My flash hider came right off
The hold back for me from even starting to go suppressed , SBR or suppressed SBR was all the problems I have read here about getting the flash hider off , an amazing thing happened , I have never even tried to take my flash hider off.
But I was cleaning 15-22 & at the end remember I had not cleaned F H I soaked it with clp scrubbed with a toothbrush twice.
I had the end of a cloth twisted inside it kind of tight & the thing just moved I felt it move & then just took it off.
,
Has anyone heard of this ?
,
I put it back on hand tight & as I usually do took a couple shots out back . I missed target big time , I do have a scope on it.
First is there any other way to tell if the barrel nut is lose other than using a barrel nut tool ?
How much are they ?
,
I know I have read this before but what is the first step in getting a suppressor ?

I wish mine would just twist off, lol
I hope that when you were cleaning it that you were holding the barrel and FH and not the handguard/upper and FH. You are aware that you can twist the barrel in the upper that way?
If that is the case then back to springfield you go
When i started to get fliers with my 15-22 i got the barrel nut tool and tightened it up, it only took a little bit of movement, it was certainly not 'loose' but my accuracy and groups got a lot better after i tightened it up.
To be missing the target with a scope, seems odd, i hope you have not twisted the barrel in the upper.

If you have poor groupings, you may have a loose barrel nut. I do not know of any other way to test this; I made my first barrel nut tool from PVC. The nut was so tight, it broke the PVC fingers. Since they only cost about $20, I just ended up purchasing one online.
The first step in getting a suppressor in the US is doing your research and determining which can you want. The second is deciding whether you plan on submitting paperwork as an individual or as a trust. If you anticipate (or already have) a family, a trust is better because it allows you to amend who can possess said item(s). You can get a good online trust suitable for NFA items in 24 hours.
Next is locating FFLs near you that have a Class 3/7 SOT - that is, are authorized by the government to sell/manufacture NFA items. Find one that has the can you are interested in IN STOCK. If they don't have it in stock, go to another FFL. The ATF has to approve the transfer of an NFA item to that FFL, and that alone can take another 1-2 months!
Finally, once you have your trust in hand (or fingerprints and CLEO signoff [for NOW] in the case of individual submission), take it to your FFL, pay for your suppressor and $200 tax stamp, fill out (or have the FFL fill out) the Form 4, mail 2x copies of everything, and then wait.
And then wait some more.
And then wait some more.
And eventually, in about 3-5 months, you will get a call from your FFL saying that you can finally take possession of your suppressor.
I have a SiCo Stainless Steel Sparrow for my 15-22, and I love it. SiCo has treated me right - I've sent two cans (including the sparrow) back for issues, and the turnaround has been quick, and free of charge.
As far as trusts, I went with 199trust.com. Trusts from them are now $79, so there's really no justifiable reason NOT to have a trust.

First thing that came to my mind too. I would never have thought that a twist of cloth would turn anything.
So if I did turn the barrel how will I know & is it not symmetrical ?
I was just worried I had loosened it & would need to tighten it back ?

I doubt that you could really twist the barrel in the upper with your bare hands, by just stuffing a rag on the FH. Seeing as though you said you never attempted to take it off, it may have been just hand tight anyway.
If you have twisted the barrel, according to my understanding the ejector should be out of alignment and be able to wobble. You may have heard a crack as the plastic tabs broke?
The barrel nut can work loose, through overuse for the little price of the barrel nut tool i would get one and periodically tighten the nut. Thats what i do. Plus if you ever plan on replacing the handguard, then this tool is a must anyways.

I'm going to get it back out & look but it operated fine on the 4 shots I took so would seem the ejector was working.
I guess the next step is to get a bigger target & see just how far off it is & if it is consistent or flying all over the place.

Before i tightened mine it would place 2 shots close to one another and then one would fly off maybe 2 - 3 inches in a random direction, from the bench. It was never just all over the place but 3-4 out of every 10 shots would go way off the main group. Since tightening i can place 10 shots within 1cm of each other off the bench, consistently.
As far as i know...fliers/bad groups can be one of four things
1 - Barrel twisted in the upper...major warranty repair
2 - Damaged Crown.................major warranty repair
3 - Loose barrel nut.................$20 tool
4 - Loose nut behind the barrel........training , training, training.
Hope you get it sorted.

There is no hope for the lose nut behind it all.
,
So if the barrel turns the ejector has to turn also , right ?

Yeah, the ejector is attached to the barrel, so if you twist the barrel in the upper then the ejector will have shifted as well. Never happened hope it never does, but this is what i understand from reading others reports.

I'd say the threads need a suppressor, but that's just me...
