Default 20 different Ammo tested M&P15-22

Ok ladies and gents. Took my 15-22 to the 25 meter in door range Yesterday. I tested quite a few different ammos thru her ranging from $3.60 - $14 for 50 rounds. I know some will say 25 meters will not tell much. If it was my CZ 455 Varmint Evolution I would have to agree, but for this rifle it is not a bad test. I will do 50 meter later when can get to the out door range. Longest indoor I know of that is like 40 miles from me is 35 meters.

I cleaned her after each manufacturer products was shot. After cleaning I fired 25 round down range to lube the barrel a bit. I only cleaned between products in the same manufacturer's if the projectile was different. Shooting was done from a rest position, but I was shooting off a plastic gun prop and it would move a bit no matter what I done. Saying that if was shooting off a sandbag or a sled I have no thought I could have made some of the groups a hair smaller. For some of the rounds there no hope thru this rifle.

Honestly I was shooting these rounds 2 days bgroups.I did the rest just to get a feel for how she reacting with each round so I could give each as fair as a chance as I could. So after about 1800 or so rounds down range I was ready to shoot the groups.

I shot 4 groups of 5 of each ammo.

My 15-22 is basically stock. All she has is polished stock trigger to remove some of the gritty feel from. With a smoothered trigger the results could be a hair better also. She is however dressed for prom. Did most of it to add bit of weight to her.

Here is what she wears as of now:

BlackHawk Knoxx Stock (custom painted)
UTAC Rail Ladders covers (custom painted)
IProTec Nebo RM190LSR light/laser combo (custom painted)
Phoenix Technology AR skeleton hand grip (custom painted)
IMI Denfense FSG1 Support Grip (custom painted)
Melrose Lekker S&W MP15-22 Barrel Shroud
UTG 4-16x44 Accushot AO scope
KNS Non-Rotating 15-22 trigger/hammer pins

Here is the list of ammo I tested. I will put up the results later tonight.

CCI AR Tactical 40gr 1200fps
CCI Mini Mag 40gr 1235fps
CCI Blazer 40gr 1235fps
CCI Velocitor 40gr 1435fps
CCI Standard Velocity 40gr 1070fps

So, here's where I am, for this distance: shoot what you want. No statistically significant difference.

Thanks for sharing the results, not really seeing any surprises for what the rifle is.

I thought I would take a few moments to share my thoughts since I got couple replays now share a little info that I didn't post above.

First and most importantly is this small bit:

As stated I did some shooting for 2 days before I did the groups to find out how each ammo reacted in MY 15-22. The first thing I noticed was, even the lowest priced Matched ammo was more consistent then the none matched ammo. The CCI Standard Velocity and Green Tag was honestly about the same. The none match stuff had fliers way to often for MY likings.

So with those finding I decided to weigh the ammo. The none match staff was all over the place. With the match stuff being very consistent in weight. The RWS Special Match, Lapua Center X, and Eley Edge was all the most consistent and also the most costly.

So what I did was take 4 boxes of each of ammo that showed the most inconsistency and weighed them, then took 75 rounds of each ammo that was weighted (within .4gr or less) of each and put the in a bowl and picked 50 rounds out randomly. And that is what I used to do the grouping. I did this for 8 different ammo!!! The most inconvenient was the Eley Sport. The most consistent was the Lapua Center X.

So what I did was even the playing field a bit with the matched ammo for the non matched ammo. And honestly it showed in the results for some of the ammo. Not saying the 8 was just bad, as they wasn't, but not was good as the matched ammo.

Now my thoughts on just a few of the ammo in MY M&P15-22:

SubSonic:

I simply love the Eley Contact. With 42gr bullet and 1090fps it is simply great ammo. Not the most affordable, but not even close to being the most costly. This is MY ammo.

Next I really like the Winchester SubSonic 42 max. Very similar to the Contact in specs and shoots very accurate. I did match it a bit, but not nearly as inconsistent as some of the others. But it did offer 2 of the 3 FTF out of the 2500+ rounds I shot over the 3 days. It has a large size tip on the bullet. The PowerPoint 42 Max has the same bullet style, but it is copper plated and not one issue with it. The only other FTF came from the RWS Special Match. I will buy more of the SubSonic 42 Max I like it.

Best values in SubSonic Has the be the CCI Standard Velocity and Geco Semi-Auto. Simply great performance and very consistent. Have tested the Norma Tac 22 yet, it should arrive today.

SuperSonic and Hyper Velocity:

Simply you can't go wrong with CCI Mini Mags and AR Tactical. Did a little matching on both of these as will. But I will only buy AR Tactical when I.can find it at a good price. Just because it has an AR on the box lol.

I like the Eley Force, and will by one more Brick of it just to have as it looks cool. But honestly can't say it truly is worth the extra money over the Mini Mags and AR Facts. It is more consistent out the box. But either Eley is under stating the FPS them or CCI is over stating AR Tacts, Mini Mags, and Blazers. As the Force just seem to have a bit more kick to them. Could just be me.

