Scarcity of 22 LR ammo
What gives with this 22LR shortage? Every store I go to never has any and even online they are out of stock all the time. This stuff used to be plentiful and easy to find and now it is easier to find gold than good 22LR. Sure is frustrating to have a new rifle and can't find any ammo to even shoot. Does anyone know of a GOOD source of online ammo that I can purchase? I have been to so many and all have nothing in stock and won't have any available indefinitely. Please let me know, or perhaps I should just go with a .223/5.56 AR and move on.

ah, 22LR ammo has been pretty scarce since 2012, something about the elections and Sandy Hook.

You probably haven't needed any .22 LR for the past 4+ years .
In the past 2-3 months (local to me), I have seen .22 LR on a store shelf for the first time since about 2012! The bigger sporting goods and gun-specific retailers seem to have some regularly, but be prepared for sticker shock if you recall 3-4 cents/round pricing. Good luck in your search.

I know I already got flamed a little for saying hoarders on another thread, but come on, there is no need to have 10000 rds. of 22 caliber LR in your basement.
It is ridiculous that when a store finally gets a shipment, in one day, it is all gone! I can see storing 1000 rd, but more than that...be real. If you are a survivalist, I would be getting much higher calibers to store in case of Doomsday. A ton of 22 LR isn't going to stop a ton of people from taking your sanctuary!

I have 10,000 rounds of .22lr. Notice that I am not the one crying about a shortage. Why do I keep so many rounds on hand? So I can shoot when I want. So my son can shoot when he wants. So our Boy Scout troop can shoot when they want.
I was going to offer you some help, but with your attitude, nevermind... figure it out on your own.

All you have to do is sign up for the email notifications on the Official (in stock 22) lr ammo thread right here in the forum you just posted on and you can buy all the ammo you want. I'm not sure where you are looking online but there is plenty out there. There are posts on that thread EVERYDAY with links to places you can buy some.

I've had good luck with Brownells but you have to be patient. They have been having some good sales lately. If you join their "Edge" program for around $50 a year you get free shipping.
I am lucky in that my lgs keeps a good stock on hand most of the time.

22lr is easier to find now than any point in the last 4 years. If you think 1,000 is the limit people should have on hand you must not shoot much. I think I had about 3,000 before 2012 and still have about the same amount even after shooting 200+ rounds per month over the last couple years.

As a Bullseye shooter I use to buy .22 LR ammo by the case ( 5000 rds. ) It's Not unusual for Bullseye shooters to have a case, or two or four, of their target gun favorite .22 ammo.
I haven't shot Bullseye for several years because the price and availability of quality .22 target ammo.
I've seen it look like a feeding frenzy when they put .22 ammo on the shelfs at the LGS. When knotheads quit buying all the .22 ammo they can find,, and paying $50 to $75 a brick.. You'll probably see it back on the shelves.

22 LR is no big deal anymore, compared to the hard days. What has now moved into the "Impossible" to find category is 22 WMR. I haven't seen a box of that for retail in well over a year. What gives, I have no clue.

Limited runs I assume. I had the same difficulty tracking down some .22 shorts awhile back.

I saw 22WMR yesterday at a local WM, but a box of 50 CCI is up from $10 to almost $14 since the first of the year. I passed on it at that price, so there may still be some on the shelf, but I doubt it, as there is a gun show this weekend, and the usual suspects are buying everything at WM to resell.

Being a 'prepper' is one thing, but a hoarder, like you, are causing the shortage of 22LR ammo. Nobody needs 100000 rds. Bet you don't shoot 1000 a week. Anyway, many out there are like me that think your type is making the shortage of this ammo worse for all! As a military and NRA member, you should have more concern for all shooters, not just yourself. Have a good day!

22 LR is everywhere around me, except Wally World, it's the 22 WMR that I'm having trouble finding. Most 22 LR is $.07-.09 each, which is probably the new norm. WMR ammo is closer to $.30 a round, but I did find a box or 200 recently for about $.22. I hope to eventually have 10,000 rounds of everything.
I am not a hoarder, I'm a shooter.
PS: Ky Gun has (had yesterday) a whole pallet of bricks of Armscor 22 LR, for about $45 per brick. They had Federal Automatch for about $.07 last week in boxes of 325 count I think. Limit 5.

All is not lost. You have some options:
1- Get a job at Walmart. Their employees seem to buy the ammo right off the skid.
2 – Apologize to Cyphertext and hope he takes pity on you.
3 – Send me a PM. I have 47,005 rounds of rimfire and am happy to share. Figure…3 times what I paid, plus shipping. I have to charge that, so I don’t find my future self typing inflammatory posts on a forum of people, with whom I presumably share a passion, where I tell them what idiots they are for being smarter, or perhaps just luckier, than I am.
Full disclosure: I was lucky. I decided literally months before Sandy that I should stock up on various ammo, as my family was getting very interested in shooting and my wife more nervous about the political climate. CCI was rumored to be increasing their prices, so I bought by the case. I wish I could invest in stocks with such savvy. My friends and fellow shooters know they can go shooting anytime. The same friends and fellow shooters who would help protect my sanctuary, as you put it.

