. So either go the cheap route & use duct tape or pony up some cash & get a replacement stock that has a friction lock.

I've never used the tape but seems logical to me that if you use enough tape to take out the wobble, you've also made it more difficult to extend or retract the stock. Granted this isn't a concern if you live in a communist state that thinks adjustable stocks are evil, but if you live in a free state, that would be a concern for me. I use a Magpul CTR, which is loose until you engage the friction lock. Then it is absolutely rock solid. You get the best of both worlds... the ability to easily adjust your stock and then lock it down when in the proper location.

What I meant was, I was hoping the factory butt stock would be tight from the factory, making it one less thing I had to purchase. I don't mind putting out the money for a quality piece though.

Thanks for the recommendations. The minimalist and magpul are both ones that I have been looking at. I saw the Blackhawk version, but for $20 I'm worried it will be a "you get what you pay for" part?

I've had the MFT Minimalist on mine at one point, as well as the CTR. Both are excellent choices. The MFT is the tightest fitting stock I've ever tried. I have the STR now, which is a heavier version of the CTR, and it also works well, but costs more. I believe that you usually get what you pay for, but MFT stock can be had for around $40, and the CTR has been that low at times lately also...shop around. Make sure you buy the Mil-Spec version of either.

I have several Magpul, which work fine, but my latest is from BCM and I like it the best.

I'm still learning here with the acronyms. I know that MFT is Mission First. What is BCM, STR and CTR?

Just about all my buttstocks rattle a bit; it's the nature of the design.

The least "rattley" stock I have found for my 15-22 is the Magpul CTR...

-

BCM is Bravo Company Manufacturing. I own several of their AR uppers and they are TOPS!

CTR is an acronym used by Magpul. It means Compact/Type Restricted.

STR is Magpul, too...it means Storage/Type Restricted.

Restricted simply means, per ITAR rules, it can't be exported to certain countries. That won't apply to you unless you're a wannabe international arms dealer.

In this TactiCool world we find ourselves in there are tons of these cute little acronyms...

I'm partial to Magpul's CTR with the .070 butt pad.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm partial to the Magpul CTR style, but still kind of like the look of the Mission First.

Now comes some more questions. I was looking up the stocks and came across a few things. I notice a lot of "air soft" stocks, or "non airsoft". Is there a way to distinctly know the difference between the two if it's not listed?

Also, just saw one that says its not "PTS"? What is that?

If you want a new stock because you don't like the one you have then fine, get a new stock....However i can vouch for the duct tape and its ability to completely negate any wobble (on a Magpul MOE)...it also doesn't conflict with the extending or retracting of the stock on the tube...over time doing that does tear the duct tape up somewhat...but hey its duct-tape not a friction lock.
Personally i prefer black duct tape, but i only had silver, so i went with that. However my Pa visited today and brought me some black duct tape...result!

I used black electrical tape as a quick fix while I figured out a solution for the stock. In the end I gave up looking as the tape worked wonders.

Now im rocking a slidw fire and it is looser then well some things I cant say here. But boy is it cool.

I tried the magpul moe stock and it was still loose. I returned it but Mitford that reason. I got a mission first tactical minimalist stock and it is very tight.

The Vltor IMOD Std. comes stock on the PC model, but it's ex$pen$ive and doesn't fit super tight. The B5 Bravo SOPMOD gives a nice tight fit without extra slop locks. The price is rite as well $60.

,
I did not like the idea of putting duck tape black or not on buffer tube of my camo 15-22 but I did hear about this from a poster here. I like the stock stock just fine & yes I am a penny pincher I know. But this is a great cheep fix.
Cut a strip of the softer part of the velcro 1/4 or less wide & just stick it long ways on the buffer tube, it tightens it up & it still moves smoothly.
Try it , you may find as I did that you don't need another stock.
But if not you still have almost a whole pack of velcro to use on something else you would be surprised the uses for it

You don't want it so tight you can't move it in and out...

Of course if you're in New Jersey this isn't a problem...

First would be the Safariland (Rogers) SuperStock. Sort of Magpul like stock with an adjustable lockdown lever that locks the length adjustment lever down solid. And for a really locked down stock get the Magpul Fixed Carbine Stock. You have to cut a notch across the bottom of the 15-22 fake buffer tube and slide a bolt and nut thru and tighten it down. That is what I did for a speed shooting setup on my 15-22.

Thanks guys for the comments. After some research, I ended up going with the Rogers Super-Stoc Deluxe. We'll see how it does.

I agree. If once at the length that fits me I don't care if the stock is adjustable or not as long as the slop is out. Nobody shoots my gun but me. Electrical tape works great.

Mine had too much play for my liking as well. I went with the Magpul CTR which locks down nice and snug. My wonderful lawmakers see to it that my stock cannot be adjustable and it must be pinned. Since it was going to be done once and set for quite some time, I wanted the friction lock for a little extra stability.

Oddly enough, even though the OEM stock was pinned by my FFL dealer before I could take posession, it still had quite a bit of slop in it (wiggled side to side)

Black electrical tape, 4-2inch strips works just fine. Nice and tight and still can adjust in case the wife and son want to shoot.

Although not a requirement where I live that is the reason I went with the Magpul Fixed Carbine stock. By only cutting one cross notch in the fake buffer tube the stock will not lock down at any other position on the tube.
