Default New 15-22 Jams Like a Mother

Finally got to take the 15-23 to the range this weekend and it was a most unpleasant trip. Shot over 150 rounds (split of Armscor high velocity hollow points and Federal AutoMatch 325 bulk) and had FTE literally every 1-3 rounds. I had casings jammed horizontally between the bolt and the receiver, stove piped, I even had casings jammed between the ejector and the receiver! I took my time loading the magazines to ensure the rounds were properly staggered. Talk about disappointing. I found two lonely boxes of CCI standard velocity rounds that I'm going to try tomorrow. If I get the same results, I guess it's back to S&W it goes

Same exact thing happened with mine. I ended up sending it back to S&W, they replaced the extractor, and now it's golden. Sure it was disappointing but I'm much happier now that it's working how it's supposed to.

Ouch!! I bought a new one also, put ~1000 rounds thru it so far without an issue. I would send it back to S&W. The Federal Automatch runs great thru mine.

I had the same problem: spent round crushed by the bolt, often a live round in the chamber.

Sent it back to S&W and they adjusted the ejector.

Did they replace the extractor (in the bolt) or the ejector (attached to the barrel)?

What was the total turnaround time?

They replaced the extractor, in the bolt. I called their CS dept, told them what was going on, and they e-mailed me a FedEx shipping label. Turnaround time is usually 2-3 weeks. For me, it was worth it just to get it was working properly. Good luck!

I had the same FTE problem on my 15-22 sport, 2-3 FTE on each 25rd mag I would run through it. The ejector was really loose and had back and forth and in and out play. I had Academy Sports send it back to S&W and got it back in 3 weeks. S&W replaced/repaired the ejector, and it has no play in it at all now. I shot 75rds through it yesterday with 1 FTE using Remington Thunderbolt & CCI Blazer. I am still wanting to put more rounds through it to see if I get any more FTE. I didn't like that I still had an FTE within my first 15rds I shot after getting it back.

2-3 FTE per mag would be awesome! Right now I'm getting a FTE. Every 2-3 rounds!!! Thanks for all the info guys, looks like I'll need to call S&W and send her back home for a tune up.

That reminds me of a brand new Series 80 Colt 45 Auto I bought about 10 years ago. . .couldn't get it to fire over 2 shots before jamming. I took it home and tore it apart. Found dried-up brown packing grease literally filling up the interior of the gun. After I cleaned it up, it shot great. The grease looked like it was from the 1930's, and I have no idea why it was put in my gun. I haven't bought a Colt since, and don't plan on ever buying one again.

I have put well over 5000 rounds through my 15-22 and have had one failure to eject. Its been an outstanding weapon. I would agree with everyone else that it needs a return trip to S&W and a tune-up.

DocB, wont buy a Colt just because of some dried up grease? Wow, EVERY firearm I have EVER acquired gets at least a "field strip" clean & lube before I fire it, your expernice is a good example why! But whateva, regards Ernie

Fyi I put in a 3lb timney trigger and the ftf, fte issues poped up.
I put in a lighter firepin spring and 99% of the issues went away.
This is shooting m22, AE, fed 525 and dynapoint.

It was about 2 weeks.

Call them, don't email. They'll send the FedEx return label to you via email or snail mail (typically your choice). Print and ship.

I received no extras when it was returned, so don't expect them. They actually stole the flag safety, which was in place when I boxed it up.

I've only run about 100 rounds through it since getting it back. 1 FTF in those 100, probably magazine related (Salem6 mag).

....or do some research on here and fix it yourself. You'll find out that its just a little bit of tweaking the ejector and you'll be good. You wont be down 2-3 weeks without your rifle. That's what quite a few on here did.

I agree with "noscivic", plus like I stated earlier, strip&clean, its all about learning and maintaining your firearm, I know to some it sounds like a pain, but its all part of it, and a enjoyment to me, regards Ernie

I ran 100 rounds of CCI standard velocity through it at lunch. She went 100/100. Apparently, my rifle loves that stuff. So now I'm off to find as much of it as I can. To others, this isn't my first rifle or AR based platform. I've had an AR for the last 14 years, so I'm familiar with the maintenance. Thanks again all!

CCI standard velocity is my favorite 22 ammo. It works in all my 22s. Having said that though, my two 15-22s will eat anything (except maybe Rem. Thunderbolts - I quit buying those years ago.) Even Golden Bullets feed and eject properly 99 times out of 100. With rimfire rifles, though, just about every example seems to be a little different and operate best with a particular ammo.