It is none of your business how much ammo I have or how much I shoot. Last time I looked, I live in a free country.
BTW, there is no shortage of 22lr, when compared to the last few years. Heck I just checked Midway & you can buy a case (5000 rounds) of Norma Tac-22, which is my favorite ammo to shoot. That is just looking one place for one specific brand, much less the ammo thread here on this site. So quit crying and quit passing judgement on folks you don't know. Buy some damn ammo & start shooting!

Compared to a few years ago there is a ton of 22LR out there - it depends on your price point!
Have you used the various search engines for looking for it?
Try gunbot.com or ammoseek as a couple.
If you want a tough one to shoot - try 22MRF - its almost scarce.

How true...a good steel toed boot is good for short distances as is a lead pipe. Funny how they accuse me of a bad attitude and slam me when they say the same things. Two way street and all. A good mirror will be sent to them. Enjoy!

No one here has claimed to be holding 100,000 rounds. I don't think 10,000 is unreasonable. It is not that hard to find today.

I have 10K .22lr on hand. Used to have double that. I haven't bought a single rd from a store in 10 years. I bought 4 Wallyboxes at a yard sale for $100 a year a go on impulse. I shoot 300 rds, 3X a year along with 150-200 rds centerfire every trip to keep from being too dangerous should I need to employ my carry weapon. Whether it's economics, politics, greed, schadenfreude, or stupidity in general, if'n I see .22lr at a decent price I'm getting it even though I really don't need it. I don't care what others think or do. Joe

You know, there's a few politicians out there who completely agree with that sentiment, and would like to expand it to a lot of other things besides just ammunition.

Beginning about December last year I've seen 22lr and 22WMR on the shelf in every store I have visited.
Academy Sports has 1400 rd Golden Bullet buckets for $79
Walmart has had 1000 packs of M-22
Bass Pro Shop and Gander Mountain have good supplies of several brands.
I laugh at the 22lr sellers on texasguntrader offering the ammo they just bought in the stores listed above for double and triple their outlay.
At a recent gun show I attended a seller had $45 Bass Pro/Gander Mtn 22WMR CCI Landry Swamp People box of 200 for $85 and $6.95 Rem Yellow Jacket for $15.
This hurts us all.Don't buy from the thieves.

A local gun shop has a sale on S&W 22 rifles....if you buy a new S&W 22 rifle, S&W will throw in a 222 round box of 22 LR ammo " for free" .
After that , I guess you are on your own to get ammo for it.
Times are bad when the only way to sell a 22 is throw in some ammo for it, and hope the buyer isn't aware of the shortage.

I'm not only a NRA member, but a NRA certified rifle, pistol, and shotgun coach, as well as RSO. Did you miss the part where I supply ammo to my son's troop? On a shooting weekend, we have over 100 boys who get to shoot 50 rounds... you do the math. I assure you that I have done more for the future of shooting sports than you.
With your "Nobody needs X number of rounds" attitude, you sound like an anti gun person... what is your next step, telling me what gun I need?

22lr is available again, I've been able to pick up a nice little stash online just over the past couple of months. Like others have mentioned, use the search engine notifications. I signed up for whatever is linked at slickguns, and specified my pricepoint (I think it's set for 8 cents or under). Whenever something pops up, it flashes to my phone, and you usually have less than a half hour to decide if you want that deal. I've gotten CCI, Winchester, the bucket from Remington, Federal, Aguila, and Norma that way. I also have talked to the owner of my local range, and he's sold me Winchester (1000 rd in black box stuff, not the walmart boxes) for reasonable.
Once I got enough for comfort, I've laid off until it's around 6 cents shipped, but that still comes around.
I think we've seen an explosion of 10-22/MP 22/GSG 522 etc "tactical" shooters, people who buy and shoot a brick at a time plinking. That, and the recent shortages of centerfire rds (well, I'll just go shoot 22 instead), I think accounts for the 22lr shortages.