Simply best value Blazers. You can find them for $2.50-3 50 rounds at times.
*****Honestly I think the Blazers are the best Valve of any .22LR ammo*****

My Favorite two fast rounds are now the CCI Velocitor and Winchester PowerPoint 42 Max. CCI Becuase it is more consistent the the Aguila Interceptor and the Winchester PowerPoint 42 Max is just out shoots both. Did a bit of matching on both. But the CCI and Winchester both had pretty good consistency. These two will be MY fast round. I have Stringers, I like the Velocitor much before. Simply just a more accurate round.

What I notice is MY 15-22 seems to like the heavier rounds a bit better and I have no problem with that. I now it only 2gr, but with speed and a bit more weight it can't hurt.

Next up Will be my CZ-455 at 50 and 100 meters. I will do the 15-22 at 50 also and just might do it at 100 also, just might.

Sorry for being so long winded.

I didn't either. Probably the reason it fell apart.

I agree that the Blazer is a good general choice for the money.

You did not test any of my most hated rounds, so ...

I'm surprised you found that much and that many different kinds of ammo. My last trip to gun shop ...they had two kinds and you could only buy 2 - 50 round boxes.... 100 round limit .
I'm weary of gun control through ammo shortage.

Since I shoot suppressed, I stick with subsonic. I like CCI Standard Velocity but find the Norma Tac-22 works as well & seems just a bit more accurate. I have no failures whatsoever with either. Another reason I shoot a lot of Norma is that I can relatively easily find it by the case, which is the only way I purchase my 22LR.

Honest the only thing I bought locally was:

Mini Mags (Brick)and Short Range (200 rounds) Green from one shop
Winchester SubSonic (800 rounds)from another
Blazers from Gander Mountain (Brick)
Aguila Rifle Match (600 rounds)from Academy.

The test was bought online

In the last 50 days of so in bought about 10000 rounds of the ammo you see on the list. Not on the list is The CCI Stringers and Aguila Super Maximum, X-Mas Edition CCI Mini Mag, The Signature Series Mini Mag HP and Pine Mountain Tracer rounds. If my ole really knew how much I have sent on .22lr ammo she would kill. But hi it could be worst, it could be .223 or something.

Probably because I hate them also lol.

I might do a small bulk test. The loss boxed ammo. But honestly had no desire to. But the Federal Auto Match and the Winchester M-22 are about the only ones that has my interest a bit.

Honestly the RWS family is one I want to retest. As it was right when I had to use the rest room pretty bad and I think I might have rushed thru them. As the day before the Geco Semi Auto and RWS Special Match was giving the Eley Contact a run for its money.

With the Eley Contact and Geco Auto Match there is this little duck on the bottom left corner of splatter target and his head is about the size of a pencil eraser. I could hit it with both of these with one shot 5 time in a row I did it will each. I honestly like this round and it is very consistent in weight out the box. It was honestly the best none match ammo for consistency. I liked it so much I was just about to order 2 bricks more to have on hand. But all the RWS was shooting a bit better the day before. All are from the same lot in each one. That is way I want to rest The Geco Semi Auto, It was shooting better then the Norma Match.

I was also highly surprised at how well the Winchester PowerPoint 42 Max was shooting. I originally Zeroed with CCI Standard Velocity, then I changed it to the Geco, then at the end of the second day, the day before I did the groups seeing what the Contact was doing I changed it to the Contacts. POI was pretty close for all of them, just amazes me how one would be a bit to the left and other a bit down to the right. Guess that is 22LR shooting. But what surprised when is the near 400fps more Winchester PowerPoint 42 Max was near hitting dead center like center with the Eley Contact. An yes you can hear and fell the difference when you shoot the two. The PowerPoint honest feels just like the Velocitor and Aguila Interceptor, but remember I did do some weight matching on them for more consistency. But yes I really like this round. I going to order more.

The only Failure to feed came from the Winchester SubSonic 42 Max 2 times over 3 days and once from the RWS Special Match.

You should try Federal Auto Match, it's an inexpensive sleeper. 1,102 fps from my Ruger MK II and 0.65" at 25 yards. 1,063 fps from my Kimber 1911 conversion, but I won't report accuracy since it was only fired with iron sights. Very reliable in those autos, but haven't tried it in my brand new MP 15-22.

Almost bought some today when stop in a gun shop in Atlanta. I did buy some more AR Tactical. I was very surprised to see they had AR Tacts in stock. They had like 10 boxes. I also most bought 3 but I already had 3 at the house. I stopped in to buy a brick more of blazers, but they where out. I just stocking up on the ones I like from the above test. I want at least a brick and a half of each.

My Norma Tac 22 finally showed up today. I might try the Auto Match. As of all the bulk ammo they seem to me the most highly regarded.

I didn't see it in this test. But, Federal Auto Match. I have over 1000+ rounds through my Ruger SR22 pistol, and 400 rounds of it through my new 15/22 with little to no issue. The only issues I've had with the Federal Automatch is, with the Ruger SR22, I had to dudes, and two that I had to pull the trigger a couple times. Shooting the Automatch with my 15/22, I had one stove pipe in 325 rounds that I shot, and I think that was because I did a quick blast out of the 25 round mag I had. I'll stick with Federal AutoMatch.
