Default Recommended Brands of 22LR ammo

As a new owner of this rifle and reading tons of online information about what brand of ammo to use, I am totally confused as what to get. I have also read the manual that came with my rifle stating which brands to use and NOT to use. I know about the CCI mini mags, Stingers, and Standard and HV ammo. But this brand is almost impossible to find.

Since many of you have used different ammo brand in your MP 15-22, what brands have you found best. I have the standard 25 rd. S&W magazines, a couple 35 rd. Plinker Tacticals, and also a 50 rd Black Dog drum. Any help would be appreciated along with a link of places that carry ammo that is in stock.

Thank you!

KH

CCI, Aguila (except Colibri or Super Colibri), Federal Champion 525, Fiocchi, Remington Golden Bullets, Blazer, Norma, anything CCI (except quiet), and Winchester M22 all work pretty well for me. I avoid all other Winchester and Remington packs along with American Eagle. I have not used any of the higher end brands such as Eley and RWS.

I also avoid CCI Stinger and Velocitor because of the number of instances of blown out extractors that I've read about using those. That would probably also apply to the ultra high velocity rounds by Aguila Supermaximum at 1700fps.

Rimfires are funny in that different rifles perform best with different ammo even if they are seemingly identical, so try everything you can find (buy small quantities at first) to see what works best for yours.

Best way to find in stock ammo is http://www.wikiarms.com/

Do you use the CCI High Velocity (1235 fps)? Any issues there? I'm learning that you need to read all the specs very carefully, as CCI appears to make a gazillion variations of .22lr!

Thanks!

Winchester M22 and Federal Auto Match seem to run fine in every 22 semi I've tried them in.

Try 5.56
Anyone who has shot enough 22s knows every rifle is different.
Might be the same model but its likely they may not group the same with the same ammo.
Anyone who says different, isnt being upfront with you!
Sounds like you have some reading to do.

Buy as many brands as you can. See what works!

These days just about ANY 22 ammo you can find is your best brand. If you found a good supply of CCI, I would go back and get more. If it happens your particular weapon does not like it, it will certainly make good trading stock both now and anytime in the future.

CCI Stinger has a longer case, so does not chamber properly in some guns. An example is the Ruger 10/22. Works fine in the standard editions, but on the factory "DON'T USE" list if you have a target barrel. It is also heavy enough a load that it will beat the springs up sooner. I keep what little stinger I have for picking off varmits with my 10/22.

And both Stinger and Velocitor are too expensive for plinking.

I'll buy CCI Mini Mag wherever I see it at less than $8 a box of 100. Everything else I have to stop and think about a minute.

The Blazer (CCI) mentioned above is a good (maybe "better") round. About the same speed as the Mini Mag, but lead round nose, not plated, so a bit more cleanup involved. Shot 250 Blazers last range trip without a single failure.

Up jere is Canada we have lots of 22 ammo.
Issue is its 10-15 cents a round.
SK mag ammo bulk is $57.99 + tax.
Cci is around 12-14 cents
AE is 9 cents
M22 is the cheapest other than fed 525 @ $78 and $32 + tax
Canadian tire has tons of Aguila @ $8-$12 a box of 50

I haven't used that, but 1235fps should be fine, and CCI is golden as far as quality.

In my experience 22s are highly individualistic when it comes to what they like to eat and what they don't. Buy a box or two of each brand that you can get, try it and see what works. If you have more than one 22 finding something that works for all of them reasonably well can be an ordeal. I actually keep a cheat sheet on a 4X5 card in my pistol rack that says what guns like what ammo just to keep it straight.

Nope the OP should try some 5.56 or maybe 7.65x39.
Asking a question like he did means more reading and learning is needed!
Be upfront/honest guys. Tell him the truth.
Again OP buy boxes of 50/100 of everything that is instock. Test for yourself! Learn learn learn. No one can do this for you!

I traded my semi-auto .22LR rifle for the bolt action Ruger American Rimfire because I got tired of dealing with failed action. The .22 revolvers are looking like a good replacement for my bottom feeder for the same reason. Rumor has it that the $400 Kadett Kit II for my CZ75 eats all .22LR ammo. Find myself shooting more expensive calibers just because I'm tired of prying ammo out of actions.

Wow seems to me if your having to pry brass, something is wrong either with the rifle or the operator.
Could be a cleaning issue or a simple adjustment needed.
Switching to centerfire is a copout for not knowing what the heck youre doing!