I often wonder about these topics as it's readily available in my area. I leave it on the shelves unless it's $0.06 per round or similar. Most local stores have at least some brand in for around $0.10 per round. The cheap stuff tends to be Remington. Branching out to try different brands, I ordered 4 boxes of Federal Match from PSA and had it at my door in less than a week. I just bought 2 boxes of Winchester locally. Checking back online, just hitting a few sites, all have them had some in stock.
PSA - Federal in stock and less than $0.08 per round
Federal 22 Long Rifle 40gr Solid Champion AutoMatch Ammunition 325rds - AM22
AIM Surplus - Many different brands in stock
.22 LR
Wholesale Ammunition - Several brands in stock
Ammunition - Featured Items - Military Shooters LLC
If you don't want to search several sites, use AmmoSeek like someone mentioned. There's also slick guns:
https://www.slickguns.com/category/ammo?caliber=3
By the way, I have over 13,000 rounds currently. Sounds like a lot, but 3 of us went through more than 600 rounds Sunday. So with that rate, we have about 20 range sessions. Any friends come over and that rate doubles, so 10 range sessions. Not excessive by any stretch.

Like I said sign up for the in stock ammo thread here and you will get emails everyday with links to buying ammo. More then you will really need. I have more then enough just using the links posted here and between my wife and myself we shoot around 700 to 800 rounds per week. Going to the big box stores is just a waste of time and gas.

I have plenty; it was only a couple of months ago that I acquired at least 500 CCIs and I have other stuff. I dumped my Thunderer .22s because they were too dirty in my pistol. My pistol doesn't like Federal, either, so I have 500+ of those I am going to sell. I'll make a note in the Classifieds over the weekend.

If you have an Academy Sports near you, check there. I have bought 800 rounds of Browning hollow point, 1400 fps, for $ 10 a box of 100. I need the high velocity for my .22lr pistols.

In 2012 at the height of the shortage, I supplied two Hunter Safety classes and two NRA basic pistol classes with all the .22LR they needed free of charge. In the last two years I have sold to people less prepared than myself about 7,000 rds of .22LR at my cost so they could compete in club level matches. If that excess 15,000 rounds makes me a hoarder, then I'm proud to wear the title.
Oh, I haven't purchased a single round of .22LR since the summer of 2008. Hold your finger in the wind and buy it cheap and stack it deep. It's not going to get any cheaper or easier to find regardless of who wins in November.

I have trouble believing .22's are the same price in London as here. 100 packs of CCI "quiet" rds were $11 @ today's show. 500 rd bricks of Aguila were $55, still $.11/rd. Today's bargain; 10 box case of "325 rd federal target" were $299, just a shade under $.10/ rd. I guess $100 5K rd cases are gone forever.

I have 8,000 rounds of 22's and am not a hoarder by any standard. On a normal day with the kids 500 rounds are easily shot.
I have found that people who complain about a shortage look every couple of weeks, don't find any and then say there is a shortage. If you want 22lr. get your butt up early, go online and order as much as you want.

Does anyone know of a GOOD source of online ammo that I can purchase? I have been to so many and all have nothing in stock and won't have any available indefinitely. Please let me know, or perhaps I should just go with a .223/5.56 AR and move on.

My local shop has CCI, Rem, Aquila, Fed and Winch. in stock and has for months. The local Walmart hasn't had any to be seen for years.

If you can't find ammo, you're not trying. I was unlucky enough to get a 22lr pistol right when the shortage hit. By using nothing more than this site and the 22lr ammo availability link, I was able to accumulate all I needed. At first I would buy anything. Soon, however, I was able to accumulate enough of my preferred ammo (copper plated round nose) that I sold off my lead round nose stuff to a friend. Now I'm able to sit back until mini mags (my much preferred round) come in around or under 10 cents per round. Sure, it's not the price I'd like, but it's there. And now I've accumulated more than I "need" which I'm very pleased with.
BTW, I have several dozen golf balls on a shelf in my basement. I also keep a lot of bottled water in my garage. I have some gas and diesel stored as well. I keep some money in the bank too. Food? Yep, some of that too. I'm blessed to have more than I need. I try to make sure I don't forget to be thankful but also to be diligent. It works for me.

I have over 10,000 rds easily. Only buy local, never on the internet and rarely pay much over 7-8 cents a round for mini mags, less for everything else. Iand my daughter shoot over 1000 rds a month, sometimes 2 or more. Some matches have really high round counts, and I use several different types for different guns so 10K spread out over six different competition guns as well as plinking guns ain't all that much. Wish I had 25K.

If the shortage is easing up then I will say I was glad I could help.
I only shoot my 15-22 when my grandson & I can get away , not as often as I would like. I do still look when I am buying 380 ammo my preferred carry these days & even that is getting a little easier to find & call it hoarding or not when I see it at the price I like I buy it.
As for 22lr the last I bought was mini mags for $12.97 100 box.
One person I know at WM says they do get it in but it goes out fast.
If all goes well the whole country will be rich again soon & 0.13 a round will not be a problem.
,
One thing I did wonder about is why we never see imported 22lr ?
