Default Can't lower Magpul front sight low enough?

Hi everyone, this is my first post and I am a new 15-22 owner. I got the Model M&P15-22 MOE Rifle (SKU: 811034)

I really love the rifle and the first time I took it out it was giving great groups. However, in order to zero the rifle I had to take the front site as low as it will go. Has anyone else had this experience? To those with the magpul front sight where are you setting yours? Does this indicate a problem with the build of the rifle?

Thanks for any info.

What distance are you trying to zero for?

Only 7 yards which makes me think anything further and it will be even lower.

Don't target practice with a rifle at 7 yards.

I think you are trying to sight the rifle in at a range that is too close... The AR-15 sights sit high over the bore. It is a .22lr rifle, not a spring powered bb gun. Move the target out to 25 yards and sight it in. I bet most on here will tell you that they are sighted in somewhere between 25 yard to 50 yard zero with iron sights.

That's understandable advice but if shots are grouping low at 7 yards then won't they be even lower at 25 or 50 or is this not necessarily the case?

I can't take credit for the pic... but it does help! Once you have a zero set, you can shoot at targets at different ranges than your zero, you will just need to understand the trajectory so you will know if you need to hold over or under.

Many trajectory calculators are available on the net that will give you graphs of the trajectory.... I bet someone on here already has a few set up that they could share.

Then I probably messed up a more sensible setting by trying to adjust for such a short range. I am very new to shooting as a hobby but have always loved shooting air guns so it's funny that you mentioned it. Can I ask you, for a rifle range what do you use to view the target as you zero it? Should I get small binoculars or something? I can't see the marks with such a small hole. Again, really appreciate your help and thank you.

My range has spotting scopes available... like a small telescope.

Something like these...

Bushnell - Spotting Scopes

kosai if you are sighting in your rifle at 25 yards you might be able to get a way with some splatter targets. they are black but when you shoot them they leave a bright yellow edge where the hole is making them very easy to see. That is assuming you can see at that distance. My eyes are "ok" at that range and i can see the shots enough to zero with the splatter targets. Just a thought.
Although i usually put the small splatter targets on anyways just because its easier to see your shots, zeroing or not. Congrts on the new rifle and Welcom!!

Cyphertext, while that graphic may not be yours, it explains in an instant something that it took me years to figure on my own in the days before the Internet. It also explains something that I have wasted hours trying to explain to newbies. 22's are so accurate at the 25-50 yard range that folks tend to visualize them as lasers, when we know they really aren't. That graphic should be a "sticky" and required reading for all new owners. Good job!

Spotting scope and those targets that when shot high light the hit.