I concur.

Yup, we gotta learn how to do it sometime. It will get "outta tweak" again.

5 years from now when it does it again, S&W ain't gonna send a label.

You can learn how to do the tweaking now or pay big bucks later.

(or find a good, local gunsmith who works cheap....)

FYI---my M&P 22 MOE would ocassionialy do the same thing, but usually with Remington Golden bullets. It is frustrating when that happens. I tried some different brands of ammo and CCI seemed to perform the best. I hate being limited to one brand of ammo so I broke down and bought an after market extractor, Volquartsen, and my rifle has performed almost flawlessly since. I still have trouble with the Remington, but the new extractor has made a huge difference. I decided that I really didn't want to sent mine in for service and it has worked out for me.

I was having this problem. Armscor ammo as well.

Ended up blowing out the extractor with an OOB because it pinched a casing enough to fire the next round.

Ordered the 16$ Volquartsen Exact Edge extractor. Have been to the range 3 times and 1500 rounds later, not a single misfire or FTE.

My first 15-22 suffered the exact same issue as the OP. I was just about to send it back to the UK distributor when the rifle mysteriously seemed to fix itself.

Not so long ago I bought another 6 mags, and the problem reappeared briefly with the new mags. After filling and firing each of the mags a few times, the problem disappeared again.

I'm left wondering if it is partly a new magazine problem? After all, an issue with a new gun will probably involve a new mag as well?

Some folks in this thread and others have spoken in nasty terms about Armscor ammo. Realizing that I have accumulated about 1500 rounds of their 36g high velocity hollow point, I went to shoot it yesterday. About 220 rounds without a single failure. I also have shot CCI mini-mags (36g HP as well) with maybe an FTE in one of 100. It also likes the Federal AutoMatch (325 bulk). This rifle has +- 2,500 rounds through it since I bought just after January 1st. I guess I am lucky. I just bought some more Armscor at .07 per round.

Bought one of these two days ago. It jammed (stovepipes with one in the chamber) about every 8 rounds on average. I read a few threads here and tweaked the extractor so it just barely cleared the bolt. 100 rounds later I proclaim it cured. Thanks to those that posted this fix.

I bought my 15/22 the end of february. The first 325 rounds I put through it was Federal Automatch and had no problem. Next range trip, started with a clean gun and the same ammo. The farther into the box of federal automatch the more FTE I was having. It got to the point where almost every other round was jambing or FTEing, very frustrating! After some searching on here, I bent the ejector just a tiny bit, but at the same time I also installed the Volquartsen ejector. The next day I went to the range and put 150 rounds of standard CCI, 100 rounds of CCI mini mags, and 325 rounds of Federal Automatch through it with out a single issue. I've since put about 600 rounds though it without any issues.

So, for clarification: the Volquartsen ejector to the Ruger 10/22 works on the M&P 15-22?

I'm having the same issues and not sure if it's my ammo, my ejector or what....does this look normal ? Should the ejector pin be tight to the bolt like it is? Or should there be a small gap between the 2 ?

Chatting with my FFL about it... He had another brand new one in his shop and said it looks like this...a little gap inbetween the pin & bolt

On a 15-22 it's very easy to bend the ejector using a cleaning rod & all kinds of issues will surface from a bent ejector I believe there is a YouTube Video on straightening it,I only use a Patch Worm Kit when cleaning My 15-22 for that reason

Contacting the bolts' center rib (as pictured) seems to be where the ejector should be.

And "high" enough to almost touch the recess.

Is anyone else able to look and see if they have the gap or if their ejector pin is tight on the bolt ?

I have a very small gap on both of mine. They both function well.

Mine looks exactly like this. Only had mine a short time. Put 500 rounds of cci mini mag through it with 4 empty cases getting crushed in the returning bolt. I have just pushed the ejector up a small bit towards the bolt more but there wasn't a big gap to start with anyway. I haven't fired it since so can't say if it has made a difference.

Got my new one back from S&W today and went to range to re-zero my red dot. Put 200 rnds through it, 4 different ammos, zero malfunctions.
Paper work that came back with the rifle indicated the ejector was "repaired". Not replaced. How do you "repair" an ejector?
I'm sure they just tweaked it.
As long as it works. Tomorrow I'll put the VQ extractor in and back to range.
